Im not going to change my coolant....because i can save money by not doing it....Well to those who dont....you will spend more in the longrun....because once that coolant gets to a certain level of acidity....its going to eat thru your headgasket....not to mention the calcites in the water building up and punching holes thru your radiator(unless you use distilled water) as well and possibly expanding between your head gasket mating surface and head thus causing a leak even if it doesnt eat thru it first....so kids.....change your coolant like dustin...and save in the longrun...good video Dustin....and Thank You for sharing!

I dont agree these trucks are known for leaking rads.....every silverado I have had the radiator begins to leak where the plastic tanks on side meet the aluminum fins. Change the fluid then

So if the acidity hasn't changed by a pH meter then there's no need to change right?

I just wanna say I heisted to click on your video (it looked scary lol) but as a girl who was alone and I accidentally put green anti coolant where there was red, this helped a lot and I learned something new :) thanks for being nice explaining this!!!!

Right on ; got my 17’ to do . Was going to check it with Coolant ph strips first. Been through it with 13’ Camaro . Yeah pump was air locked and squeezed top radiator hose while runnning and it finally pickup prime . Scary !!! At least it had a radiator with cap !!! Easier to fill - It’s a can a worms but ; git-r-done !!!- ✊🏻👍👌

I just did the coolant flush and fill with my 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 L83 engine, here are some added notes that should be kept in mind when you do your coolant change next. System capacity is 16 litres (for my truck L83), with taking the coolant surge tank cap off and opening the radiator pet cock I was only able to get 5 litres of coolant out in a go. Meaning that I had to then close the pet cock and fill the surge tank with drinking water, run the engine to circulate the coolant and then repeat the process to drain more coolant out. I stopped this drain and refill process after I had drained about 40 litres of coolant, still was getting some pinkish orange even at the end, but it was clean enough that I then just filled the system with concentrate. However since you can only fill the system about 4 to 5 litres in a go before having to dilute it again this involved some calculations to get the concentration correct. What works out to a 50/50 mix is to do the following, drain 3.8 litres from your engine, add 3.8 litres of 50/50. Circulate, drain 3.8 litres of coolant add 3.8 litres of concentrate. Circulate, drain 3.8 litres of coolant, add 3.8 litres of concentrate, circulate and you're good to go! A long process but that's one way to get the job done! The only other way to drain more coolant out of the engine is to access the left side and right side engine coolant block plugs and to remove the heater element, but these three things are basically completely inaccessible so I wouldn't advise, I would stick with the dilution method I've gone with. Hope this helps anyone else out there who is thinking of giving this a go!

Great video @Dustin, based on your instructions i was able to get to petcock without any tools needed. (from bottom of the truck as well as from TOP of the truck) :) My question is regarding air stuck inside the engine/hose/radiator... i tried to squeeze the hoses after filling the coolant with engine running, however not sure if all air came out, do you suggest to let the engine run for a while with coolant reservoir tank cap removed ? so any air bubble left can come out ? I am wondering if i close the cap the trapped air might not get out ? please correct if i am missing anything.

If you tow you will notice cooling system issues over time. My 5.3L LM7 used to tow in summer heat maintaining 188F on a cruise. Over time rust and other contaminants reduce block heat transfer to the coolant. Flush it, you will notice the difference. Also ditch the Dex cool. Your water pump will last longer.

I have a 2016 with 5.3. Replaced coolant temp sensor for the second time in 2-3 months, fans went off, ac started working, and heat guage came to life. I just got home and as I was pulling in, fans came on, guage dropped, and ac quit. Any ideas? Am I just getting faulty sensors from Oreillys? I even tried to make sure it wasn't some sort of air pocket. I'm ready to set it in fire

You do realize that coolant is not just to stop freeze up, it is also used to allow raise the boiling point of the water. Need this stuff in a desert just as much as in a deep freeze. But, not my truck, and never met a texan yet who would listen (or could read) what really needs to be done and then do it correctly.

Appears just the radiator was drained; NO flush of the coolant in the engine. Like doing half an oil change. To do per manual, it needs to be completely drained, radiator, engine, hoses, core. Just another backyard mechanic with poor filming procedures on top of not doing the correct job.
