Today I melt some copper pieces sent to me by an Aussie subscriber as well as try out some molds I made almost 40 months ago in the old garage with not the best Mixed results . Not to worry I love and melting and todays was still fun to do . I'm at 99% of my target so that's a great milestone to pass soon. Anyway have an awesome day and see you all soon.
Now Guys if you Feel like supporting the channel it wont cost you a cent as you can Simply just donate some of your time. By just by allowing the ads to play through this will help out a lot and that’s how I make a bit extra revenue and the good thing is more revenue means more giveaways and more treats for the dogs👊🏻😄. A better way to support the channel is play one of my playlists on your computer before you walk away from it and let it play through that really helps as well but don’t ever feel as though you need to watch the ads if you don’t want to simply skip them and move into the video it’s completely up to you and I understand if you don’t have the time to do so👌🏻😁👍🏻.

HOW I MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

I've noticed you tend to get holes in your bars in the same place where the graphite accumulates - it might be oxidising and generating gas, which causes the bubbles. Might be better to use a brush and actually brush a thin layer of graphite over the whole mould instead.

I'm a former boilermaker and I've always had a certain attraction for copper, I don't know why precisely but its color, its "warmth", its malleability have always made it the "metal" I prefer and that hasn't changed despite the years without being able to practice my craft anymore, I love to see your castings of this precious red metal, especially when you melt pieces as clean as this one at the beginning of the video, no impurities to "spoil" the beauty of the casting, it's fluid, homogeneous and a bit like molten lava ❤ On the other hand, I'm not a fan of holes like those that appear at the bottom of your bars, and I would certainly have remelted the ingots too.

Bubbling in molds isn't likely just water, but also traces of leftover wax. The flaming upon pouring makes it even more obvious. I'd add gypsum...as in wall board....to your plaster, as well as some sand. Tinker with the recipe till it works well for you, then make sure you heat the molds to the wax's boiling point, and hold it there for a few hours to make sure you get rid of it all. It should help a bit if you pour into hot molds too.

BigStackD, thanks for the nice wedding anniversary melt today! Huh? Oh, it is my wife and I 44th wedding anniversary! We were married in an outdoor wedding on August 4, 1979! The temperature was 82 degrees Farenheit (27.8 Celsius). In case anyone wonders, we live in the State of Ohio, USA. Obviously, our seasons are the opposite of Australia's seasons. Still wondering what you will do when you hit 1,000 tonnes of your melts. Have a great day and weekend and keep on smelting!

I learned about how all drywall is fire resistant due to the gypsum core being made of calcium sulfate dihydrate. Basically, as it heats up, the trapped water molecules that forms the dihydrate releases as steam, requiring a lot of energy to burn through and penetrate. Plaster of Paris is fundamentally the same material. Long story short, plaster molds will never work for this application because there will always be water trapped in the molds. No matter how long you dry them, it's bound by chemistry until you burn it, in this case with molten metal. I'd recommend concrete molds for the future. Love your vids and all you are about! Hope this might help you out a bit

Another thing you might try to make your molds out of is ceramic sculpting clay. You can get it at any ceramic craft stores. It can be thinned with water, can can be poured like plaster of paris. But it will allow for better evaporation of water, as it will not solidify and hold water like plaster of paris will. Edit: I remember that the type of casting is called lost wax casting. The mold is put into an oven to melt the wax. Then when the wax has melted out, the mold is left in the oven to cook off any leftover wax. The baking removes any excess moisture. Sorry I can't provide you with more info. But a search on line should get the info for you. Good luck on the next pour.

Mechanical engineer here, so trust me bro im a guy on the internet. Anyway the graphite powder is likely amorphous particle shape. Very high surface area. The main principle here is adhesion. What adheres to the surface is water vapor and plain ol’ air molecules. It takes a while to drive off the water vapor, or a lot more final temp. He should bake it before. But there is still adhesion of the air molecules. That is likely the main culprit, and indeed some of that is oxygen, which burns the graphite, though thats doesnt really exacerbate the problem much if at all, cause its the same moles of gas with relatively same volume. He would get best results by heating the powder separately from the mold inside the furnace to same temp as what metal hes pouring. Id wager it would be near perfect. I think there is another solution here though. Instead of powder, simply take a framers pencil and draw all over it uniformly and dump any residual powder out. You will have a nice graphite/graphene coating.

Copper’s current price per kg is $8.28. A 1.75 kg bar is worth $14.49 at that price, and copper prices were slightly higher at the time this video was published.

One of these days, you'll get something cool from those moulds. Can't wait until then. The bar was pretty cool! 🤙🤙🤙 Fan mail though was..... AWESOME!!!!! We all send you some great stuff, don't we! 😁😁😁 Fans are great! Almost to said goal!!!!!! Like.....SOOOOOOOO CLOSE.... Dogs are doing great. Could it maybe be the weather? NONE of us saw the date on that package. 😉 The stuff I'll be sending you is expensive and I have to wait to get transportation to even get it. Gotta go mining for it. 😁😁😁 Summer here has been hell.... Up north the air quality is absolute shit. Bio warfare I'd call it. When they dump biochemicals on purpose in rivers from the railroad, it eventually evaporates into nasty dusty air that could seriously kill ya.... So gotta wait for all of that bs to clear out. And the weather in general is just total shit. Too hot and stormy all the time. Not very good mining weather. They've also got rock shops up north. I'm gonna try and hopefully score ya some stuff from somewhere. 🤙🤙🤙💙💙💙💜💜💜 Thanks for all the videos you do. I've enjoyed every single one of them. Always look for a weekend of BigStackD. 😁😁😁

i used to be a maintenance man at a dental lab. Those technicians would keep their investment castings ripping hot 1500 F upto the minute they poured. now they were spin casting gold crowns and such. They also waxed in multiple vents.

good video BigStack. I have done some plaster casting and it doesn't give the greatest results. A few things that help, mix a little portion thinner and dab it on the molds too capture the detail better. Dab let it set dab again repeat till you are happy. Then when you pour the main mold, if you can get it there mix in some vermiculite. It helps with holding the mold together in the heat, you can also add some white silica sand to the mix as an added binder. this will help you Of course we used this mix for aluminu casting nothing as intense as brass or copper. Maybe this will help. Keep up the great work.

Yes well on the next mold I’m gonna do half POP half silica sand and have the mold in the kiln holding at 1000°C and when I’m gonna use the mold I’ll pull it out pour into it while it’s still super heated and I’m sure that will give a lot better results👊🏻😁

Yes, it can be tricky to get large bags of white powder past customs, even if it's only investment plaster.😂 . As for the holes in your copper, heat your steel (don't use graphite) mold to at least red heat, preferably 1100°C or more. You want to keep that molten copper as free-flowing as possible, for as long as possible, to allow the gas bubbles to make it to the top and burst. Right now, the copper is freezing before the gasses can escape. I'm pretty sure that's why it takes 5 or 6 goes to get a bar without holes - the molds are staying hotter for longer by that stage.

That BBQ sauce is 'native' to my part of South Carolina. Pretty easy to find it at the store or in several BBQ establishments. Good choice!
