@@MCsCreations ok, then I know a little more. But You are right they are incredible animal. The sad thing is that the live for just 2 to 3 years in the wild, but are smarter than a lot of people. I saw a documentary about OPs and they had one in a tank of water on the deck of the ship, when no one was looking it left the fish tank and went on to find the opening on the side of the boat where water is leaving the deck in rough seas, and dived in. A fish just flaps around until it dies or has the fortune to get back in the water by chance. In the Mediterranean they catch OPs by having small jars connected by a line, drop them to the bottom, the OPs looking for shelter sees those and make them their last home, next day the fisherman in a quick motion brings the jars to the surface and the OPs do not escape. It is in a way that they catch small monkeys, the take a calebass (dried hollow pumpkin) makes a holes a very tiny for the string to attach it to a stake or tree, and a bigger for the monkey to just gets it's open hand in, then they insert a peanut or anything the monkey likes but it must be hard, the monkey reaches in, grips the peanut to take it out, but now the fist is bigger than the hole, and the monkey refuses to release its price. It ends up in 2 ways, as dinner or in chains as a pet.

Love the knife. The sharp edges I didnt think I would like, but I do. Handle graphics def get high marks. The laser... its waaay above my head but I can see where it could be useful in lots of projects. Once you get a process down, you're golden. The makers mark is crisper and deeper and the trade off is time spent doing it. In that aspect; still well worth it. I like it, I'm still sticking to my elecrtro-etch, but I like it.

Thanks for doing this research and sharing your results. Seems like the comment about using it to put patterns on steel to then be deepened with gravers is a really good idea, but I'm not sure I'd want to do anything else with it. Between the time it takes to figure out settings, and the burning that needs to be dealt with, I think I'd be faster doing it by hand. Those fish scales, on the other hand, are making me think.
@Joe_Bandit

You only have to figure out the settings once though. I am using mine quite a bit for all kinds of things - cutting templates, scribing through dykem, etching a resist for a makers mark.

My initial thoughts on the use of lasers + metal would be to template out things like a very high definition stencil onto the surface and then going in with a graver to do the more detailed aspects of engraving. That sort of stuff if you're paying someone by the hour for engraving is extremely expensive because it requires both a lot of talent, time and patience. Not that I think you could get away with matching a high end engravers finished results but you might get a lot closer than just destroying a lot of really otherwise good bolsters, guards and pommels! (until you git gud) But t really depends on the patterns I think, could be some value-added component to a knife/sword that sets it above a plainer example, sort of like how the German and UK cutlers of ye olde days used to do acid etching and other relief kind of work when selling off production knives for export.

Very nice and seems like it can do a lot with it, but the question to you is that which do you enjoy doing more? The automated system, where you just put in numbers on the computer or the hand finished one? Really, both methods produce beautiful results, but personally I enjoy your hand crafted ones more. Some of the imperfections add to the quality of it. With that said, I'd probably go automated with my own stuff. I have a tendency to scrutinize my own work being a painter.

Cool, will You try to make handle in different materials? The outer edge one material and filling the hole with another. And so on. Glue them to a thin base but having the holes made by the machine they will fit perfect on the knife and by using different thickness on every material You would reduce the time to form the handle, and maybe save some on the material. It will be like laminating but not in depth. I hope I make sense?

I’ve been looking for a nice example of laser engraving on steel for a while now and came across this. Nice work. I have a question about laser vs etching. Laser looks good but slow, etching fast but less precise, but I wonder if you have tried a painted steel that you use the laser to just create the mask in the paint and then follow up with the etching. Might you get the best of both and taking the paint off at the end would be very quick?

Unfortunately it costs way more than that in pounds sterling (over twice that) so I couldn't justify the cost but it certainly gives a fantastic effect and is way faster than I could engrave but not so sure about the heat treatment problem, some lasers will cut through coolant maybe this one would do the same. Until then its back to the dremel,hand chisels or air tooling

Man, I just bought a 5.5 watt a few months ago. The design and cable management is the nicest I’ve seen on laser engravers in the sub $500 range. The problem with it is it only marks the steel, doesn’t etch it. Now I see this one and just bought it lol. Now I have to learn how to use Laser GRBL lol. Are you available to help with that @greenbeetle?

5.5 watts should engrave steel it just takes a very long time. In the 5 watt laser I tested it took over 4 hours to put a reasonable makers mark on metal. Not very practical. Laser grbl isn’t too hard I can try to give you some pointers.

@@GreenBeetle the best I can get with that engraver is an oxide mark, it still looks really good, but there is no depth to it. A set with a high optical density and rated for the wavelength of light that your laser is using should only cost around $50. You only have 1 set of eyes, dont just trust the set they toss in the box.

There's a pretty cool process called surface laser remelting that remelts the surface of the steel, which is rapidly cooled by the bulk of the material, resulting in very fine grain and high hardness. It's been accomplished with lasers as low as 30W. I think it'd be really fun to try on a knife with a chisel grind or asymmetric edge (the depth is fairly small), and it seems like there'd be particular potential on cheap D2, which should be expected to have a coarse structure and sometimes low hardness.
