Its time to see some great looking Cab Overs that was brought to the 75 Chrome Shop show. This episode has a little bit of everything. From movie references, to some great story telling from a couple old school truckers, and possibly even the most rare item yet, a 13 SPEED Transmission! Take a trip down memory lane with us and comment on your favorite cabover that you see.
Don't forget we have our truck show coming up on June 18-19, 2021

My great uncle drove a Peterbilt 362 on a Florida to New York and back route for years. Bill Underwood, I never got to meet him since he passed from cancer in the late 80's or early 90's. Got plenty of picture of him with his rig though. They say nobody had ever seen so many rigs in one spot when truckers came from all over to see him in the hospital. I'm not a trucker myself, but I have a great admiration for them, and always loved these big rigs. Y'all be safe out there

My dad hauled pipes out of harbor in Long Beach, Ca. in the early to mid 80's in a 69 K100 that was stretched out to the max. It was yellow. It had an 318 Detroit with short stacks. It was great to hear that thing roar going up the Grapevine! It's had a 16 speed Spicer. I miss riding in that rig. I wish he would've kept it because it would be mine today. It would be my dream cab over. My dream conventional would be an old stretched out 359.

Back in 1976 when the length limit increased from 65ft to 75ft here in the USA, cabovers were still common up through the late-1990s & that's when most of them phased out & more conventional cabs took their places.

I drove cabovers from 1970 until the early 90's covering just about every state. The only conventional I had driven was a B-61 Mack and a 2010 International in that time period so I really never drove anything to compare with a couple of cabovers I had.The KW and the Pete were both hard to beat. Super Nice trucks.

Once you're in it you're in it? LOL As far as I'm concerned, the two most exciting days for a cab over driver is the day you get in it and the day you get out of it. My first ride and cabover was a 78 GMC Astro. I remember my early days of trucking I had to take the change out of my pocket and stick it in the cup holder and then I had to climb in the back to take my trousers off. Anyone who's been in a cabover long enough knows how they beat you to death. Once I got into a nice riding conventional there was no going back!

THANKS Guys - enjoyed the cab overs. I started OTR in the early 70's in a Freightshaker cab over with a 250 natural aspirated Cummins - talk about painfulness in that headwind on I-80 in the mid-west. Back then, cab overs were the majority - saw a lot of them 80 style Pete's. The only fleet of conventional's when I started OTR was Monfort out of Greeley, Colorado and they were running K wabler 425 kitty cats - they'd blow by me like I was going in reverse. Great video!

Greetings from the Ohio Porters.🇺🇸 This was some good stuff! We love cabovers! I travel around with my two boys and we love it when we catch a cabover out on the road! 🥰 You found some sweet looking rides! 🤩 I come from a trucking family...my dad started driving in the 1930s. We own 3 cabovers so far...CL9000, IH 9670 Walmart truck, GMC Crackerbox. Cabovers sure had plenty of style and character and really stand out when you see them on the highway! 😎 Special cabovers have a Cat under them! 🥰 Cabovers Rule! Maybe there will be plenty of the, at the Fairborn truck show this year...2021! 😎

Cabover trucks, also known as COE (cab over engine) are not a style you see too frequently these days. This flat-nosed design was very popular “in it’s day, because of the regulations for length”. The regulations used to be a maximum length of 65 feet, including truck and trailer. This lasted from “1956 to 1976. In 1976, another 10 feet of length was allowed, for a maximum 75-foot allowance”, according to Smart-Trucking. As length regulations have increased, the amount of cabovers has decreased. Now that longer units are allowed on the roads, the main advantage of these trucks, is no longer valid. Overtime, “the large carriers that purchased cabovers, switched over to the conventional style rig, and the bottom rapidly fell out of the market for them in North America”. This led to the eventual halt of all COE manufacturing in North America.
