TRANSCRIPT:
Hi. I’m Denise. Thank you for watching my video. Today I’m going to talk about how to write numbers in English. So, to start with single digits, I’ll start with the zero. We just start at the top and make an oval shape. Okay? The number one is just a straight line starting at the top and going down, just a straight line. Notice that this may be different from the way you make a number one in your country or in your language. In some countries the number one is made with a little cap or a top on it something like that, but in the United States, we don’t write it that way. If somebody were to write a number one like this, an American would probably think that this is the number seven. So in the United States, we don’t make our number one like that. We just make a straight line. Now the number two starts about here in the upper part of the line. We loop around, go down on a slant, and then make a straight line on the bottom. The number three starts up in the upper part of the line and then we make two loops. That’s number three. The number four starts at the top, goes down and across at the middle, and then lift the pen, go back to the top and come straight down. Notice that I left part of my horizontal line over here. This vertical line does not go right to the end. Now this, too, is different from the way people in some countries make a number four. In some places, the number four looks like this with a point. And we would recognize that as a number four, but we usually would write the number four this way without a point at the top. So we don’t put this point up here. The number five starts at the top, goes down to the middle. Then we make a curved part to the right, lift the pen, go back to the top, and go across. That’s number five. Number six starts at the top, goes around to the bottom, makes a loop. Number seven starts at the top, goes across, and down on a slant. Remember I said that we do not make our number one like this because then it may look like a number seven and I hope that you see the similarity. In some countries, the number seven has a line across the middle. In the United States, we don’t usually make our number seven that way. The number eight starts at the top, we make a loop, and around, and then we go back up to the top. Usually the top just goes straight up. The number nine is a loop at the top and straight down. This is different from the way the nine is made in some other countries also because in some places the number nine curves at the bottom like that. But in the United States, we don’t usually, well, we never make the nine like that. Okay? So this is how we make single digits.
To write two and three digit numbers, we just write the digits next to each other without any other symbols between. I’m sure that’s the way you write your numbers, too. So we write number ten, for example, just the one and the zero next to ...

thanks again for your admonition only one remark the continental european 7 with the line in the middle is recognizable by Americans, the number one should look like a capital I but 7 even with the line in the middle is accepted, thank you

Sometimes the 3 has a flat top, resembling the Ʒ (ezh), so it it could prevent people from falsely turning a 3 into an 8.

And I usually make my 1s with a small hook in the top (but not too large) and a bar on the bottom, as it might look too similar to the lowercase l or the capital I.

0:33 - that's just not 1 for me 😀 I actually thought that 4 down there at 2:12 is how Americans are writting it, because in Europe we do it as you show for American writting, only 6 years old kids do 4 like down because they see it printed so they repeat that, I remember this when I was at 1st grade of elementary. Except 1 and 7, we make numbers completely same as americans here in Czech Republic, most of people cross 7, but not all of them, 9 is mostly same as American. When you writte 7 without cross, you should be careful about making horizontal line always really horizontal, it can easily look like European 1, we mostly don't do it was line in handwritting, it mostly curved, this what you showed is more like technical script which we had to use at technical school. Using some commas on points after 000 was always so confusing for me, we do just empty space there, like 1 000 000 000. When I see 1,000.37, my brain wants to explode, I have no idea what number is that without explanation becuase as you said, some countries use points and some commas, so you always need to know where is that person from, that's why I prefer our way with just space and comma for decimal numbers, but we don't mostly do space when it's only 1000.
