Hi! As per my knowledge, I think you have messed up with the phonemes. e.g. Cut / kʌt/ about /əˈbaʊt /
@Coopos7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Actually I have not messed up the phonemes, but I understand that I have confused some people. I say in the beginning of the video that /ʌ/ is used for stressed syllables and /ə/ is used for unstressed syllables. I decided to use only /ə/ because I thought it would be simpler to use only one symbol. I explained this in the video. I realize now that this was confusing. The symbols at the top of the board on the left are not intended to be different column headings. Only the /ə/ is the column heading. The /ʌ/ was just extra information. Please notice my explanations at the following time marks: 0:30 /ə/ is for unstressed, /ʌ/ is for stressed 3:38 /ə/ is unstressed 4:01 /ʌ/ is for stressed as in cut 4:39 /ə/ is the first sound in about I apologize for the confusion.

Yeah, it was a bit confusing... I thought I'd misunderstood everything wrt. schwa up til now, until I went to the Cambridge dictionary to check. On the other hand.... Unless it's a dialect issue, I'm pretty sure I've mis-pronounced every word in the right hand column until now as /ɒ/ and not /ɑ/ ps ... oh ... it said "american" .... sorry...

@@UCZqybG3PUnvd0ZVOHHUFWbA /ʌ/ is mostly used in British dictionaries, and it's used mostly for historical reasons. Nowadays whenever you see /ʌ/ in a dictionary, it denotes [ɐ] in modern RP or [ɜ] in General American. Because [ɜ] is very close to [ə] and its distribution is complementary to [ə] (i.e. stressed vs unstressed syllables), both sounds are considered as the same phoneme in American English. For more information about sounds, please, take a look at the IPA chat: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPA_vowel_chart_with_audio

question, is it possible to use schwa sound for words that should have /a/ sound? is that valid?? for instance, i dont know the pronunciation of the word or i am speaking fast?
@Coopos4 жыл бұрын
You don't have to be perfect. 😊 If you don't know the pronunciation or you are speaking fast, yes, you can substitute. If two words have similar pronunciations like 'not' and 'nut' a listener might be confused. Usually, though, a listener understands from the context.

@Coopos8 жыл бұрын
To the person who asked if /ɑ/ is a back vowel, I am not able to reply to your comment. Can you check your KZbin settings to allow me to reply? Anyway, here is my answer. Yes, many linguists classify /ɑ/ as a back vowel, but there are others who classify it as central. It is shown as a back vowel in the IPA vowel chart. In my vowel overview video, I decided to put it between central and back. Since it is unrounded, I didn’t want to put it with the rounded vowels. For this video, I wanted to be consistent with my overview video. I should have explained that /ɑ/ is a back vowel in the IPA chart. I’m sorry if this was confusing. You’re pretty sharp to have noticed this! /a/ is a front vowel and /ɑ/ is central-back. They are both low unrounded vowels. /a/ does not directly correspond to one vowel sound. Thanks for watching!

Bonjour. S'il vous plaît voir ma réponse au premier commentaire épinglé. J'ai décidé d'utiliser uniquement /ə/ parce que je pensais qu'il serait plus simple d'utiliser un seul symbole. Malheureusement, cela a dérouté certaines personnes. Voici la première partie de mon commentaire, mais il y a plus. Veuillez le lire si vous êtes intéressé. Merci d'avoir regardé! De plus, les autres commentaires sont intéressants. I say in the beginning of the video that /ʌ/ is used for stressed syllables and /ə/ is used for unstressed syllables. I decided to use only /ə/ because I thought it would be simpler to use only one symbol. I explained this in the video. I realize now that this was confusing.

In American English the Schwa is being pronounced as a [ ʌ ]. This happens in all General American varieties. The British English Schwa is more like the German, French or Dutch Schwa. The words 'Sir' and 'Word' have a long Schwa in British English. Thus = in American English the words 'cut, about, word' have all a [ ʌ ]-like Schwa, which is a feature of General American standard language usage.

You do well in pronouncing..but can we know if there's rules to pronounce O in some as a because letter e comes at the end of word and that makes long sound..I hope you clarify that for me. Thanks a lot for You.
@Coopos6 жыл бұрын
This would make a good video. I will put that on my list of videos to make. In general, if there is a silent e at the end of a word, then the first vowel 'says its name.' This means the first vowel is pronounced in the same way that we say the name of the letter. So, 'o' in 'hope' sounds like the name of letter 'o.' But, 'o' in 'hop' does not sound like letter 'o' because there is not an 'e' at the end of the word. This works for other vowels, too. 'A' in 'cape' sounds like the name of the letter 'a', but 'a' in 'cap' does not.
