Okay I only use KZbin & FB . ----Copan was close to the source of jade , a valued stone of status in funerary offerings throughout Mesoamerica. The Usumacienta R. is on the boundary of a triple junction convergence of 3 geologic plates . In the period around 600 b.c.e. , ocean levels were lower and exposed spits of land jutted out along the Antilles arc. This encouraged migration and trade with Yucatan and Cuba. I went to Xochicalco in 1991 , an important site in Guerrero state Mx. . They didn't have any information on the place, and gave me a generic receipt , which really was disappointing. Not even a crude map or date of occupation. It was there that astronomer priests had come from all across the empire to re calibrate the calendar by noting the sun path behind a volcanic peak during an epicycle . The shadow was fixed in a shaft so that the sun at a precise point removed it briefly. This was around 450 a.c.e. In Summary, the Maya Calendar revolved around the 260 day cycle of Venus in conjunction with the earth 365 day cycle . More accurate than the Gregorian in Europe, it still lost enough seconds over time that an eclipse was missed in predicting, a foreboding event to the populace. I want to see Yaxchilan but it isn't safe now. Be careful in Yucatan...

I visited in 2009, just as a military coup was taking place so travel was limited. While I was at Copan there were no other visitors so I had a unique experience.

Copan was one of the last Mayan indian holdouts in early 1700's. The Spanish defeated the local indians (Mayans). I read this in a Padre's diary or account of the event.

Yeah, multi-ethnic of people that were from the same general location. So are the Chinese, the Europeans, the Indians, the Egyptians.. that does not say much at all.. it's just obvious that people tend to migrate.. but guess what, they didn't pick a plane and go to the mayan capital or anything, it wasn't the same idea that people romanticize today.. it happened slowly.. and until a ethnic group grew more than the other it was already 100 years or something specially surrounding crisis and wars. Remember, there was slavery in the mayan era, nothing makes me like them less, their architecture, and to acknowledge the sad fact we could know more about them today (I don't think people who fantasize about it being rainbows really like history). Good video, thumbs up.
