Probably the best era for a useable classic car, with style , reasonable performance & easy maintenance & repair. Yes , Scotty is right , just accept the car for what it is, without getting into resprays & changing everything, keep regular 5000 mile oil changes & treat the rust as it appears &you have a classic Ford that'll last decades to come!

You should tell him to install the carb cheater on it, it'll keep his f. RM perfect. Ozzie has to do is drill a hole in his exhaust and put a wide band 02 sensor on it that comes with the cat. And it uses vacuum to keep you at your ultimate air fuel mixture. No matter the temperature or if you're slamming on the gas or just cruise in doesn't matter. It takes care of the only thing carbs don't do good with. And if it ever goes bad, your car still runs because it's still just A. Regular carb, you're not changing anything mechanical, really.

I used to have a 1978 Ford LTD station wagon. Got it in 2006 with 22,000 original miles. Drove it until 2016 when the body was rotted out. Used in a demo derby, and it still ran when done. Sold it to a Ford guy who wanted the drive train. He was thrilled as it was still operating fine.

M dad had a 1971 Buick Estate Wagon. He came home with that car on February 7,1971. My Moms birthday ! Came with a 455 under the hood and of course it had the clamshell tailgate. Great car with front power seats, power windows and locks, luggage rack, tow package, AM/FM 8 track, 3rd back seat, cinnamon brown with beige top.OH yes 400 turbo tranny and power brakes and steering. Too bad the car got crashed totaled November 1976. Car was the veteran of a couple of round the country road trips back in august 72 and July 73.

When I was a kid the neighbor had a newer Torino station wagon with power brakes. There was a big metal circle on the brake pedal and it said POWER BRAKES. I was riding in the front seat. I asked him what that meant. He said the car had more stopping power. Nobody even thought of wearing seat belts back then and we were packed in the car. I was down on the floor in the front seat. I reached over and touched the brake pad to see if the ring was real metal. The car came to a screeching halt. Very good brakes. I got yelled at, of course.

I'll take an antique any day over modern cars that explode into pieces if someone rams a shopping cart into it. My first accident, I came over a blind hill doing maybe 20-25 and slipped on wet ice right into a stopped Honda, who then got off the clutch and rammed into a Nova. My car had a pushed-in grille but not even the headlights were broken, the Honda was destroyed front and back, dumped its coolant, etc., and the Nova had a scuff mark on the rear bumper. Nova Guy just looked at his bumper, said he'll give his info, but being that nothing happened to his car, he was outta there, and took off.

She is is a beautiful, and drum brakes work just fine because of their self actualization built into the design! It is fascinating- look it up. Only draw back is they tend to have trouble dissipating heat and (water if totally submerged )as well as disks and are far more complex with all the springs and gilhickys etc . But they stop you fine , no boost needed because of the ingenious mechanical engineering!

I love wagons. My first car was a '60 Chevy wagon. I could put my 16-foot duck hunting skiff in the back, and it would only stick out a couple of feet beyond the lowered tailgate. Later I got a '88 Ford Fairmont, straight 6 with 5 on the floor. I had to wait an extra month to get the car, because the transmission was made in England, and they had to ship it to the Ford Factory in Michigan. I sold it when it had 99,000 miles. Years later I talked to the person I sold it to, and she put on another 60,000 by then, and it still had the original clutch. My last wagon was an '88 Taurus. One of the best cars Ford ever made. I got to 188,000 on it before I overheated it, and the engine seized. By then only Europeans were making wagons, so bought a 2004 Ranger that I still have. It has a manual transmission, roll-up windows, and plastic flooring (no carpet.) It does have power breaks and steering and even AC.
