My 2002 with 4.7 had almost 500k on original engine and transmission and was still going strong before it got totaled by older drunk guy in my driveway… So those engines can last . Was one of my best trucks I ever owned

my grandpa has an 05’ dakota with the 4.7 bought it brand new and he has maintained it very well it has 120,000 miles and is running like a top so basically the 4.7 is a good motor as long as you take care of it

I had an 08 Dodge Ram with the 4.7 and it gave me nearly 200k with absolutely no issues. The main thing is just keeping them properly maintained

I work at a machine shop and just finished building a 4.7. They are good engines as long as you take care of it and definitely change the oil when it's needed. The one I rebuilt had 267000 on it and the rotating assembly was in great shape considering the mileage. The truck ran great before but the customer just wanted the engine refreshed for piece of mind. It truly didn't need the rebuild. Anyway, I'd take that truck in a heart beat and put the factory exhaust back on it. Also, put the smaller diameter steel wheels on it. Those bigger alloy wheels with smaller profile tires usually make the truck bounce going down the road. Just food for thought. Thanks for the vid and good luck with everything.

Check the Ram's car fax and maybe look on IAA to see the previous damage. It may be work for you while your 2021 is in the shop. BTW, i would only have the hood painted, buy one tire and have the truck detailed. Then sell it when your 2021 is fixed.

Had a ride in the back of one of these a couple times to the county farm, seemed pretty reliable and comfy as long as they are maintained compared to the previous body style 5.7Hemis ,and yes the one i rode in is our town police cruiser-undercover..pretty sneaky when they first got it 😂 lol

All I got to say about the 4.7 is It’s an OK motor, it’s not terrible, as long as you do the maintenance because those motors are hungry for oil every change are you gonna be on top of the maintenance but I take a shot and see how it goes until the 21 gets fixed

$2500 in the current market for a 4x4 truck that runs and looks decent is a steal. I'd go for it, it's a no brainer for a work truck. Even if you dump $1-2k into it that's still like 4 payments on a new truck.

The 4.7 was a solid motor. It didn't have the complicated issues that some of the 5.7 Hemi engines did, like the VVT or cylinder deactivation. It also didn't have the power of the Hemi, but it's not a bad 2nd choice. I own a 2009 with the Hemi...that was the last year of the Dodge brand on the Ram trucks.

Helpful tip for you a quick way to see if truck has hemi or not with out looking under hood is if tail gate has the flex fuel. Badge it’s got the 4.7

randy its completely your decision about the ram. I will say that with that model year you cold get a modern 5.7l and delete the MDS out of it and you'd be fine. any 5.7 after 2011 though. the older 5.7 liked to drop valve seats. BUT Yeah!!! 2500 and a 4x4!?! you def. wouldn't get hurt!

I bought same exact truck, but 2wd and less miles. Same wheels, color, Quad Cab, toolbox, bedliner, etc for $2000. Sold it for $2800, the 4.7 started misfiring after 20 minutes after purchase and driving it for 15 minutes prior. 4.7 is a headache. But for 2500, plus fees....be about a $3300-$3500 truck and salvage title....nah

Subie Boxer engines are notorious for failed head gaskets. My brother is still driving his 2005 Forester (167K mi) but for the last year it's been leaking oil. A couple of shops he's taken it to confirm it's the head gaskets and quoted $4,000 to fix it. A used engine is a crap-shoot too because unless you KNOW that engine has had the head gaskets done it's VERY likely it too will fail the same way. He's just driving it into the ground now.

I was a parts driver at a dodge dealer, they had an 05 4.7 stake bed with a little over 175k they said 200k we’ll get a new one. I drove that truck everyday and abused the hell out of it, overheated it 4 times past 3/4 and till this day it has 270k running strong

Same thing for the 6.4liter HEMI had to spend a week getting a crankshaft and tearing apart the motor on my homies 2014 Dodge Charger SRT8 thats the only reason why HEMI has left a bittersweet taste in my mouth

The Dodge Ram looks nice for $2500. I have a 2003 Ram 1500 with a 4.7L. My only complaint is it only gets 12 mpg when towing. It should work until you get your other one repaired. My 2005 Dodge Caravan gets 20 mpg when towing cars, so maybe you can get the Subaru and add a towing package.

I'd jump on that Ram, that is a steal on that truck. New paint, clear headlights, an interior detail and some nice seat covers and she aint half bad at all. Good workhorse you don't have to care a lot about getting dirty or dented up since its already got hail on it.

Well worth the buying price for the RAM. Get the small stuff sorted out and it could be a good tow pig. And then flip it. Might be worth $5k when your done with it. In this market junk is selling for $2k. Running and driving good daily is worth $3k to $5k a lot of people.

The main things, the engine sounds healthy and the trans and transfer case all work. The rear axle is worth 1500.00 on its own. The Hemi would be desirable but they have their issues too. The 4.7 sounds good. 2500 for a decent truck that isn't all rusted out is worth it.

As long as the 4.7 was halfway decent lay taken care of they're actually really good motors. I have 3 quad cab 2001 Dakota's with the 47 all over 250000 miles that pull landscape trailers daily and I've had 0 problems. With my personal Dakota I have pulled a 1979 F254 wheel drive with a lawn mower in the bed on Au haul trailer and it didn't even know it was there yeah, other than stopping

The ram may have a engine you don’t personally like but they are a good engine. It’s kinda one of them when there good there good and bad when bad. It sounded good so I would say you don’t really have to worry about it. The transmission yes could be a problem but picking up a used one and having it put in should be under a grand. Honestly that tuck will do everything you need it to do. You probably will be surprised how well it does. Get the option code and see what gear is in it.

I’d say jump all over that Ram. I had an 08 that was exactly like that one, but in Flame Red. In 2008 Dodge made some much needed improvements to the 4.7, bumped it to 310 hp & 330 lb/ft of torque. Mated to the 5spd with 3.92 gears it’s damn close to the 5.7 of that era. Biggest thing id look for on the auction lot is pop the oil cap and flip it over to see if there’s any sludge/condensation build up, as that was an issue on the 4.7/5.7 bc of the pcv system. Also this engine actually has 16 spark plugs even though it’s not a 5.7, 8 up top under the coil pack, and 8 down in the side of the head. Biggest weak point I found on mine was the front hubs, dang thing ate them like candy😆. Even though I’m partial to the 5.7, that ol girl has a lot of life left in her.
