Sometimes if you look good in warm colors you may be cool toned. Because of complimentary colors are on the opposite of the color wheel. It also depends on hair color too. If you have cool toned hair you'll look good in warm toned clothes. If that makes sense :)
@timothysherreyehler50959 жыл бұрын
+Shelby Reece Actually, if you look best in warm shades, you likely have a warm, yellow-based skin tone. A person with a pink or blue-toned complextion looks much better in cool-toned shades, and colours. Complimentary colôurs do not flatter the opposite skin tone; that is why people have their 'Colours done', and determine theîr skin tone so they ẃill know the colours, shades, and intensities of them, to best flatter their skin tone. People should wear the same tones in clothes, face make up, eye make up,lipstick, hair colour, and jewellery as their skin tone. If you have a cool-toned complexion,your môst flattering make up, hair colour, jewellery, etc. will also be cool-toned., and vice versa.Hair colôur can actually confuse things; if someone colours their hair opposite to their skin tone, it can be extremely difficult to wear your most flattering colours. Your hair should match your skin tone, and not compete with it.. Those with cool-toned ĉomplexions should dye their hair using cool-toned ôr neutral shades, and not warm. Hope that helps, Sherrey❤

So I decided to wear anastasia fawn n kevyn aucoin scultping powder in medium they are cool tone and omg I love them, they mimic a shadow on my face. I keep it everything cool on my warm skin, except for eyeshadows. I like my eyeshadows warm, cool tone eyeshadows ie purple make me look like I have a bruised eye

Thank you Marlena! I see so many people who do not understand this concept, and they wear shades that just do not flatter their skin tones at all! I had my 'Colours' done way back in 1981, and I have been able to wear make up, and clothes that make me look the best with my skin tone, and Colours. I strongly dîsagree that you should wear blushes, and face make up that is opposite to your Colours, and skin tone! That goes against everything I have ever learned, or experienced. I have a very fair, cool-toned, blue-based "Winter' complexion, with porcelain skin, and dark brown hair, and eyes. The blushes, and lipsticks I can wear are true blue-toned reds, cool-toned lilacs (I wear 'Secret Admirer'), and cool-toned pinks (I wear 'Hanky Panky blush'), some berries, and fuschias. I absolutely cannot wear peaches, corals, yellow-toned reds, or rusty browns at all, which are warm-toned! Colours that look best on me are black, pure white, primary colours, and jewel tones. Cool-toned colours do look better on me as regards eye make up, as long as they also flatter brown eyes. I use contour shades that are also cool- toned like a shade similar to NYX“s blush in Taupe not just, because I am a 'Winter', but also because contour is creating shadows, and they are never warm, or orange, but cool-toned grey or taupe.. I did not think anyone should use a warm-toned bronzer for contouring for that specific reason. My bronzer must also not be orange, or warm. Self tanning can make it confusing when determining skin tone, especilly if it is not neutral.Another way to figure out skin tone is seeing which colour metals of jewellery looks better against your skin. I look best in 'cool'silver jewellery like pewter, white gold, silver, and platinum. I cannot wear 'warm' yellow gold, copper, or brass shades. Just looking at you, I personally think your engagement ring flatters your skin tone better than your yellow gold rings do, and I actually think ýou have cool-toned skin, and you would be a "Summer" or "Winter". “Summers' can wear pinks, and cooler-toned shades, but less intense, and in pastels, rather than primary colours (some colours overlap like purple, and turquoise). You are wearing Winter colours with your blôuse, but your make up conflicts, as it is quite warm-toned, althôugh it îs hard to tell îf you are wearing a blue-based red, or an orangy warm red lipstick. Your blush looks warm-toned as well to me, änd I think you look lovely in cooler-toned colours. I almost think you have similar skin tone to me, although you are not as fair. You look gorgeous in jêwel tones, black, bright pinks, purple (like your hair was), and colours like peach, mustard, rust, olive green don“t flatter your skin tone as much. I also look horrid in peaches, rusts, beiges, olives, moss greens,, orangey reds, etc. Anyway, thanks for doing this video, and I look forward to many more like this, Sherrey in Southern Ontario❤

+Timothy Sherrey Ehler I agree sooo much with you. I am cool toned all over. There's not a single hint of warmth in my complexion, hair or eyes. And I love it! I prefer to emphasize the cool tones in my appearance by always, always, always going with cool toned makeup.
@timothysherreyehler50959 жыл бұрын
***** Audra, which colour of jewellery looks the absolute best on you? Does gold look lovely next to your skin, or do sliver, pewter,and white gold, etc look better? I am also wondering if you have any roseacea that maybe contributing to the reddish tones on your skin. With cool tones there are those like me (I am a 'Winter') that can wear primary colours, pure white, black, and jewel tones, but we cannot wear pastels. There are also people with brown eyes, brown hair, and porcelain skin who also have cool- toned skin, but they can wear pastel pinks, blues,burgundy, lavenders, navy, grey, white (but no whiter than what a tissue is), but NOT black or jewel tones. They are known to be a 'Summer' in Colours. Just like there are two variants with cool tones, there are two with warm tones: 'Springs' who sparkle wearing pastel peaches, tans, gold, cream, turquoise, etc, and 'Autumns' who can wear darker mustards, olives, teals, purples, brown, etc. Strangely enough , there are colours I can wear as a winter such as turquoise,which is also a 'Spring' colour, and dark purple, which is also an 'Autumn' colour which is odd to me. I will wait on your answer about the colour of metals you can wear, but I do know that anyone with cool tones would not look their best with peach or apricot, especially close to their face. They actually use a large swatch of pink and one of peach, initially, to determine whether someone has warm, or cool toned skin when someone' has colour analysis done. Your current wardrobe colours of navy, raspberry, grey, and red are 'Summer' colours, but black can only be worn by those of us who are 'Winters'. I also have grey, and blue-toned red in my colour palette as well. Red pops up in all palettes in different shades (whether mixed with blue or orange). Teal would be either a 'Spring' or 'Autumn' colour depending on its intensity. Looking forward to hearing back from you, Sherrey❤

I do have a question though. I am a cool to cool-neutral undertone and i absolutely cannot pull off a warmer or even a neutral blush tone, it looks hideous! My question is, in using the "opposite blush undertone" description you gave, is that a general rule of thumb? Because I use a cooler-neutral foundation, a cool contour and a super cool (lilac-colored) blusher. Honestly, should i really do that (blush undertone) differently?
@euhm86799 жыл бұрын
+Allyson C. (Ally) I think the blush rule is a generalization, so if cool toned blush suits you better, wear that! You are the best judge on that matter :) It's mostly a matter of taste, I think. I'm warm and I kinda wear both.
@Allyson6C9 жыл бұрын
Potentially Chique I hear what you're saying, but the reason I mentioned it is because she explained it once and then said (for clarification purposes) "let me say it again" and she proceeded to explain the "opposite blush" rule(?). That's why I asked if it was indeed a 'rule of thumb' and if I really should change this. I get that I should wear it if it works, but if it isn't a "generalization", then WHY doesn't it work for me? Understand lol?
@Chikkolle9 жыл бұрын
+Allyson Sixx It doesn't work for you because we are all individuals with our own oppinions. Your oppinion (which is the only one that matters!) is that you look best in cool toned blush. I might agree with you, and the girl next to me on the bus might disagree. It's as simple as that. I think I look ridiculous in warm toned blush, and just like you I have cool undertones. I'm not even cool-neutral, just straight up cool.

I do agree that most people have a warm or yellow undertone, I would actually say about 90% of people have a yellow undertone. But I do not agree that more fair skinned people have cool toned skin than medium to dark skinned people. This is a very widely believed myth. Fair, medium, and dark skinned people have an equal amount of cool and warm undertones. Actually, nobody is just a warm or cool toned. Everyone has a mixture of the two tones. What matters is the ratio of yellow to pink tones.

Marlena, thank you so much for this, I hope you do a whole lot more of these videos. I love learning about makeup and especially love hearing tips, tricks and colours that compliment my skin tone. Another way to tell if your warm or cool is to stand in front of a mirror, get a piece of white paper and hold it next to your skin/face in a well lit room. Compare your skin colour next to the white paper. If your skin looks rose/gold or yellow, you're probably warm. If it looks pinky or blueish compared to the white, you're probably cool. I just found this the easiest way. I found it hard to tell using vein colour for some reason. The jewelry test using silver and gold is a great way to tell too. I'm fair to light-medium but i have obvious yellow tones to my skin. Oh, and I just bought the 9 piece set of blushes on sale, i'm soo exited to try them out! yay!

Right now, I dont have too much of a problem being tanned from the summer but my olive skin is at its palest, nothing ever matches me. Olive is usually classified as a deep skin color. But as I can testify to, it can also be what I can only describe as a pale green color. My mother is very warm toned, her skin being yellowy golden and when I compare my skin to hers its clearly got that green tone to it. I wish there was some guidelines to follow for a light/pale olive skin tone.

+Beauty Psycho I guess I'm just being picky. I've tried neutral foundations and they seem to look pinky on me. I did find a few by maybelline fit me that work nicely this summer but my tan is fading and it's almost too dark. When I've used yellow based foundations when I'm super pale, it too looks obvious. Ever used the EX1 brand? It's not available in the US but I'm thinking it might be worth a try. Thank you for you suggestions! Not too many people have the issues we do in this part of the world.

+L'Aurora Borealis My favorite ones that match my skintone are It Cosmetic CC cream in Fair, Skin79 BB (orange one), Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-h Full Coverage... in Fair Sand, UD Naked in 1.0 but I feel it is not yellow enough and a bit too light so I will be adding Cover FX costume cover drops in G20 into it, Too Faced Tinted BB SPF 20 in Snow Glow. I have UD Naked 1 pallette, even though I prefer cool-toned eyeshadows and this palette is more warm I still picked this one over Naked 2.

+Lynette I treat my overall skintone as neutral-cool when I choose clothes, jewelry, eyeshadows, blush/contour/bronzer and lipstick. Pale olive people look best in jeweled colors like navy, blues, burgundy, greys, black, white, puple (cool) I think. But when it comes to foundation I go for slightly yellow-olive to contract redness in my face. If I wear neutral foundation my face also looks too pink so I always make sure there is enough yellow in it. Maybe you are picking foundations that are too dark? Match to your neck not other way around. Have you tried any foundations/CC creams I mentioned in the previous comment (most of them are yellow-olive)? Alima Pure and Meow Cosmetics have straight up olive shades that work awesome but they are mineral makeup and I can only wear that in the summer (too drying).

I would like to mention that our hormones can cause a lot of redness in our face -- blotchy cheeks, etc. This doesn't mean that one with red blotchy cheeks is an automatic cool-tone. Look at an area of your chest where you don't get any sun. That will reveal your true skin tone for picking your foundation, etc. I learned through quite a bit of trial and error that I am a Neutral. My red cheeks looked a ghastly dark pink with cool foundation, and warm foundation was too yellow. I now use the L'Oreal True Match foundation in N1 Soft Ivory -- PERFECT match!

My daughter and I have the same problem, but her's is much worse. Due to me being both fair, and naturally pink cheeked with allergy brought on rosacea at times, I thought I had pink undertones. First, determine if it is the surface of the skin that is pink, which is brought on by acne, allergies, etc? This is not an undertone, but just your skin's condition. Second, determine if you have naturally pink cheeks or pink undertones? My undertones are not pink, just my cheeks are. This is brought on by blood vessels near the surface. She is discussing pink toned all over your body. My son looks like this. If you press on his skin, where you pressed, turns white, and then goes back pink. He has skin that is similar to an albino's. This is pink undertones. Think of somebody that is so white that they look either blue or pink. Typically, these are your "gingers"-red hair, freckles, and extremely pale skin, that almost looks lightly burned a lot of the time. Very few people truly have pink undertones. I am warm toned,, with yellow undertones, with pale skin, freckles, naturally pink cheeks, and brownish/reddish hair. I thought the same thing about my face, and so would get ivory foundation, and looked DEAD, lol. I finally spoke with a color analyst, and she shared the above with me. She said you do not have pink undertones, you have yellow, and are a warm skintone.I actually have to pick foundation that is much darker than my face in the winter to look right, and then put it all over my neck, too. This then does what foundation does, it puts color and life back into the face. I use a full coverage, to help cover some off the freckles and the redness. Then, I use highlighter, blush, powder, and bronzer to get the color variation that I need in the different places. My daughter has to use the green, color neutralizer first, and then use a full coverage makeup on top of that. She previously could not wear blush, and struggled with people asking her if she was sick all of the time due to how dark the pink was. She also had the makeup transfer to her hands, even when set, and the pink would creep through. She tried several from the drugstore that did not work for her, and then found GREAT success with the green Becca neutralizer, and one of the Becca blushes. She can now wear blush,, and put it only where she wants her cheeks to look pink, and her makeup always looks flawless now! Hope this helps!

I know this isn't a new video and I'm late to the party, but I'm very confused by this. I used to model a lot and my makeup was done professionally for shows. I learned a great deal from them. I am very warm toned with yellow/golden blonde hair and yellow skin tone, some ruddiness in my cheeks when I'm flushed. I was always so pleasantly surprised when a makeup artist put me in warmer tones, like a yellow-based foundation, coral-orange blush and coral lipstick. The Charles of the Ritz guys were THE BEST - on (tealish blue) eyes: beautiful browns and peaches with tiny teal/turquoise pop. I never, ever looked anywhere near as good if they went with pinks at all anywhere expect like "pink chocolates." So what you're saying is that the ones that looked almost jarring to me is the right way and the one that looks harmonious is the wrong one? I feel like I've misunderstood something. I know with reds, you're supposed to stick to the same. Cool tone skin is supposed to use cool toned, blue based reds. Warm is supposed to used warmer, orange based reds. I'm not sure that rule applies to other colors.

Thank you again for your tutorial. You solved all the riddles which had confused me for so many years! Yoko.
@Andyt119 жыл бұрын
For contour powders, you actually want to use a color with cool/neutral undertones, no matter what your under tone is, because natural shadows are gray and have cool undertones. The whole point of contouring is to add definition to the face using light and shadow, and bronzers can't mimic shadows because they *bronze* and *add warmth*. Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder in Medium is the perfect shade for light to medium/tan skin. He's coming out with more shades for every skin tone. Something more affordable would be the MAC Sculpting Powder in Sculpt or Shadowy. The Becca Low Light is also really great, and this leans more warm/neutral, so good for those who want a "warmer" contour but don't want a snickers bar stripe. If you want to make your own shade, buy a black cream color from Ben Nye and add THE SMALLEST AMOUNT of black to your foundation. (pump/pour the foundation on to a palette or the back of your hand first, of course). Adding black will create the perfect color for YOUR skin tone.

+Andy T That's the general makeup rule that someone told long ago and everyone just goes with. Have you seen someone with very warm skin, say yellow undertone or a caramel skinned girl with a cool toned contour? It looks dirty… Shadows are just that: darker versions of your skin. If your skin is warm, you need something a couple shades darker not cooler.
@ginarussell74489 жыл бұрын
+Makeup Geek lighting matters too,though. I am warm toned, but my natural shadow is very clearly cool in most (not all) types of light, so I use a cooler contour with a light hand to emphasize it. Nyx taupe is my favorite. It looks good everywhere but the bathroom at work. The lighting in there makes me look like death anyway, so I deal with it.

I have red/pink undertones with fair skin so would technically be cool toned . But, for some reason, cool foundations always make me look pink or redder. I always have looked better with the yellow warm under-toned foundations that counteracted the redness. I don't get how a cool toned complexion that is already pinkish or reddish needs more pink cool toned colors in foundation?
@euhm86799 жыл бұрын
+urthebest1122 It's not so much that it 'needs' anything, the point of foundation is not really to counteract the colour, just to set a base that matches with your skin. Redness does not always mean cool toned (I'm an example myself), it could just be flush. Maybe try different brands (and match foundation to your neck!), and if they all make you look weird you may be neutral or warm. Good luck!
@Allyson6C9 жыл бұрын
The interesting thing about what youre saying is that you may indeed be a more neutral undertone or fall on the cooler side of neutral (as i sometimes do depending on the brand) and you may just have some ruddines to your complexion as many of us fair-skinned people do. I mistook my rudiness for a complete cool undertone for a long time many yrs ago, only to find that im a cooler neutral. I mistook the rudiness and uneven skintone for a cooler undertone. Perhaps you are a neutral. But the other side of the coin is that you could be a cool tone and just have some ruddiness to contend with and the yellower toned foundations are simply counteracting that redness. Theres no one answer to this that fits across the board for all. The only one that can say definitively what your actual undertone is, is you or someone who can actually see you and see what foundations work or better yet, which ones dont work. Good luck! 😉
@Cinder19879 жыл бұрын
+Allyson C. (Ally) Yes, I can wear the neutrals so I am probably in that range but even some of those look pasty on me. The yellow based always look best and that's judging from what I see and when I've asked several people around me, the yellow based warm foundations always look better on me then a the cool or even neutral. But, technically, I'm a cool toned as I've been told by a couple of makeup pros. I guess I'm one of those exceptions that don't fit the rules, lol. Thanks for the thoughts! )
@Allyson6C9 жыл бұрын
Lol yes! Perhaps so! That may very well be that you are one of the exceptions! 😉
@beautypsycho71399 жыл бұрын
+urthebest1122 those cool toned people who don't have a lot of redness in their face look fine with cool-toned foundation. However if a cool toned person has a lot of redness on their face (which a lot of people do) then it needs counteracting with neutral or yellow foundation otherwise it will just make the face even more red. So those people who have even skintone can match exactly but others need conteracting.

What if you have warm tone, but a redness due to mild rosacea? I'm thinking warm for foundation, but what about blush & contour? Pink blush seems to highlight the redness /pinkness from the rosacea. Usually end up with a coral. I've never been happy with any contours, they always seem to look muddy/ dirty. Maybe because they were warm and due to the pinkieness from the rosacea I need something cooler? The pinkness from the rosacea makes it confusing.

I'm definitely warm and i prefer warmer blush colours. I feel warm tones "harmonize" well with my complexion, when cool tones kinda "fight" with my warm skin. Purple blush is too contrast to my greenish-yellow skin, i feel like a clown wearing it. Anyone else?
@taylerbrumble59709 жыл бұрын
yeah, I agree that you should use blush and lip colors that "harmonize" with your skin. I'm NW20, and anything peach I put on my skin pulls super orange. Same with coral lipsticks. As long as I cover up redness with foundation, it doesn't make me look too pink. there is a limit to how cool I can go. I can't pull off that greige trend because anything gray makes me look like a corpse.

I love Marlena and her videos but I think , generally in a well structured video you should mention the ''rule'' that says ''choose the same undertone as you in products because it looks more harmonized'' . You should mention both ''rules'' because many people have different prefrences and each of these two cases have different effects . If you choose the same undertone blush then it's going to look more natural , more like you , it's gonna make your face more awaken . If you choose the opposite undertone it's going to pop more , not have everything too matchy-matchy and balance the undertones . I prefer for me and my clients to go the ''same undertone'' route because it looks more pulled together and everything just ties up nicely (imo) . But of course eveyone can choose whatever they want . I just wanted to mention this in case anyone was wandering or was confused .

Olive is green, olive is cool toned but obviously looks warm its confusing
@Allyson6C9 жыл бұрын
Bella Davies actually olive is a warm green. Ill explain. If you look at a regular (crayola crayon-type) green on the color wheel, next to it youll see that olive green is just that regular (crayola-type) green with yellow added to it. So, because yellow has been added to it, this would changr it to a warmer color. To make the green cooler, you would add blue to it, turning the green to a teal or turquouse. Thus making olive green a warmer color and teal/turquoise a cooler color. Any color with yellow added will begin to change the color to a warmer tone. Any color with blue added will begin to change it to a cooler tone. I hope this provides some clarity! 😊

I wished there was a norm of makeup labelling without the words warm and cool - because they are bound to definition and perception. According to your definition I'm warm, but according to MAC and many drug store companies I'm cool. OCC does the labelling right imo - they use Y for yellow-based and R for red-based base products. Per se, red does NOT make a colour cool! In reality it's the addition of blue/cyan and/or absense of yellow. For someone like me who went to an art school this is really a pet peeve, but who said the makeup industry was logical, right?

+Stephanie Klauck and +DancesWithBeauty If you have cool-toned skin, wear cool-toned foundation. If you have a good colour match it won't accentuate the pink. Wearing warm-toned (or even neutral, to an extent) foundation will always make you look yellow and will never look natural. Like she was explaining with the blush, you can add warmth to your face in other ways, but foundation is only meant to even out your complexion/natural skin colour, whatever shade and undertone that may be!
@JennyWas139 жыл бұрын
+Stephanie Klauck This is only really a problem with cheap drugstore foundations (like covergirl) that run VERY pink in their pale shades and don't actually look like skin, and then oxidise even pinker again. I avoid drugstore foundations altogether for this reason. But if it's a good natural looking cool toned foundation, it would look fine.

Hey Veronika, I feel your pain! I am extremely pale naturally, so everybody called me fair and told me to get ivory shades. I always looked dead in them. I am very pale until I tan, and then I tan a golden. I also have golden freckles, naturally pink cheeks, and a neck that is 4 shades lighter than my face. I finally went to Sephora to get the color analysis done. Even they had trouble at first, for they wanted to try to come up with a color that was in between my neck and face color. This shade looked horrible! Then, a different consultant came up and said although you are very pale, you have golden undertones, which means that you are warm toned. Therefore, ignore the fair and the pink cheeks, and the white lily neck. Come up with a darker shade that is warm that is flattering for your face with your hair and eyes. Then, you will have to use the foundation on your neck until you get a tan to get the right color. This worked! She found a shade that was perfect for me! She also gave me a color IQ number that was for the shade of foundation that I should look for, not just the one that my "face scanned for". I was so thankful for this! If you have a Sephora near you, I would highly recommend trying to get them to help you. You would not have to do the full makeover. They do free 10 minute consultations per category, so you could get feedback on the right shade, and then will even let put the sample on you, so that you can see what it looks like. Some people do not know this either, but they will give you up to 3 free samples in each section of the store, so you can try it before committing, and they also allow you to return the makeup if it is in the wrong shade. Don't give up, though, for even the color consultants stated that I was very diffficult to match, but were able to find the perfect shade for me! They can help you, too:)!

very helpful marlena! I think I'm pretty neutral...another thing I did to figure it out was I got the color iq done at sephora, and whatever they matched me to I take that bottle with me to the drugstore to help find a match. I love these educational videos...we need more of them!

Ew I hate people like you. You don't know her, many people fidget due to underlying reasons usually anxiety, ADD, ADHD or sometimes because of past abuse. please please please STOP grasping at straws to be hateful !!! Very annoying that everyone on KZbin does it instead of just simply moving the fuck along. Do people like you realize there are 1000000s of channels out there? Why would you watch someone that drives you nuts? Misery loves company right?

Ugh I feel sorry for people like you. Something could be 99.9% good and you'd find that .1% to be annoying and whiny about. Must be a miserable way to go through life really.

I love your videos. But one thing... you work hard for your company. You built something you are proud of and you are confident in your products. Please don't apologize for "pushing" your products. I haven't tried them myself, but I plan on placing an order after all the Christmas rush, but I have heard great things about them from a lot of people. So push your brand all you like. :)
