COP26 Glasgow: Why equity is key to stopping climate change. Indepth presentation by Sunita Narain

Down To Earth

Sunita Narain Director General, Centre for Science and Environment traces the inequities of emissions that has led to run away climate change. Issues such as cumulative historical emissions are slowly being phased out of the climate change discourse thereby removing the responsibility of a handful of countries like the US, the UK, the EU, Japan, Russia, Canada and Australia for creating the problem of global warming. Since 2001, China too has become part of the problem. Together the seven rich countries along with China will control over 70% of the carbon space left between 2020 and 2030.
Sunita Narain traces unjust share of carbon emissions that have helped a certain group of countries to develop while putting pressure on poor countries which are still developing to take unjust mitigation measures. Will net zero emissions targets by 2050 help the mitigate climate change? Sunita Narain says probably not, because that will mean emitting now and trying to offset it later.

Just how much has the atmosphere warmed in the last 40 years? I'm curious since that's the area that is central to the GHG reduction postulate. Thanks!

Incredible resources, thanks so much! :) Also worth mentioning the richer part of the world has moved away from manufacturing and imported the goods from elsewhere in the world, which means the total amount of emissions would be much higher than reported and mentioned if we take into account things that they import over to have better quality of life.

I wanna ask something mam. The majority emissions are from industries so do you think if domestic households curb emissions they would make any meaningful impact?
@aakansha353
@aakansha353 2 жыл бұрын
Cutting emissions on the part of industries is need of the hour. But that shouldn't mean the domestic emissions should be ignored. We have come at the verge of a climate catastrophe. Everyone has to act. Proportional action is required, but no one can ignore emissions at this point in human history.
