If it wasn't for you and Lisa Mason Ziegler I would have never have thought to plant out my snapdragons in mid-April (zone 6b). My Chantilly and Twinny are blooming beautifully. My Potomac and Rocket are on sturdy stems and just starting to bud up. Moving onto the next progression...planting them before my first frost. All the information you share is a total "Game Changer" for my garden and I thank you!!

I'm pretty sure that is Fancy'Smokey Eyes'. I learned a lesson with my autumn sown 'Dara' this Spring, I didn't think it had survived, the foliage looked depleted and dead. I pulled a couple of the plants, but decided to just wait and see if the others may have survived...sure enough, they did. I'll definitely be sowing more this Fall! Those snapdragons of yours are gorgeous! Thank you for the tour!

Nichole, I live in western part of ky. Summers get almost as hot as Texas, but we are more humid and have damp cold winters compared to Tx., (I lived there in Central Texas 30 plus yrs). Im telling you this for a reference. What I do with Larkspur, poppys, bachelor buttons and zinnias. as soon as the seed head turns brown and dry, I will sprinkle the seeds directly after deadheading right away to the area of my choosing. I let our rain do its job and every spring I have a strong show. I just walk around like fairy god mother with her hand sprinkling them here and there. its kinda fun to see how the combinations work

This video is super helpful because cool flowers is a new concept to me but makes so much since. I struggle with knowing what time of year to plant seeds to get them to bloom before the growing season is over. Have you ever thought of making a small guide book for us newby's to tell us when we need to start seeds indoors and direct seed? I know you have made videos about it but it would be cool to see it in calendar form.

Your garden is so lush, the new garden at Hummingbird way looks as tho it's been there for yrs. I do plan on fall sowing this yr. I extended a bed last fall, could kick myself for not fall sowing. As they say...live and learn. My ambition was to not buy one plant to fill it, so far that has happened. Now I need the patience to wait for it all to bloom.

Wow! What a gorgeous cutting garden! I love it! I have mostly zinnias and different varieties of rudbeckia planted as my sunny spots are limited. ( I have a lot of shade) I just love snap dragons. That Bridal pink is gorgeous! Love your videos😃They really make my day! I live in zone 5 central Illinois. It’s already beastly hot here. 100 degrees yesterday!

This is so helpful! It's fun to see what's blooming for you now as I am one zone cooler than you and can look forward to what's going to be blooming for me in just a few more weeks! I am trying to grow orlaya for the first time and have failed utterly but I will try a fall sowing this year and see if I can get more success. It's so much fun to experiment. Your ranunculus look great! Are they in full sun? Mine are, and even thought I'm in 5b , they are already going dormant and I've had trouble with stems collapsing, too. We had a run of hot weather (80's) over the last couple of weeks and I ended up putting shade cloth over them, which helped a lot. They are in a raised bed, like yours, because I was concerned about them being in really well drained soil, but I think next year I will try them right in the ground. Thanks for sharing all your great experience and discoveries!

Wow Danielle, it looks wonderful. Thank you for sharing this. I live in England and our climate is very similar to yours so it's very helpful to see. Some of my plants are still tiny! I have one foxglove I sowed in August and it's flowering at about 40cm tall and then my other 5 about about 10cm! Do you know the reason for this stunted growth? Same for a few others of my hardy annuals. Yours are looking fab! Xx

Such an awesome video! Love it. Orlaya just stole my heart. When you direct sow the seeds, do you mulch over them? All may beds have quite a thick layer of mulch which I am beginning to dislike now as it makes self seeding as well as direct sowing more difficult I think. Everything looks FABULOUS! Just wondering how often you fertilize any of these cool weather flowers. I tried ranunculus for the first time, which seemed to grow well, but I got very few blooms. Any advice on snapdragons curving? Mine look as it they grew horizontally along the ground and then curved upright. Some are quite squiggly!!

5b, Somethings been eating my seedings, can’t figure out if it’s rolliepollies, cutworms or rabbits. Sprayed neem oil, didn’t help. I had a ton of Larkspur seedlings in spring but only 2 are left & only about 2 inches tall, Some left w only stems. Last year I had only 1 plant make it. Fall sown plants don’t make it here without protection, and they won’t germinate in the heat of our falls. 😞

Same here west Michigan 5b- planted 30 sunflower seedlings within fenced area and have 10 left- stems cut right in half and top left lying in the dirt….sprayed with rabbit repel still happened- researched and looked like cutworms (who even knew these existed…?!)- ran out and bought a big pack of Solo cups, cut down and placed a ring around every plant AND dusted with diatomaceous earth and Still had a couple more sunflower seedlings cut and some cosmos and my red torch sunflower seedlings- 😡 after nurturing those seeds, hardening off and carefully planting just to be cut in two overnight…..IF anyone knows what this culprit is do tell- I’m so sad- and mad- going to try to direct sow my missing flowers at this point.

I’m going to try grow them in big pots next year, I’d like to not resort to Sevin but if I the pot method doesn’t work I just might have to spray in that small area. Neem oil & D powder did not work.

Hi, I have been following you about the cool flowers, and read Lisas book. About to get my seeds under way here in the Southern Hemisphere to plant out in autumn (fall). My question is.... Do I grow seed in seed mix, then transfer to potting mix cells once they have a few leaves on. Or can I start off in potting mix and just leave them to grow undisturbed until I plant out in the garden? Thanks.

I had only 2 of 12 of my direct down seeds germinate. 9b norcal planted 6 weeks before last frost. i had about 15 of 144 seedlings germinate. i wonder if i should have been overhead watering instead of using drip.

So I have bought some honey wort and some straw flower and I bought the book that you suggested on cool flowers and the package of seeds does not show them as frost tolerate and says plant after a frost but everywhere else I see says to plant as a cool hardy annual so I’m a little confused
