I think for how cheap it is, defiantly works well, for something a bit more permanent in the workshop you could get a sheet of something like FR4 pcb material or aluminium to mount it down to so it doesn't wiggle as much. Then just drape a piece of welding curtain over it, after 15 years in a past life working with high powered telco lasers they're not something to take chances with and fairly much the same as arc welders for eye damage. With your leather working skills I can see this being a huge help, plus just for engraving a signature onto a knife its a heck of a lot better than stamps, etching or messing around with other methods

You’ve sent me down a rabbit hole with this lol It seems they have an air assist option that may make it easier to cleanly cut materials. So you could probably cut out sheaths and engrave them at the same time. I am getting this laser pretty damn soon now.

I don't think there's any right or wrong with lasers. If it looks good then you're doing it right. Safety first. Yes the fumes can be toxic. You might want to put a fan in there or something. It all depends on what you're burning. Even chromium sometimes found in steel is probably not too healthful to breathe it. Or just wear a mask. Pretty much same rules as when working with epoxy. You have to be careful with your eyes. Do Wear your glasses. It's always possible you can get a laser reflection especially off metal. If you're running the laser unattended, make sure there's nothing flammable anywhere near it. If you want to run the pattern multiple times on the same piece of material, then consider locking the material down using a clamp. It looks like you're really having a lot of fun. I enjoy watching the videos.
