£4000 insurance for a £500 car. The car can't be driven without insurance nowadays no matter who you are. There are cameras all over the place. Passing at 17 means that the driving test is done. The 17 year old should just save and save and get a car at 21 if possible or wait until they are 25 when insurance is cheaper.

No, what’s the bloody point in being licensed but not able to drive. If you’ve driven for ten years and have a 3 year break you retain the knowledge and can get straight back in the car. If you’ve only just passed the test and have a 3 year gap of no driving you’ll be back at square 1 after spending all that money on lessons and tests. Really, the problem is these scamming bastard insurance companies. People will be out stealing car’s whether they’re affordable or not so all insurers are doing is lining their pockets and making life miserable for young drivers like me.
