I mean, there's a big difference between 1978 and 1985, 1988 and 1995, even 1998 and 2005... but more recent years just seem to be less and less different and unique to me.

well when it comes to pop music 2008 - 2013 is pretty unique in terms of sounds due to katy perry/kesha/gaga and many others artists/producers impact. Max martin kinda helped shape that sound. I think this style is called "bubble gum pop". For example teenage dream by katy perry influenced songs like "call me maybe" by carly rae jepsen

@@deivibeats3903 I’m pretty sure the name bubblegum pop was coined in the 60s/70s. The structure is upbeat Melodies with simple lyrics that are easy to sing and dance to. Targeted to young teens.

@@dukesanddaggers true, but bubblegum pop made a resurgence in the late 2000s to mid 2010s. Actually, Taylor Swift's sound on 1989 was considered innovative at the time despite the fact that 80s inspired pop is the norm now

Late 00s - early 10s pop heavily uses chip tunes (the video gamey sound as the lead and percussion to some extent). The pop landscape changed when Britney Spears released Blackout in 2007 which incorporates electro influences in her music. It's later evolved by Lady Gaga with her electro/euro pop sound the next year, and Ke$ha (with TikTok) defined the pop music for the next coming years. The sound died around 2014 when alternative pop became mainstream (Lorde and Lana Del Rey for example), and 2015 pop is redefined after Jack U, Bieber - Where R U Now was released (imo).
