Orlando pilot here...Florida gets a lot of pop-up thunderstorms and sea-breeze storms on the peninsula from the east and west coast breezes colliding in the middle of the state. Any of these storms, or even developing future storms, can develop an outflow or inflow straight-line wind that can extend 20+ miles from the actual storm. If the outflow is onshore and blows out to sea and you fly into it, you would experience exactly what you described. As for the cops, when they pull crap like this, demand a supervisor come to the scene. In Florida, they must call for a supervisor if you demand one. 9/10 the supervisor will end a tyrant cops attack on your rights. That 10th time, find an attorney and hold them accountable. He can’t arrest you, unless he says “no flying” and then bans you, and you subsequently come back and fly anyway. I would be willing to bet this is how the behind-the-scenes conversation went, though: Park manager calls the Chief of Police and blesses him out about “those dang flyboys in the park yet again! why won’t you stop them!” Then the police chief calls the lieutenant and says “get your officers down there and get the flying guys out of the park.” Crap rolls downhill and that beat cop catches it all, so he’s pissed before he arrives knowing it’s a BS call. All he wants to do is go catch some underage drinkers or something on the beach, but he’s getting fussed at about “these same guys that are always in the park.” That’s how that sort of stuff happens…

Sea breeze convergence. It's great for paragliders, you can fly for miles in it. Normally dense cold air from the sea meets warm metro air from the land. The warm air lifts over the cold dense air sometimes to 3000+ft. The position this happens is down to the relative strengths of the winds. There I come from in southern UK you can take-off and the Sea breeze convergence pops thermals as it tracks in-land as the breeze progresses, great for XC's. It is a bit unpredictable and can occur at the breach especially if the winds are not opposing. The air as with most convergence is maybe quite turbulent. I have been in convergence in France in the evening (Saint-Vincent-les-Forts) from 2000m where the only way down was to spiral down hard only to be lifted back up from 300ft to do more spiralling to a round 100ft.

You encountered a ‘shear’ of convergent winds colliding and creating unstable lifting air. Flying coastal sites in a hang glider - we actively seek those shears. They take us well above ridge lift. They can be seen on the wave tops (look for lines of white where the winds are lining up the crests). Shears don’t always have to be on-shore, off-shore direction, they can be aligned differently. Typically created by stronger flows of air moving into more stagnant airflow. They don’t happen regularly but sometimes can be predicted when there is little to no wind on the coast, then a rather quick freshening of wind coming on-shore (again, looking for those wave crests well off-shore).

There is another dynamic at play here: there is a tremendous concentration of influential and wealthy people in a narrow radius within the surrounding areas of Miami: Key Biscayne, Fisher Island, Star/Palm/Hibiscus Islands, Miami Beach, all the way to the north (Indian Creek, North Bay, etc). People who are overly paranoid about security or noise are likely putting pressure on local police regarding paramotors. Of course, it doesn't make any of it wrong or illegal, that's the point of public spaces, but I wouldn't be surprised if that cop is just caught in the middle.
@kevinbrand79926 ай бұрын
A couple of things regarding the LEO contact. The SCOTUS (Supreme Courte of the United States) has ruled that law enforcement may be dishonest with members of the public in pursuit of their goals, whatever they may be. In this case, the cop "threatening" to place you in a cage and take your freedom away from you was a bold faced lie in order to get you to do what he wanted you to do (and completely within the law and his authority). They do this all the time and it is indeed very slimy of them to be this way. Basically, if a cop is talking to you and saying things like "you can't be here, you need to leave, you will be arrested if you don't leave," etc, they are most likely not being truthful. They can tell you that this is private property and you are trespassing and you're about to get arrested for it when NONE OF THAT IS TRUE (for example you're standing in a public park). Most LEOs are on power trips their entire shift...every day. Stay safe out there and NEVER answer questions from a LEO...if they are talking to you, they are trying to find something to charge you with.

Your understanding of Frazier v. Cupp, I assume this is the SCOTUS case you are referring to, is not fully correct. Cops can lie about the facts of a criminal act. Such as "hey this guy says you pulled a gun on him" or " we have you on video smashing this car's window". They cannot lie as to the law itself. So they can't say this act is legal, tell you do such act, and then arrest you for doing such act, or detain, threaten to arrest you, unless they have the lawful authority to do so. Which would be dictated by the actual facts involved, rising to some level of criminal action(reasonable suspicion and/or probable cause). Not to say they won't do this. Most cops have a very poor education in regards to what the law actually is. But this is where the courts get to educate them.

For your header elbow to form oxides in colors, it depends on the header materials and exhaust gas temps. Higher temps (running lean or higher rpm without cooling) cause oxides to form at different rates when reacting with various atmospheric gasses. You could try leaning the motor out slightly and/or running without prop. I imagine the prop pulls enough air over the elbow to provide some decent cooling.

YES Prior Restraint is a Rights violation. They make a threat of arrest for something you're allowed to do or protected in doing like speech or recording in public. Also there's other Rights violations like detaining you without lawful authority. For example they're REQUIRED by law to have a law or ordinance violation BEFORE they detain you. They need a reason more than just cuz they want to detain you. Or they force you to identify when you aren't actually required. But they say they will arrest you if you don't identify. That would be a 4th Amend violation. I just made a vid describing Officer Suspicion requirements explained from a Federal Judge Also if you FEEL detained or a reasonable person would feel detained. Like cop says come talk to me...that most would consider detained. BUT VERIFY by asking...the smarter ones will try to deny answering. But state if I'm not detained then I'm going this way over here. The cop will make it known real quick. But they're trained to always ask first...most will phrase it as a request cuz it works in their favor if it goes sideways.

There are always wind boundaries converging at where land masses meet large bodies of water. While they do their own mesoscale thing, they get impacted by more synoptic weather systems. As you probably know, the afternoon onshore breeze is a result of rising warm air over land, creating a localized trough of low pressure. The cooler air over the ocean (or Great Lake) moves inland to replace that air. That air is in turn replaced by the air that has risen, cooled and is now sinking. You get this whole convective loop situation going, oftentimes at a low enough level that it all happens below the altitude where you get the normal cloud development you'd expect to see with rising thermals (note on certain days how all the cumulus clouds just disappear within a couple miles of the shoreline). This whole onshore-offshore circulation can be anywhere from a couple to tens of miles wide. The whole thing gets further complicated on yet an even smaller scale by a more intense thermal rise off of a large, broad beach that introduces even more localized turbulence. Throw in an approaching weather system and the whole thing becomes a real confused mess. It looked like a really neat flight, and it's too bad you had to deal with some really sketchy air, and a rather unprofessionally behaving cop to top it off. The shoreline is a neat place to fly, but you really have to keep your head on a swivel with all of the other lower altitude air traffic of various modes that seems to be loitering there. Having to contend with both can make for a bit of stressful and frustrating flight. Looking forward to seeing more of what you managed to recover.

The turbulence thing, sounds like a normal sea breeze. The low-level wind is on-shore, and at altitude it's off-shore. IIRC, the sea breeze starts as an off-shore wind at altitude, and the low-level on shore wind develops as a result. This creates wind shear and turbulence.

Lost footage could still be recovered if you don't override it with other data. Deletion would usually simply remove the file from allocation table (sort of an "address book" on your storage medium), but it might still have the data itself that has been marked as "available space". There are plenty of recovery tools that could restore the entry in the allocation table and make the data accessible again.

The different colors of the exhaust are dependent on the heat it sees. Essentially you are tempering the metal with hot exhaust gases. Your old pipe was in the "Dark straw" color range, and that typically shows up around 470F or there about. In order to get to "purple" or "Blue", you would have to get up to about 525F-575F. So those people running their engine on the lean side or a light on oil mix might see blue. One thing you can try is wipe down the pipe with WD-40 before running it. Sometimes that is enough to get some blues.
@fwkb26 ай бұрын
We see a similar weather thing sometimes where I fly, a few miles inland from the beach. Thermals pick up inland during the day, drawing cooler air in from the ocean (seabreeze) at lower levels. We'll have a SSW wind at beach level due to that pull, but higher up the prevailing winds are still blowing NW or whatever. As the sun goes down, there is a sheer layer between the seabreeze and the predominant wind that gets that gets lower and lower until the seabreeze dies. The effect looks similar on Windy to what you were seeing, convergence at some altitude running along the coast and not far from it. I haven't seen it get that severe personally though. Here, the seabreeze doesn't usually develop unless the prredominant wind is fairly light.
@IAmOftenWrong6 ай бұрын
I was about to say exactly this. With an offshore breeze of up to about 15mph and good convection inland you are likely to get a Sea Breeze as described above with an associated shear layer and turbulence. Also at some point the offshore wind will be forced back by the onshore wind caused by the convective low pressure inland and you'll likely also find turbulence at this time. I witnessed many such 180 degree shifts whilst paragliding on the South Downs, UK. Some were damn scary going from 10mph on the hill to 30mph over the back of the hill! Fortunately most of us were on the ground by that point but the more skilled XC Pilots would time their launch to perfection and sky out on the Sea Breeze Front, not a task for the faint-hearted! Twice I landed on the hill in the opposite direction to which I'd launched 😮. On the upside the SB often provided excellent cliff soaring conditions and 'The Brighton Run' would be on. Them were the days 😊

Regarding the wind anomaly, I'm reminded of a hang glider flight where I reached 1000 feet ASL at a site that normally has a maximum height for my setup of around a third of that. It's a small coastal site facing NE. On this fine sunny day day, the wind was normal at launch but within about half an hour I found myself topping-out at 1000 feet looking across to the other bewildered hg pilots flying either side of me. Everyone but me that day took that extra height to fly up the coast and land a few kilometres further north but I decided to hang out above launch. One one of my passes I noticed unusually rough air, thought wft? pulled on speed and then the full 'washing machine' really kicked in! It was quick decision time. I checked my height, I had 800 feet on the vario and considered flying to the next beach away from the unknow source of the turbulence but quickly decided the distance to that LZ was too far away, and that the next safest bet was the landing on the beach directly below me. My main thought was, "Get out of this rough air now!" I very quickly decided to do a wide high speed arc out over the water to lose height, while judging my position and descent for a spot on the beach. The whole time during that spiral arc the air was rougher than I'd ever know in front of a hill. I landed a little ungainly but well on the beach. In discussions afterwards, we all agreed that a bubble of still air had created an invisible air-bubble hill in front of the actual hill that was held there by the higher ride several kilometres back from the coast and that we were flying in the ridge-lift produced at the front of that invisible bubble a air. Could your wind anomaly have been cased by a similar effect, I wonder.
