Recipe to Turn Copper Green, Fast
Put on old clothes, goggles, and rubber gloves when you work with the ingredients to clean and age the copper.
Cleaning Solution
Ingredients needed for cleaning solution
Quart spray bottle, 70 percent rubbing alcohol, ammonia, and grease-cutting dishwashing soap
Wear old clothes, goggles, and rubber gloves while you work to avoid your skin oils from transferring to the copper.
Remove lacquer coatings with acetone, nail polish remover or a commercial paint thinner. Use commercial paint thinner, or nail polish remover to remove the lacquer coating that may be on the copper.
Put 26 ounces of warm water, ½ cup of 70 percent rubbing alcohol isopropyl alcohol, ¼ teaspoon of soap, and 2 tablespoons of ammonia into a quart spray bottle.
Spray the cleaner onto the copper to wipe it and wipe it off with a lint-free cloth.
Aging Solution
It takes time to turn copper green and the aging solution may need to be applied numerous times to reach the results that you want.
Wear old clothes, goggles, and rubber gloves while you work.
Ingredients needed for the aging solution
Lemon juice, iodine-free salt, quart spray bottle, and a large plastic trash bag with tie.
Mixture Prep
Put equal amounts of salt without iodine, household ammonia, white distilled vinegar, lemon juice in the quart spray bottle. Don’t use salt that has iodine in it because it produces less green patina on the copper. Replace the lemon juice with more ammonia if you don’t have the lemon juice on hand. The lemon juice helps age the copper faster than the ammonia alone.
To Age the Copper
Put on old clothes, goggles, and rubber gloves and put the copper item in the plastic bag and then spray it with cleaning solution, allow five minutes for it to clean the surface and then spray the copper with the aging solution.
Then tie off the plastic bag to create a simulated humid environment. Let it sit for a few hours and repeat the process until the desired results are obtained. The copper may turn green after the first coat but it is best to repeat coatings for it to work usually create the best results.
