Tailwheel Hawaii Hey man, I know it was a bit back that you commented this, but I just became a part 107 commercial drone pilot, and I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about people calling the cops on drones because they are 1) loud 2) flying over their property 3) ‘taking pictures of their house/car/kids/property/trash cans’ and in the stories I have heard - all but 1 actually - the officer is on the side of the person who calls - I mean this is pretty common I guess, albeit strange - but then they come over and tell the pilot essentially that they have to stop, and even if the pilot explains that it’s legal, or that they are certified by the FAA to be doing it, etc. the cop will say something like in this video, ‘well just keep it to a minimum’ or, ‘make sure you aren’t flying over their house since it’s disturbing them’ or something to the effect of, ‘okay, fine, I can’t stop you, but please stop’ and I guess I am trying to ask, seriously, not trying to sound like a jerk or anything, what is the best way to continue doing your completely legal activity as much as you want and wherever you want (I.e. not ‘keeping it to a minimum’ or ‘avoiding their house’ - as long as it’s legal) when you are getting the cops called. The FAA recommends a high visibility vest identifying yourself as an FAA certified pilot. They say it’s good for public opinion and stuff, so I bought one, and I figure that will help make the conversation a bit at least letting them know that I’m a professional, in the middle of doing my job, instead of the officer assuming I’m just out flying my drone upsetting people as a hobby, but I’m still seriously worried about having a negative interaction when I meet my first cop that knows nothing about FAA regulations in general or about part 107 (and hey, I am not expecting them to; they aren’t the FAA), but when they tell me it’s illegal, and I need to do it for my job (and it isn’t illegal) I’m not really sure where to go from there, you know?
@IsaanRick4 жыл бұрын
Ashby Technologies Hi, first off thats great your doing commercial work! Ya it is so hard when someone in the community who doesn’t know the law calls the Police who respond to a complaint and make a decision and they don’t know the law! You have done the right thing by checking with the FAA/FISDO for guidance. I would in the future respectfully show the officer your pilot cert., this will give you more ( I am just not some dude flying a drone) but rather a professional doing work. Then show a copy of FAA rules and explain “I am a professional like them doing a job within the perimeters of the law”. Followed up with “I am sorry for their inconvenience I will try to minimize the impact”! So in a nutshell, help educate the officer respectfully and they will relate to their peers the contact and in the future when they respond to a similar case you will save the next guy any hassles. Hope this helps and feel free to message anytime. Good luck with your business!!

Tucker, as a police officer for 23 years and a newbie paramotor pilot myself (only 2 years), from the bottom of my heart, I can't thank you enough for this video! As I began watching, I had my fingers crossed and by the end I found myself wondering how best to thank you. I could go on for pages but I think what made me smile most about it is that it's a snap shot of how things can and should be... no arguments, no egos, just simply human beings... the police doing their best to do their jobs and you doing your best to be an ambassador of something you feel passionate about and in the end, all are better for it. Tucker, you and flyguyalberta were my inspirations to get into the sport that I now have to come love very much and you both continue to inspire and educate me as I continue to better myself as a new pilot. And although you are much younger than I, I want you to know that I've looked up to you as a pilot and ambassador of the sport and, now, I look up to you simply... as a human being. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

As a law nerd and someone getting into this sport there are definitely laws that could be enforced depending on situations beyond what the FAA says. Supreme court cases overrule anything from a regulatory commission. For instance land owners also own the airspace above so if you disturb the land or occupants there you can actually be arrested and held liable (US v Causby). Also there are public nuisance laws. All that being said if you're not being stupid about it you shouldn't ever deal with any issues from a legal standpoint. I really appreciate how polite and professional you were in these. When combined with being knowledgeable that goes a long way to protect yourself but also protect possible future regulations from being passed to restrict what should be a very free sport.

Quite honestly, your Harley is a bane to the peace and quiet of neighborhoods unless it is extremely muffled. A paramotor is much more quiet and, well, a hell of a lot more liberating. Shirt's in the mail, I'm in :) Last interaction's my favourite, in all of them everybody handled it well though, nobody jumping to conclusions, asking the right questions, concerns in the right places etc

You're really a fantastic ambassador for the sport. By maintaining your cool and being friendly, you're very good at de-escalating the cops, if they come in sketchy, before they even get going. Keep up the good work.

This video just proves that New Jersey State Troopers are cool. We'll stay tuned for videos from other flyers in other States to see their reactions. Great compilation.👍
