I'm 74. I lost my son 46 years. I talk to him everyday and think about him all through the day, everyday. As interesting as the content of this video is, my favorite part has nothing to do with the trucks. It's the interaction between father and son. The pride and the love the two of you have for each other is unmistakable. Y'all are very lucky.

That’s an awesome rig. My late Daddy had a yeller one similar to that back in the early 80’s. Loved joining him on hauls just to shoot the shit and bond. Loved climbing into it and learned how to disembark super fast using the vertical handle closest the door missing every step like a professional. Sleeper was awesome. I got to drive it often and was only a teenager. Rethwisch don’t have the horns on top of the cab, but ours did. I remember the horn front covers were sharper than razor blades around the outer edge as I had split my pinky open while on the top washing around them. What a memory yanker. Thank you for showing it.

DANG...I drove a new Freightshaker cabover just like that one but with a CAT 3406B [425 HP], 13 speed back in the day - put over 700,000 miles on it without a scratch before overhaul. Lots of good memories, especially being able to hang out in the Monfort lane shaking the trees while others raked the leaves. And Bill is right about drivers back then - we always looked out for each other. Glad you're taking good care of that 'gem' Bill...tis a gleam machine! And Fred's cabover...I remember Schneider trucking had a ton of those 'pumpkin patch' International cabovers - I passed a lot of them...gave them a wide berth too! Fred...you got a 'gem' too! Thanks for the great video - keep them rolling!

Mr. Rethwisch, you should bring one of those cabovers to the St. Ignace Michigan truck show Sept 19th. It’s the 25th anniversary and it’s going to be a lot of fun! Nice video. 👍

I have watched this video several times. Those Old School Cabovers never gets Old. I drove from the early 80's to the late 90's And yes your right. It was a different world back then. But with kids like Fred and Luke And all the kid's ( boys and girls) that are Involved in the trucking business I think it will be ok. Thanks for the video . Fred that is an awesome International. The pride you made that Tow truck driver fill. He's probably still telling the story about the time he towed an old Cab over that a 7 yr old owned. I know I would be. Y'all are such an inspiration..

I grew up in a truck. Times were a lot different once upon a time. ELDs have made it almost impossible to stop and help someone but then again most people don't care. Our trucks might be nicer but we lost something in ourselves along the way. I hope that we find it again. Trucking was an us thing, today we just a me mentality..

Two or more cabovers close to each other is a very rare site in the USA nowadays. I remember those things were everywhere back in the 1980s & down. Nowadays the only cabovers you see often are fire trucks, garbage trucks, yard spotters, crane trucks, concrete pumper trucks, front discharge cement trucks, & smaller size non semi trucks.

I totally agree with the thought of surrounding yourself with good people and good equipment! I had to surrender my CDL due to health issues, which broke my not only because I love trucking, but also cause the small fleet I drove for treated me great. I was Not a fan of what trucks they ran, but they really stayed on top of maintenance. And it was nothing for one of the owners to but 100 dollars in my hand every so often to cover scales or to get the truck washed. He even let me put extra marker lights on it!👍🏽

I usta ride with my father back in the 80s when I was a kid and that's all I wanted to do was drive truck as soon as I could. Never did transpire but the one main difference that contributed to lack of interest is nearly every single one of the romantic elements freedom and outlaw vibe that were once a huge part of Truckin are now gone. It was a job that paid well n didn't have a boss looking over your shoulder at work all day people looked out for one another good stick to your ribs 24hr home cooking diner at truck stops. Now every single secend of you day is under surveillance good food is a Denny's. Truckers were a certain breed an underground outlaw club with their own language that folks knew better than to mess with and that bread a real tight comradery. Today it is much more like a job same as otger

Yeah buy new if you want def and sensors! People say well I got a warranty but sometimes the warranty ain’t worth the paper it’s written on ! And I say buy pre emission with overhaul paperwork from a legit place but you got to remember not to haul cheap freight and there’s more to a truck than just the motor! I bet you that cabover is more dependable than a new truck! I know I have a couple old trucks and new ones!
