So, I got a new Leatherman Free P4, and I could not help myself, I had to copper plate it...
Aside from the copper plating, I really like this new Leatherman, and the Olight S1R II Baton Flashlight should also be quite awesome. I look forward to both of them developing a cool patina on the copper.
If you want to help out the channel, and pick up a new Leatherman Free P4 or the Olight Flashlight there are affiliate links below:

I know someone that does the plating, usually starting with copper no matter what the final plating will be. You can get better results if you use a low voltage adapter, 3 volts or less. 500 ma or less. then run two copper electrodes in the acid for a day or so. Remove the electrodes and use the one that was on the receiving side of the first go round to plate whatever using the same low power adapter. Takes longer, but you get better results.

I have a SAK Champ that my late mother bought me 35 years ago from Switzerland, it has far too much sentimental value as it is for me to do this with it. I also have my late father's/grandfather’s knife which I refuse to use as I don’t want to lose Dad's edge. I also have my other grandfather’s knife he used in WWI and The Boer War. Both of these carry great sentimental value also. Hopefully you can see where this is going, because I sure hope my wife can understand the logic when I tell I need a new Leatherman so I can try this. I think it looked really good and with the title of the video I thought it had gone catastrophically wrong when just the opposite was true. I’ve never copper plated anything in my life and suddenly it’s something I must do. I wish you’d sharpened it post plating as I think the contrast between the copper and the stainless steel on the blade would have looked great, Another excellent video, very well done and thank you for risking your new knife to make it.

It will be interesting to see if the plating last sliding in and out of the sheath after a year, and to compare it with the plating on the light . Also might think about using copper rivets on both the sheath for hatchet and Leatherman . Great idea though . Years ago I pick up a Leartheman original at an estates sail for $ 14.00 it was never used and has been with me and still never used to this day but it's in the car where I think most leather man live and are never used .Happy Trails

@denniswhite166
@denniswhite166 5 жыл бұрын
@@jackallen5038 Thanks. I had lost this knife for a while and when I found it (between the bucket seats of my car) there was some rust on it. I thought this was SS and was ticked off. It all came off except one spot near where the blade near the peg that goes through the blade is. It is quite unsightly (I just looked it up and this blade is 1660). I was wondering if this part would cover as well as getting rid of this unsightly spot would be my reason for plating it. What grit would you suggest to sand it with before plating? 800?
@oldshovel
@oldshovel 5 жыл бұрын
I would guess that this process depends on the type of steel.
@jackallen5038

Dennis Whiter depends on the surface finish you want, I usually sand with 400 because the copper bonds with it nicely and it makes the finish on the copper look really clean after polishing
