COOMBE ABBEY built in 1150 Home to the Craven Family with links to James 1st and Princess Elizabeth

We spend a wonderful night in the beautiful and Atmospheric Coombe Abbey, sleeping in one of the oldest rooms in the mansion... the house dates back to 1150 and was home to the Craven Family and also Princess Elizabeth daughter of James the 1st who spent a year here while being educated... there was also a kidnap attempt by the gunpowder platters to take her!

@TheBlokesFromStoke Thanks Guys! We really want to go again... it was a cheeky impromptu night away so it would be nice to stay without having to "rush off" in the morning. We were a little unsettled by Brother Gilbert "sleeping" in the hallway near our room but he was no trouble lol 😆 x

Hello Neil and Ant, that was some place to stay. Beautiful bedroom but I think I'd have struggled to sleep 😴 much imagination would have run wild. Loved the leaded glass windows and courtyard view is so spectacular. It cracked me up that the exquisite bookcase mystery door led to just an ugly old bathroom... that was funny. When you showed the coffin of the monk that was murdered in the house that was no surprise to me. The house seems to command secrecy, intrigue and suspense! I'd love to go there someday. Thank you!

Thankyou... we both love historic houses and we've figured the only way to "fully" experience them is to stay in them, Ants been checking out some of the better ones near-ish to us that are now hotels and we thought it would be nice to spend the night in a few! The four poster bed looks fab Aperol Spritz I think is the tipple (my favourite) Morgs would love the steak and ale pie too but it would have to be Gluten free. Hi Neil and Ant hope you have had a lovely weekend. Isnt this such a super place it really looks amazing what a place to spend the night. We love a place with lots of little nooks and crannies. Daves favourite is a steak and ale pie. The bedrooms are wonderful very opulent, how lovely to be given a tour. That lantern was so big I for one wouldnt fancy having to change the bulb 😆 Wow the four poster was so romantic 😍. It looked like you had the hotel all to yourselves. We love it . Hi Dave and Dawn! Thanks for watching... We think there was only 4 other guests that night so we wandered around without seeing anyone apart from at dinner and again at breakfast🌙 The place is SO big we really were so surprised by how many rooms there are... we think the gardens must look beautiful in summer ☀️ It was odd knowing there is a Monk in his casket just along the corridor from the bedroom but he was no trouble at all ! Thanks for another great tour ! That place is amazing and so atmospheric. What an experience to be able to stay there. Would love to stay for a week spending a night in all the various rooms available. Love the secret entryway into the bathroom. So handy as one can select a book on way into the bath....the highchairs in the dining room add a whimsical touch ..... one imagines adorable little dogs of the household sitting in them at table. Those are substantial breakfasts ! Easy on the butter as we need you to be doing lovely tours for us for a very very long time. So happy for you guys !

Hey :) I am fascinated by how many mansions, palaces, royal country houses are there in UK.. Is there a rough number or an official list? Secondly, one thing they all have in common are huge parks around them - how did they build on that type of soil buildings? I live in Germany and there are also countless palaces here.. Gotha, Weimar.. amazing

@igorperic5232 Hi Igor! Great question... we believe there are over 3000 stately homes in the UK, many open to visitors so we've a long way to go yet in seeing them all! They always built them with large parkland spaces around them primarily to create seclusion and total privacy... the settings are an important part of the over all construction. In England there is a saying relating to historic houses... "splendid isolation" which is just what the owners wanted. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment.
