Whitwell to Shorwell | Vectis Trail - Day Five | Isle of Wight Walks | Cool Dudes Walking Club

The fifth day of the Vectis Trail, a 74-mile walk on the Isle of Wight. This section starts in Whitwell. I visited the Hoy Monument and St. Catherine's Oratory also known as the Pepperpot, before walking through Chale and inland to Shorwell. It was 12.7 miles.

Another fab Isle walk ! The Isle certainly has spectacular views for miles around. These are a few of my favourite hiking & walking places that I visited in France about 25 years ago & well worth a visit. 1.Le Puy-en-velay. 2.Carnac Stones. 3.Chateauxs of the Loire Valley. I chose Bob Nutz, I'm out....never mind! Looking forward to Part 6 & seeing your other ventures.

This is my favorite part of the Isle of wight . Love the Pepperpot and views and walking near St Catherine's lighthouse. Made me laugh, medieval community service lol. I remember different scary characters growing up , I liked Worzel gummidge but had some scary characters and the Joker from Batman. I'm sure there's lots more. Some of my favorite places in the world are Kluane national park in the Yukon, Canada, The blue ridge mountains of Virginia, the North York moors coast and of course the Isle of Wight :) love your watercolour of the Pepperpot. I must learn to paint one day.

Here is something really odd cool dude. I googled Alan Garner this morning when you mentioned this book, it was the first I had heard of him. Then I was just looking through the Booker Prize nominees and he has been nominated aged 88 for a book called Treacle Walkers. Very strange that he should come up twice in one day.

Postbox wearing a woolly pumpkin-covered hat is definitely a new one for the spotters handbook! 😯📮👒 I remember those “read it yourself” ladybirds books!! Haven’t seen them for yeeeaaarrrs, and funnily enough those two were my favs. Always used to ask my mum to read em to me at bedtime, and she’d rush thru em in hopes of getting me to go to sleep sooner, while I’d remind her of every bit she skipped as I knew every word of the Billy Goats Gruff by heart. 🐐👹 Beautiful places to visit- would definitely recommend the Lake District. Am a big fan of lake Windermere/bowness. ⛵️🏞🌤

When I lived in California, I enjoyed wandering King's Canyon and Sequoia NP. In the UK, St Kilda, Scotland is one of my preferred haunts. As a boy, I was unnerved by banshees... ghosts as well, but the idea of hearing a banshee was at the top of my scary list. 👻

My favourite hike ever is to the Upper Dewey Lakes, in Skagway, Alaska. Only a 6 miler but incredible scenery round every turn. Scariest thing from my childhood was a book called 'Orrible Murders, that for some bizarre reason was in our bookcase at home. I remember the cover was yellow, and had a woman with a sword being shoved through her head. Proper grizzly.

One of my favorite places in the world is also a lighthouse! Point Cabrillo in Mendocino, California; it has a unique coastal village, lots of trails & seals & sea lions & whales if you go in the spring. While there, you can take Orr Springs Road from Ukiah and stop for a soak in the natural hot springs, then see the world's tallest trees in Montgomery Woods State Nature Reserve....

The Singing Ringing Tree was so scary that my brain has gone into denial and I can’t remember why. My favourite place was sitting outside a little cafe under a bridge over the Bhospurus in Istanbul, with a beer and a plate of friedmussels in breadcrumbs watching the world go by. I don’t remember why for that one either.

Great walk. Best of the Vectis so far. Love all these random buildings stuck in the middle of fields. Westward Ho was one of my favourite places. Good views of Lundy island. I was terrified by quarter mass when I was a child. It scared the life out of me. Shall put a bid in on the water colour.

Hi Marek, our childhoods were remarkably similar! Until I was about 9 years old, I was most frightened by the blanket chest in my parents bedroom as I was convinced Dracula lived in it. With the only loo being upstairs, it meant I learned to get all the way downstairs unbelievably quickly in only 3 steps. Great painting btw...

One of my favourite places is St Catherine’s Hill in Winchester. I always feel like I’m going to die by the time I get to the top but it’s peaceful up there with great views I remember watching Ghostwatch as a kid in the early 90’s. That scared the crap out of me.

The scariest movie from when I was a kid was Salem's Lot, I couldn't make it through that in one sitting. As for the best place I've visited, it'd have to be the Grand Canyon. It is awe inspiring and no photo or video will ever do it justice. The hikes in and around the canyon are amazing.

Hi Marek! my favourite place in the world is Eilean Shona off the west coast of Scotland. It is peaceful and wild and I love it. As a child I got so scared of an episode of Scooby Doo that I refused to go upstairs by myself for about six months. Great video as always!

Danger Mouse bouncing his car on the edge of the universe scared me deeply. I really wasn't ready to consider a finite universe at that time. Smallcombe Vale is my favourite spot. It's a little valley tucked behind Bath. I looked down from above at a kestrel hovering and the grass shimmering and was gobsmacked by the beauty of the world.

Splendid walk again, Marek. In terms of scary 80s TV, I remember being terrified of The Boy from Space, which may be a little before your time. Also there was a series called Maelstrom that wasn't for kids, but somehow I managed to watch it and that was bloody scary. Although having watched some clips of it now it looks a bit naff, but the theme song still sends shivers down the spine..

Medieval pilgrimage you say?? Hmm, most interesting. Anyway, the scariest books we had in the states as a kid was a series called "Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark" The stories themselves weren't that scary but the black and white illustrations in the books were horrifying. They adapted it into a feature film a few years ago that Guillermo Del Toro produced. Also, we had a TV show called "Are you Afraid of The Dark?" which was actually made in Canada but played on Nickelodeon and it had some very freaky, memorable eps. Not sure if any of that stuff made it across the Atlantic.

Another fine walk. My favourite place is St Ives, many a childhood holiday there with my family and Aunt, Uncle and cousins. Great memories. As a young child I was scared by a Jack in the box which made the most awful noise, pushing it down made it scream that used to terrify me.

When I lived in Ryde, down the road by the park.. was a track that ran by the railway line, apparently the 'Mars Bar' man hid in the bushes trying to lure in kids.. pretty scared of him growing up lol, he probably wasn't even real 🤔 I swear I saw the boogie man hiding in the linen closet too. Loved reading those books too. Honestly love watching your videos, you bring up so many memories of childhood + I get to see the I.O.W Moved to Wales when I was 14.. 41 now 😅 ..but you give me the chance to experience the I.O.W again, think a trip back is long overdue. Still, Wales is extremely beautiful too, just alot more hilly 🤣 I live in the black mountain range, stunning views if you have the energy to climb one 😀

Hey Marek, another great walk. Really enjoyed watching that one. 😃👍 Some lovely scenery on that walk. My favourite place is 'The Isle of Wight' hence me watching your channel. Other places are Snowdonia in Wales which is breathtakingly beautiful. We stay near there, specifically a tourist destination called Barmouth. Anglesey is very beautiful. We also love Loch Lomond in Scotland. Also Looe in Cornwall is a favourite. When I was a kid, I had an irrational fear of those creeping garden weeds that wrap around lamp posts etc. Always thought they would wrap around my legs when I was asleep at night. Even though my bedroom wasn't anywhere near our garden ! Strange ! 🥴🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍 Stay cool fella ! 😃👍

Lovely use of Peer Gynt at the beginning of this brilliant video. That composition always reminds me of Ren & Stimpy. And it always a pleasure to see a bit of “Yarnbombing” on street furniture too. My fave local walk is the Itchen Way, best bit is Winchester to Bishopstoke (stopping at Steam Town Brewery for a beer and a burger) and my dream walk would be along the Cinque Terre coastal route in Italy PS when I was little I was scared of UFOs as I used to watch to many reruns of 50s and 60s sci-fi b-movies on BBC2

Favorite place: there is a small mountain named Lilienstein in an area called Saxon Switzerland near Dresden, Germany. It looks similar to the mountain the aliens landed on in encounter of the third kind. You can walk up it, enjoy the views from the top and even have a nice meal in a beer garden up there. June and September are the best months to go for a Brit. Too hot after June, too cold after September.

The Hill o Many Stanes in Caithness. It's a hillside that's covered with little standing stones arranged in a sort of radial pattern of rows. Anywhere with standing stones always calms me down. Similar if you're up there is The Ring o Brodgar on Orkney; it's absolutely huge.

Mysteriously my comments have disappeared overnight! Now that IS scary and a bit odd 👀 Can't remember what I said, but it was along the lines of TIntagel Castle being one of my fave places especially on a stormy day ⚡ up high on the cliffs with no one else around. But of course the IOW is my go to place & strangely my favourite spot is a lonely little bench 🪑in the corner of Rhylstone Gardens overlooking Luccombe Chine with an Elvis tribute plaque nearby. Random. You can contemplate and chill. Check it out!! Huffed and puffed my way up to Pepper Pot once from Blackgang Chine. Amazing views. Oh, yeah the other thing I mentioned was that it was good to see you again in ''Am I being Unreasonable'' on TV at the mo! I revisited an episode on here not long ago, and there was a scene where the kid gets abducted and when the police were telling the family he'd been found they casually mention it looks like he's been given some injections but he's alright. The way they just brush over this mortifying piece of info like it's nothing... your child has been abducted and injected with some stuff but apart from that nothing to worry about.

My favourite place is ‘Sad Hill Cemetery’ in northern Spain, the location of the final scene in ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ set in a beautiful landscape that has barely changed in the past 50 years.

The ‘boggart’ terrified me…….people we would meet up with every year on holiday at Adgestone told me about it after I had heard snuffling round the tent one night they told me it was a boggart, a vicious half badger half hedgehog creature only found on the island. I believed it for years 😂

The scariest thing about that video was the fact I didn't know Shorwell was pronounced Shorrell. No strawberry laces for me. Like the lighthouse guy, I have sought to atone for my sins. In my case I bought a membership to your excellent channel. (Member #367 in old money). Once of my favourite places is Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire. Older viewers may recognise it as the villain's lair in the excellent 1984 BBC adaptation of The Box of Delights. It also doubled as the home of Sir John Gielgud's Canterville Ghost (1986).

I watched a Greek mythology thing on tv when I was young, and Medusa scared the sh1t outta me. Convinced that she was under my bed and her snakes were gonna burst thru the mattress or grab my ankles. Also saw a kate bush music video with a ghosty monster type deal in it, who then moved in alongside Medusa under my bed and terrified the life outta me. Freddie Kruger (who’s pic I saw in the tv times!) was under there for a bit as well. Under my bed was THE monster hang-out back in the early nineties. Good times. 😬

Alas my favorite place in the world that I've been to is called the Trent Canal in Ontario, Canada but that is because of all the good memories I made there growing up with people who are no longer with us. My favourite place is Highcliffe Castle, Dorset. I’m most afraid of flying although I will do short flight with calming medication. I would love to go to America but worry I’ll get the overwhelming urge to try and open the aircraft door which is apparently very common in those with a fear of flying. 😮😮😮

'Usborne Guide to the Supernatural World' was a huge hit among us Finnish school kids who were born in the beginning of the 80's. The stories were fascinating and frightening as such, but the detailed illustrations made them ten times more horrifying. For years, I absolutely refused to use those clattering, old-fashioned cage style lifts, and they still make me feel uncomfortable. That is because in that book there was a story about a man who saw a ghost carrying a coffin. Years later he saw that same man in blood and flesh, working as a lift operator, and refused to step inside. You probably can guess what happened next... 👻

One of my fears is talking about my fears. Talking about them means they gain power and become real. It’s like pointing out you have a gross zit. Then everyone has to looked at the said zit and say “it’s not that bad”. If you say nothing we can all live in blissful ignorance and not look at the zit. So many places I love that you should visit but it would involve you leaving the Isle of White. Do you do that? These days I’m happy about sitting on a quiet bench looking at something pretty. You are welcome to come join me one day as long as you bring strawberry laces and a bushranger story.

When I was in early primary school in the mid 1980's the tv was wheeled in for us to watch a horrific children's program, all I can remember was a little girl approaching a hut on a beach which had a witch in it and either the girl and/or the witch got trapped inside and (maybe set on fire?) whoever it was was so terrified to get out of the hut that their fingers were bleeding from desperately scratching at the door. The atmosphere of the whole program was horrible and frightening in that 1980s no filter, low production filming style which made it feel very real. Ive never understood what it was or seen it again. Definitely scarred for life!

Scarred for Life is brilliant, just watching some of the stuff they used to show us as kids explains a lot! Two of my favourite walking places ever would be Ingleton Waterfalls trail and Hardcastle Crags in Hebden Bridge.

I did not know about the Ingleton Waterfalls. I have just looked at pictures of it on google very nice. I don't know why the sound of rushing water is so soothing. Maybe it has something to do with a hot bath.
