As a part of the project, Cool Roofs for Rural Poor: Saving Energy, Beating the Heat Affordably-which was funded by the Innovation Challenge Program (fiscal 2014) of the World Bank, International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad, and Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur-conducted experiments to assess the impact of cool roofs on two unconditioned school buildings in rural and peri-urban areas in India. This video presents the details of the experiment and its results.

But some of our academics personals and research personals drains lakhs of rupees of available fund in name of some basic research. Even after that if something was found they don't even want that normal people should know about it. Just call some of your friends and fellow team members, host a workshop explaining conducted research and some goverment funded lunch. That's it, it concludes whole research system with no real benefit to scientific or general population. Sorry to say but hugely disappointed.

soda lime stone, sea salt, white glue, white distumber, make it thick, apply with wiper. Then affix green fiber net on your roof, if you afford, also apply lime stone white wash on outer walls, and get more then 20 degree less temperature inside home. God bless you.

the most obvious thing that is overlooked is the ventilator on the upper walls..ventilators are cost-effective and easy means to reduce heat but getting ignored in most construction in the last decade.

A Good and probed recipe for painting roof of walls with lime (CaO) is: Mix well and keep stirring while adding 4 Kg of powdered Lime in 10 Liters of clean water, heat will be released. Let the mix cool down for 1 or 2 hours. Thereafter, add to the mix 1 kg of White Cement plus 250 grams of Powdered Salt, Mix well all components until a homogeneous blend is available. On a dust free surface, apply 2 hands of this paint. To avoid cracks, the best time to paint in sunny places is early in the morning before the heat is on or late in the afternoon. Apply the first hand horizontally and let it dry, thereafter apply the second hand vertically (or the opposite) to ensure a good coverage. Note: Stir well before taking paint from the container. The rain won´t wash away this bright white paint.

White Galvalume metal roofing costs less than Rs.90/sqft to install over a RCC. And a best method of reducing sun's radiant heat gain. Metal elevated roofing also increases the durability of the RCC Slab as no water falls in it and also provides a good shading. It also provides a lot of shaded place for other usages.

Shade. Put a material on the roof such as old pallets on the roof and you have 100% radiance. Aluminum foil. You can cover a roof in aluminum foil for 5 cents a square foot, adhered with tar or paint. Then put irregulat shaped rocks on top to create shaded areas.

Thanks for the video. Can you share some best products that are available in the market now. My parents living in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, have been using this coolant to battle the summer months. But their experience is that, the white coating soon washes off after a good rainfall or blows off soon after the rain, and won't even last through the summer months (3-4 months). Is it the product they used or in general they are like that.

It's a sheer disappointment, shall we call testing already available solution in the market as a research that too from such prestigious institution. Cool roof paints are available in the market for almost 8-9 years. And Iam very curious to know what new has come out from the workshop. A valid research would have been invention of a cool roof paint which gives significant cooling effect and durable (i.e., that can withstand rains)

They should have conducted the study with different materials to see how they compared to one another. Looks like they went into this research with the agenda to prove their point that white coating does reflect heat and keeps indoors cool. It was obvious from the beginning but looks like they want to impress upon policy makers and architects to adopt this method.
@zazugee

i dont think anyone need to demonstrate that cool roofs are cooler the issue is if they are worth the investement compared to other cooling methods like are they energy and cost effective? enduser rarely will think of changing their roof pain or tilling to solve overheating problems they tend to use active cooling methods instead of passive methods hence the point of such economic and energetic passive methods and studies because they demonstrate the benefit of using passive technics vs active and energy consuming ones

I give a big 👎 for it. Nature has made everything in such a meaningful and significant way that our earth absorbs the heat of sun shine. But in between earth and sun we constructed our homes. Hence there is no direct full absorption but a little. Now when we put the white paint on roof top, definitely it will cool the building but the reflection will heat the atmosphere. If all applies it, then imagine how drastically our atmosphere temperature will increase.

@@punnitji7399 1:- rebuild the rooftop with insulating material. 2:- apply a thin layer(size in mm) of reflective or heat insulators material all over the rooftop with the help of adhesive so that the layer can be removed in winter's when the same region get's to a freezing temperatures.

Please explain how a part is cool and other part is hot...heat is a penetrating energy..transfer..the heat can go from uncoated to under the un coated area..of coverage is full it would be superb..hats off to the simple white cememt..limestone..fevicol and alum ...it just works wonders

Well what about mud house🤗 This video is and the innovation idea is total waste there is nothing new! We already studied in our school that darker material absorbs much heat and white material reflects heat! Where is innovation in that?
