I always replaced the belt, (standard), first. That black on the q-tip happens because as the belt ages it drys out and the rubber "ozones", as well as the pinch roller caked with iron oxides from countless playing.

I agree, if the belt had slightly stretched I would have changed it, but as the deck was in permanent play mode it fooled me into thinking it was a belt issue. Once resolved the bent PB head, cassettes would load properly and all was well.

I saw a video by Future Sound System showcasing a tape echo modification for this Coomber. Do you know how to do a modification like that? Would be amazing to see.

I have one of these recently acquired and it won't play certain tapes I have the Spanish learning tapes that came with it play ok but other tapes I have don't want to play ? The tape deck just stops

Maybe the tapes are wound too tightly and the autostop is kicking in. Maybe loosen the tapes using a pencil. Check the clutch / brake assemblies

@@ChasLarge thanks very much it's the only tape that won't work after trying a few maybe it's the tape but it works in my Technics deck 🤷
