I grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin, where these beautiful trucks are built. They converted the old outdoor theatre to make a huge manufacturing facility. Truly awesome. Pierce trucks are some of the best.

You’re talking about the people who are away from their family and home for 24 hours at a time literally putting their lives on the line for ungrateful shits like you. It’s funny because most fire trucks that are being retired now go for $3,000-$10,000 . Quite amazing you can purchase a formerly $500,000 truck for so cheap. I already own a retired police car with almost all of the original equipment, yet the inner child in me still wants a fire truck, lol!

I had the chance to tour the Pierce plant in Appleton, Wi while our truck was in production. Amazing to see trucks from all over the world in various stages of production while walking through the plant. The power stroke is offered on their contender series. They are more of an affordable cookie cutter line. The chassis and cab is built in Appleton and shipped to Bradenton, Fl for the body to be manufactured. All of the bigger more full customized trucks built completely in Appleton.

Very good video here. I do have one correction though, we do not carry oxygen tanks on our backs for breathing. We carry compressed air. Oxygen is an oxidizer and would be detrimental if a leak occurs.

I don't care what you're given trade is, that's just a gorgeous life-saving machine! I love that rotoray, all the light and signals! He mentions "It's your hot rod", in reference to spec and build...and that's a true statement in regards to EVO trucks. As much as you might "hustle" any good hard-working commercial truck, emergency vehicles are truly expected to "make-haste", at least on every outgoing they make...and that takes a pretty hot rig, to stand up to that kind of a service life.

Hey Thanks for this video, I'm a longtime subscriber and also a Retired Phoenix Firefighter/ Engineer/ Pump operator. I,drove The streets of Phoenix for 30 years . My department PFD had a fleet of Ambulances that had The 6.0 and they were very problematic for years. But I also have a 2005 F350 dually with The 6.0,and knowing what i do now about that motor, it's no wonder that we had so many issues with reliability, as we were constantly having problems getting them in for service, oil changes especially and i think for the most part they were running the same oil as we were putting into our large Pumpers as the truck that was featured in this video. Straight 30 wt. I,really enjoyed this episode. I,was around when we started using all of the things featured on that Rig so i was part of the evolution of the CAF System and when you see a Fire on the news where it looks like shaving cream or a Foam Rave Party, That is from the Foam being used to help smother The fire. Thanks again for all if The Time you take to keep us informed. I'm also The owner of a 32 ft. 5th wheel ArcticFox.

Where is that big Hill ? Appleton is 780 feet above sea level. DD13's are made in different locations around the globe, with connecting rods from DDC's plant in Redford, Mich., heads from the Mercedes-Benz foundry in Mannheim, Germany, and block castings from the foundry in South Africa. Still a good Motor. If we( F.D) could get that DPF system off motor. Short trips force us to run a DPF cleaning cycle at station.

On these trucks the bigger the motor the better. The motors are used for more than just moving the thing down the road, but also stopping the trucks. These trucks keep getting heavier and heavier and you need all the help you can get to keep the brakes from over heating

This past weekend was the FDIC (Fire Department Instructors Conference) in Indianapolis. They had dozens and dozens and dozens of trucks like this and even "cooler" than this one appears. The fact that it has a Detroit Diesel isn't a surprise. The EPA has basically made it so that what once could be ordered with ANY power plant you wanted is now only available with 2, maybe 3 engine choices. DD13 and a few Cummins choices is it. PS: I know people like the roto-ray revolving light because of all the nostalgia involved...BUT it's a $2000 waste of taxpayer dollars. It's a USELESS light that does a terrible job at warning traffic. That's why they quit using them years ago and only came back because want to be "cool". The Federal Q siren is justified. There's nothing better to clear traffic. The bell....is for parades. Probably a $600,000 pumper truck or more. That'll need replaced in 10 years. A basic and capable pumper is $350,000. Eventually the taxpayers will not fund this type of stuff. Nice truck however. I do like it. Don't get me wrong.

Well, since I work at Pierce, in Appleton, I probably worked on that exact truck.....the Velocity is my personal favorite platform, but I am unaware of the Ford 6.7 availability in them. I worked on a Saber Enforcer 6.7 about a year ago when they prototyped the first couple, but have not seen any more built, on my watch anyway. I see reps from Siddons- Martin come through the plant with customers on a daily basis. The engines I see most in a Velocity/Impel tend to be a Detroit, with the Saber/ Enforcer usually a Cummins, but many Detroits in them also. The exhaust aftertreatment on new trucks is, well, insane. I would be curious about the life and replacement costs involved with the various devices. Now, if you could profile Pierce's parent company Oshkosh and see some rigs THEY build,.........!

Sadly the Detroit Diesel engine company we grew up with and that I still have in my semi-truck on it's second life since rebuild has not existed since 2010. The engine in this fire truck is actually a 12.8L Mercedes-Benz MBE-4000 series rebranded Detroit Diesel DD13. DaimlerChrysler, ceased making Series 60 engines in 2010 and rebranded the MBE-4000 as the new Detroit Diesel. Therefore, the DD13, DD15, and DD16 are not true Detroit Diesel engines and I will not drive a truck with this engine nor own a truck with this engine. My truck has its original Detroit Diesel Series 60, 12.7L non-egr, now at 1.2 million miles on its second life and runs like new and still delivers incredible fuel mileage. I have one of the very last 12.7L non-egr engines ever built in July 2002. As long as parts are available, I will continue rebuilding what I have when needed.

Timmy Meyer , Some departments, such as Chicago, have tried European or UK style trucks. They have been received with both praise and condemnation. There are positives and negatives to each size truck. I remember when the idea of using large ATVs as rapid response vehicles was considered ridiculous, but now they have found a useful niche in some departments. USofA fire departments aren't automatically opposed to size change, but once you spend the money it's gone, so you have to be careful with how much of your limited budget and staffing goes for experimental equipment operations.

I see, when I was typing this i was thinking about narrow UK streets, but with the larger and wider American streets, vehicles can afford to be larger

Shark Shooter I'm from Germany and although the lanes on our Autobahn are wider than those of US interstates, the fire departments usually purchase fire apparatus which are more compact simply due to the fact that they have to operate in narrow roads in e.g. historic city centers and residential streets as well. Some American apparatus, even sth likea Tower Ladder, would never ever manage to get around some turns in 2000 year old city centers, where even some of our departments operate Tower Ladders with all-wheel steering. Although the average fire apparatus is more compact over here in Europe (and some of them probably being the most compact fire "trucks"), we also operate some of the largest fire trucks, larger than those in the USA. To name just a few: 300' to 367' high Aerial Platforms, Truck Cranes, Buses (besides the "normal" ones which are used at some places in the US as well: articulated buses, double-deck buses), tanks and even trains The fire departments from US army bases over here used to have American apparatus, but today they changed most of their apparatus against some modern European ones to be more effective (costs, tactics etc)

I'm guessing north of 600 thousand $. My old department had a saying that I am sure is true today. "You fight fire with dollars, not water.

You know that cops are here so that firemen can have heroes, right? Just had to throw that one out there. Firemen definitely have cooler vehicles though.

There is no 12V72. It could be a 12V71 or a 8V92. But, there is no such thing as a Detroit Diesel with 72 cubic inches per cylinder.
