I always thought it was the spring which controlled when thermostat opened and closed. Can you please explain why this not the case. Is the one you put in slightly smaller or something so it opens at a lower temp? Hard to tell on video and no I'm not a pro just a diyer.
@MikeOn2Wheels2 жыл бұрын
What opens the thermostat is the wax filled cylinder in the middle which when exposed to heat expands and pushes the valve open. I’m sure changing the volume or type of wax used is how they achieve varying temperature ranges. The springs job is usually to oppose the valve opening and close it as it cools or keep it closed until the force from the cylinder pushes it open.
@KayJay9402 жыл бұрын
@@MikeOn2Wheels see I thought the spring just acted like a release valve when pressure was high enough it would push sping back/in and then when it got lower spring would close. This opening and closing would release hot coolant to the rad and allow cool coolant to rush in since it's a closed system.
@MikeOn2Wheels2 жыл бұрын
@@KayJay940 coolant pressure would be roughly equal on both side of the thermostat in a closed system. Drop a thermostat in a pot of boiling water, it’s actually kinda cool to see how it opens and then closes again in a pot of cold water. It’s a good way to test a thermostat.

Tried a 180 t stat and fans on early, I still stay above 210*F at idle and it’ll creep past it. Driving on the interstate and it’s at the tab to the right of the 210 mark sometimes more. Tried the oem stat with weep holes drilled in. No change but the coolant temp will drop in the rain or extreme cold. Put the 180 back in it. Same results again. Ordered a new temp sensor to try next. Engines prefer to run cold. Colder the air the closer the molecules and the more air molecules you get in chamber. Basically in the winter everyone is running a CAI.

How do you get that program to tune the vehicle after? Do you work on other people's vehicles or have a shop somewhere?
@Patrick_Gray3 жыл бұрын
I owned an automotive air conditioning and radiator shop from 1973 to 2002. When 195 degree thermostats first came out many people would change it to 180 degrees or even to 160 degrees. I thought the vehicles should be kept at design temperature so I did not. We did a lot to keep radiators clean inside and outside. We upgraded to larger radiators and cooling fans to increase cooling capacity (not normal operating temperature). We had a radiator flow tester to test radiators and rodded or replaced them if needed and did are part to keep engines at proper temperatures. My question is why you changed all the way to 160 degrees. When the car is sitting still or is in slow traffic the radiator fan setting will probably control the coolant temperature. But when cruising at say 50 MPH it would seem the coolant temperature would be a few degrees over 160 degrees (start of thermostat to open). So there would be a wide gap of operating temperatures.
@villagomezjaime963 жыл бұрын

@@villagomezjaime96 you want it right there. That’s where it’s designed to run. 210 or a little abound is good. Any less and your mpg will drop. The truck will be more responsive at a lower temp thermostat that’s the only pro

I'm certain your level of expertise is leaps and bounds greater that mine but I do own this type of vehicle in the video and unless you are towing heavy loads frequently in desert heat, (probably less than 1% of GM truck owners, most folks that do this under these conditions use much heavier duty 2500 and 3500 series trucks anyway) there is no concievable reason to deviate from the GM spec thermostat for this engine which is 207F. Fuel mileage will degrade also and be noticably less using cooler than 207F spec thermostats as well.

Unecessary. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". If you're referring to the "coolant temp sensor" I'm not sure what you mean by the "pressure sensor" I just replaced the thermostat on my 2016 LT 5.3 today. Was just the thermostat, running at normal 207-210F now after replacement. Coolant temp sensor works fine, otherwise temp gauge with new thermostat would not read proper operating temp. Getting the genuine GM AC/Delco part was a mother. Local O'Reileys, Advance, and Autozone said no, RockAuto no go either. Finally found one online after digging. Local GM dealer charges $500 and some change for this stupidly easy fix. With that OEM part hard as heck to find and GM dealers charging a mint for this repair I smell a racket. Count me out, won and done.

A 160 with tune can actually make you way more power because engines like cooler dense air. But also a 160 will imrpove reliabilty, fuel mileage and the life of your engine. Anyone who tells you different has never used one to know the difference. Like I already said. I have been running a 160 for nearly 20 years now which is enough time to experince the clear difference.
