Copper Wire Separation (Do It Yourself) Granulator in detail

After many comments and questions about my Granulator I decided to make a video showing it in more detail.

Mate, you’re the first person I have found on the Tube that has taken the time to show how these machines work. So many of the DYI machines are really only good for solid core wire. Smaller multi strand wire really needs a granulator. So you went and paid 850 quid for a proper granulator and then went to the trouble of making a 30 minute video of how it works, improvements and ideas to build your own just to help out other people. A big 👍👍👍👍 to you for doing that. When you put a harness through your machine do you strip the binding tape off it first or can you just trim the fittings off and throw it in? Hi Stuart.yes your right,most of the videos are manufacturers promoting there products and they dont always tell the truth! For example,you will see a bit of wire being fed into the granulator and hear the granulator hardly under any strain and then they show absolutely loads of granules coming out the other end lol.Yes I take the tape and plugs off before granulating,if you leave the tape on then it will end up as a sticky mess that blocks up the screen.There are ways you can granulate with the tape on such as freezing the wire first,adding powder or mixing the wire that has tape on with 3 or 4 times more clean wire.Thanks for your kind comment.

@@rassas1975 Hi Mike,some scrap yards will give more for hand stripped copper because they can see its pure copper and they dont always trust whats in copper granules,there could be brass,tinned copper excetera mixed in

Have you ever run anything else through that machine? Perhaps a circuit board with heat sinks, steel, and other chunky parts removed.

Hey, good day sir, I have a couple of questions if you don´t mind, i´m making one, but it overheats a lot, so much that you can´t even touch the walls, obviously, the blades are even hotter, any idea why? by watching this video, i´m thinking that it is because of the speed, i let it run with the full 1740 rpm that gives the motor, but you say that it must be slow , now seeing your motor that is 1400 rpm, and the ratio of your pulleys, your blades spin at something around 350 rpm, am i right? so i´m guessin that the overheating is due to the inmense speed that i´m using, or do you encounter any similar problem? and you say that if it spins too fast it will jam, which it does happen, if i put in it not so much cable, but it does jam, now, my second question is, how much cable do you calculate you can process with this granulator per hour? i have already made a question in other video and you were so kind, thanks in advance for everything.

Hello,350rpm for my granulator speed sounds about right but I have not worked it out.I have not worked with any others so I cant say for sure what the correct rpm should be but Iam sure yours running at 1740 rpm will generate more heat.Yes I have had problems with heat,the most common cause for me is the granulator screen being blocked.The quicker the wire can pass through the granulator the less work the granulator needs to do so it produces less heat,thats why I remove all the insulation tape first.Make sure your blades are sharp and you prevent any steel getting through to damage your blades.This summer I have been using an electric fan to keep my granulator cool,I have even seen that some granulators are water cooled which would be easy to setup if you have a water seperation system,sorry but I have not timed how long it takes to granulate the wire yet.Hope this helps you and thanks for your comment.

Hello,yes I dont get a lot of the thicker wire but when I do get some,it all goes through the separation process together with the thin wire with no problems.

Hi.( "limited" in quantity")sounds like your not granulating copper?Maybe IC chips?Without knowing for sure what you are doing I can only advise you on blades for copper,the advantage of using a planer is blades are easy to get and are cheap,to make them last longer make sure you take all the steel out of what you granulate and keep your planer from getting too hot.For my blades I used D2 Tool steel bought on Ebay but be aware that you may need to have D2 tool steel heat treated before use and heat treatment can "warp" the blade.Its better to buy it already heat treated,hope this helps

Yes thats correct, I bought it from a plastics factory and it was used for granulating the seconds from an injection moulding machine.

Great video. I didn't catch who you bought your granulator from. Was it from a plastics processor? I'm wondering if a plastics granulator if slowed down would work for household type wire. Was yours originally intended for plastics or copper?

Hi,yes I bought it from a plastics factory,they used it to granulate the rejects.Not sure if there is a difference between a copper or a plastic granulator but I did not need to slow this one down to do household wire,but I have spent a lot of time making and trying different sized screens plus I modified the input chute (which I mentioned at the start of the video.One thing is for sure,you cant just go out and buy a granulator and expect to separate wire straight away,you need to fine tune your system with the most suitable screen and settings on your separation system.My setup is for car looms which can be very sticky due to the insulation tape so Iam using a 2.5mm screen and I mix in domestic wire if I have some,then after drying it all goes through my 1mm vibrating screen.Thanks for your comment and if you have anymore question,you are welcome to ask.

Hello, very good video, we bought a granulator today :) can you help us with the distance between the turning and counter blades? my thinking is if you want to cut small fine cable you need to bring the knives closer right? thank you for the videos helped us a lot to understand our machine very quick...

Hello,yes I try to get them as close together as possible to the point where I worry that they may touch if the granulator gets too warm and expands,but its not happend yet.Also I sharpen the blades myself and try to get the angle just right so as they come together the sharp points of the blades have a very small gap as they travel across the entire face of the opposing blade,a bit like a pair of scissors.

@@corsagafa my answer did not post the last time :/ first of all, thank you for your advise! we used a 2mm borsize plate and with very worn blades we got very good results already, we had 0.5mm gap between the blades, when the new blades arrive I will try to go down to 0.1mm gap. our machine got jammed several times we need to learn the do's and don'ts. our granulator mill has 15kW and the blades are 300mm in with, so the machine is quite big. we make around 100kg granulate per hour with worn plates and we are not very deep into the machine yet. we found out how to separate the granulate with several cyclon separators in series with bypasses.. Hello Ivan,I use a 2.5mm screen in my granulator and then I put the granules through my vibrating screen which has a 1.5mm screen.which is the exact same setup as part 1 and part 2 of my Burnt Plugs video

Hello,the screen hole size is 2.5mm if iam using my vibrating screen after the water separation ,or sometimes if Iam not using the vibrating screen I will use the 1.5mm screen in the granulator.The gap between the granulator blades is as small as possible,maybe between .1mm and .2mm .

Hello,yes the copper wire is chopped in the machine,small enough that it is separated from the plastic and then the plastic is washed away in the water chute,thanks for your comment.

@@uoufs Not sure its possible to describe dry separation in these comments because it far more complicated than water systems,but I will try, The separation table is sloped and the copper is "bumped"uphill as the table moves forwards and backwards,the plastic slides downhill with the help of air which is blown from under the table and the dust and other fine particles are sucked up through the top of the canopy by a vacuum,

What's the ratio of copper to plastic in relation to percentage of plastic compared to copper, I know when I'm stripping heavy cable it's about 15-20 percent plastic waste, what would the small cable plastic/copper ratio be do you know, I'm thinking of buying a granulator but am on the fence at the moment
