Don't just study slavery -- also study indentured servants in the 17th Century. America was built on the backs of both systems. Indentured servants were white people brought from England to work in the American Colonies. If you survived five or seven years (I don't remember which length it is was), you fulfilled your contract and you were free again. They were treated poorly (just nowhere near as badly as slaves) by the people they worked for. I wonder how many indentured servants actually survived to the end of their contract. Probably very few. Oh, and one other system where people were treated poorly (but not as badly as slaves) by the upper classes: governesses in Victorian England. We humans just never learn about systems that should never have been created in the first place. Abolish one really horrible system? Then create another equally horrible system, but give it a different name!

I A: Maybe if I was 10 or 20 years younger. But at age 52 (almost 53), it gets harder to study the unpleasant aspects and events of human history. For instance, I watched the "Holocaust" mini-series in the 1970s, then traveled to Europe in 1978 with my mother and two older brothers, visited Dachau Concentration Camp near Munich, I read Anne Frank's diary in grade school (I think in the 1980s), and then in 2005, I went to the Holocaust Museum in DC for the first time. I decided that that was all I needed to remember all of that part of human history. It just hurt me too much to see it (even if I'd seen it before). I could barely make it to the exit area of the Holocaust Museum without crying all the way. I have two out-of-state friends who are big Anne Frank fans and they visit the Holocaust Museum each time they visit the DC area. I don't know how they can experience it again and again without it affecting them as much as it does me. Maybe I'm just too sensitive and things hurt me more than they hurt most people. Btw, I've also learned about the Irish potato famine (and Britain's role in it) and that it was one of the reasons why so many poor Irish people immigrated to America, in the hopes of a better life. We humans can be so cruel to each other.

Hattie McDaniel became the first Black Oscar winner in 1940 for her portrayal of a slave named Mammy in the 1939 film Gone With the Wind. Sadly though, when she attended the Academy Awards ceremony at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in The Ambassador Hotel, she wasn't even allowed to sit with her co-stars. McDaniel arrived at the show with an escort and her agent, William Meiklejohn, who was white. She was even dressed in a rhinestone-studded gown with white gardenias in her hair, but this still didn't qualify herto sit at the Gone With the Wind table. Instead, she was escorted to a small table in a back room that was being used to store the Oscar award trophys. Apparently, the hotel, like most establishments of that time, had a strict "no-blacks" policy, and a special exception had to be made for her to even attend the ceremony at all. After being presented with the award for Best Supporting Actress, the discrimination continued. She could not even celebrate with her co-stars that night because the club they went to for the after party also did not allow Black people to enter. McDaniel eventually did get her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but sadly after her death in 1957, she was not allowed to be buried in the Hollywood cemetery. Even worse, another 50 years had to pass before a Black actress would win an Oscar award again. And that was when Whoopi Goldberg took home the award for her Best Supporting Actress for her 1990 film Ghost.

She went on to fight against discriminatory housing covenants in her neighborhood in LA : West Adams - Sugar Hill "Hattie McDaniel lived in West Adams on Country Club Drive. She was a leader in organizing against racial segregation in her neighborhood by getting restrictive covenants outlawed in 1948. She and her black neighbors took the case all the way to the Supreme Court, where they won the case." This same neighborhood: called Sugar Hill - Home to Louise Beavers, Ethel Waters, Ray Charles' studio and many other affluent Black musicians, actors and artists, was cut through and houses demolished to build the 10 freeway ( finished 1965). The other proposed path was over the fraternities and sororities of USC... @TheAutisticFilmmaker Nobody is talking about censoring or whitewashing history. The fact that movies today are still depicting slavery should tell you that. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_featuring_slavery The problem is when you depict it as a positive thing, which it wasn't, or as if the slaves were happy, which they weren't. The fact that there are still people today who don't think racism is a bad thing or even exists should tell you we don't need any depictions of slavery as a good thing.

Well, yea just like Child labor. There are some places in this world where you could prove child labor made the family better by giving them some kind of income. you could statistically prove that there were situations where it was better. But that doesn't mean you should accept child labor happening in your country. Now, if only people could understand that when it came to undocumented immigration instead of saying the same exact thing.

You know what the Mosaic Bible says about that? Every 7th year, slaves are freed. One could sell themselves into slavery, say, to pay a debt, and the price you would get would be based on how many years were left in your service. But, should a slave choose to stay with their master, then the nose was pierced and they became their servant for life. Back then life was hard. People stayed in their family clusters for survival. That's why adultery could get you a death sentence. It would break up a family and often result in people dying anyway.

Anil Joshi it’s all about what you view it relative to. For example if a slave was being treated decent but knew if they weren’t a slave they would be starving in the streets well then given those options I’m sure they’d actually choose to be a slave. Not saying that being a slave is the ideal option but in some situations it might have been the best option available given the limited options. I don’t think they were happy still by any means but all you can do is play the hand you were dealt the best you can.

I think Trevor is the best but I just couldn't help it...Or, ironically, like Trevor: "Trevor can be a given name or surname of Welsh origin (as a given name Trefor in Welsh): also a habitational name from any of the numerous places in Wales, in particular the one near Llangollen, from the Welsh tre(f), meaning "homestead", or "settlement" and a form of mawr, meaning "large, big", (for example in "Bryn Mawr"). Trevor is also a name of Irish origin. It is a reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Treabhair (descendant of Treabhar), which may be an Irish spelling of the Welsh name, a byname meaning "industrious", "ambitious", or "prudent". As a given name it is typically masculine, however in North America it can be (albeit rarely) a female name." (Wikipedia) "Origin of the name Trevor: Transferred use of the English surname meaning "belonging to Trevear." Trevear is a place-name in Cornwall meaning "the big farm, the big estate." It is derived from the Cornish and Welsh tre (a homestead, an estate) and mear, mawr (great, large). Alternatively, Trevor was used as an Anglicized form of the Irish Treabhar (discreet). Var: Trevar, Trever." (www.babynamewizard.com/baby-name/boy/trevor)

I agree that it's fitting that he hold the reigns for the time being, but I also think that he'd potentially do more good and reach more changeable people if he was Jon, just like Jon did for all those years. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying it is. Shitheads are afraid of/don't respect people like Noah, and will never listen to what they have to say. As white American citizens, it's our job to do everything in our power to change that. Racism is so systemic and ubiquitous that it'll be generations before it's 'fixed', and that's on paper. I truly don't think it'll be gone until everyone's the same color (we won't make it that long), it's just shitty human nature. The USA is likely the worst perpetrator of racism in the modern world, but it's far from the only one. Racism comes as naturally to human beings as breathing, and I'm not sure there's any getting around it. I'm hopeful for what comes next, and I hope even more that my gut is wrong. I found it strange when I started to hear years ago that Gone With The Wind glorified slavery. I was about 5 when I saw the movie. It's when I started to ask questions for the 1st time about why the black people were being treated differently and why they were slaves, and what that meant. Through the years as I got older, I asked my mom if it was true that some black people were ok with being slaves, and she said that if there were people who wanted to be slaves, it must've shown how truly terrifying it was for black people to imagine how hard it would be to make it on their own in a place as racist as America was. And then when I saw it again when I was a little older still, I thought how selfish and silly the white people seemed in dealing with their own problems when there were people around them, that had literally no choices and no freedom. I never saw it as glorifying slavery, but rather as highlighting how truly petty the white people were in the movie, but that was just my experience. I'm sure it's not the same for everyone else.

I think the problem is that if you go into it (the movie) and take it at face value you see great looking white people as heroes and slavery as just fine. North and South and Roots make a point to show that slavery was wrong so that isn't the same thing. (Somebody upthread defending GWTW claimed that overly sensitive liberals would want to ban Roots because it is about slavery, missing the point completely. It is how you depict slavery that is the issue.) You kind of have to already be pretty evolved NOT to be suckered into rooting for the vain Scarlet and the dashing Rhett and not giving a hoot about people being held in bondage. Personally the only thing I liked about GWTW was the scene of the burning of Atlanta but purely from amazement of the technical achievement. Scarlet is comforting a dying soldier and the camera pulls out and out showing more and more dead or dying soldiers and you know this was before CGI and the sheer scale of the number of actors and horses and costumes etc is damned impressive so I give it that, as well as the war is hell message, but the rest of it is socially speaking a disgrace. I agree however that it can be shown if there is some kind of disclaimer putting the movie in context. Still not my cup of tea overall but I won't rob people of the opportunity of seeing it if they aren't basically there just to revel in nostalgia for the time they could own others. Well to be sure some people will always use it that way but at least with the disclaimor etc young people who haven't made up their minds yet don't have it held up as the way things SHOULD be.

That is interesting about Babynames.com, I was just thinking about names today. I was looking over a sign I made that had about 90 names of Black people unjustly murdered mostly by police, and who received no justice. Writing it was hard. I actually had to start over because my poster board wasn't big enough. As I wrote each name I thought about what each person must have been like, as kids, as adults (the ones who were allowed to grow up), what their friends and family were like. What their final moments were like and the hole they left in the lives of the people around them. And how each one of those people must feel. I carried this sign at many protests and it's on my wall right now. I walked by it today and had this thought: each one of those names was picked out by a mama or papa or someone who loved that little baby and had big dreams for all that they could become. Each name probably had a reason or memory behind it. Even names that "just sounded good." Because it sounded good in that moment for a reason too. I think even though it's not huge, what that website is doing is pretty rad.

Shoot. My experience with _Cops_ has been very different. First, it has been ages since I've watched it. But second, a few years ago, I underwent vetting for jury duty and I shared this sentiment from the opening theme. "All offenders are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law." Innocence is _presumed._ It's _guilt_ that has to be proven. If the evidence is just not there, better to risk having 1000 guilty parties go free than to risk having a single innocent man or woman convicted for a crime they didn't commit. The prosecution counsel saw fit to use up one of their automatic dismissals on me. 🤷

When applying for a mortgage loan and I get to the race question and says optional for research purposes only, and hearing about discrimination towards black people, I leave it blank. And on the phone they always ask not that it matters but what is your race? Because my name is different, I have an accent, they might hear me speak in another language that they can’t make out, and if they ever see me in person they’re even more confused. They can never be professional and discuss why I’m here, they have to know before they proceed. But they make it look like they are fascinated with my background. Truth hurts.

General Alduin I would think that too but ignorance sure is bliss. It’s not me it’s the statistics being reported and numbers don’t lie. You hear this being reported all the time and I’m not going around looking for negativity in people, not my nature but when you experience it, it’s a different thing. Just the other day I read they would rather loan a poor white family than a black family who are well off because they know systemic racism is designed to make them fail. Don’t forget that glass ceiling effects where you can only achieve a certain plateau than they tax the crap out of you or just target you to make money especially in times like these. So I’m that sense you are right, bankers just want their money and have a very well understanding of this system in place. As I’m getting older I’m learning and seeing more and I wish it wasn’t like that. But i enjoy moments when I happened to stop by a bank for example to ask questions and they already have this perception of you because I’m wearing yoga pants or something but once they pull my account or credit score, they sit up and adjust their ties. I notice and enjoy that I bit, honestly. I even had a bank manager ask me “so what do you plan to do with all of this money?”. Never judge a book by its cover.

Note about Gone With The Wind ... ICYMI ... In the movie, Scarlet O'Hara continued oppressive treatment after the end of the Civil War by using "convict labor" in the sawmill she opened in Atlanta ... So when Dulce Sloane said that plantation owners would get white labor to work on their land, that was actually historically inaccurate ... they kept many blacks enslaved without calling it slavery by enacted peonage laws, which were designed to unjustly imprison mostly innocent black men to continue free labor for business and land owners ... for more information see the book and documentary called "Slavery By Another Name" ... Please do a segment on this since one of the great american myths IMHO is that slavery ended at the end of the Civil War.

There's a horrifically long history of black people getting rights on paper, only for racist assholes to find a way around it. Similar stunts were pulled after blacks gained civil rights - with many of these stunts still being in effect today. And just in case you thought this was all done by people who were against civil rights - you'd be wrong. There was a depressingly common belief among white allies that they should have said rights, but they can have them over there. A lot of white people were cool with black people having equal rights, but got all anxious over the possibility that they might have to live next door to one. I mean, in case you ever wondered why "black neighborhoods" still exist to this day, despite the abolition of segregation. Turns out there are a lot of ways to legally keep "undesirables" right where they are.

The problem is that for a black business owner to deny employment wouldn't be that big of a deal because white people have access to more jobs. So "reverse racism" isn't a big deal or a problem in the slightest. I think we should change the definition, it would force conservatives to realize that affirmative action isn't racism and would help to prevent the "white genocide" ideology of the nazis.

“Uh... ...because states wanted the right...” ...to run their business their way. I don’t know why that’s so offensives to say. Every time we say it, we point out that states wanted the right to do business by having slaves. We always acknowledge that slavery is wrong, but essentially the federal government was telling southern business owners, which mostly harvested crops, while the north was more industrialized, to basically stop production without any assistance to replace that labor. Freeing the slaves, which needed to happen, would cripple entire industries if the federal government did not assist in the transition. Imagine if today, the federal government ordered all non essential businesses to close. Can you imagine the outrage? How dare the federal government tell the states how to run their businesses! People have bills. They need to feed and clothe their kids. They have to pay their mortgage/rent. Wait... ...that did happen. Why wasn’t there a civil war over it? I watch the news. I see nationwide battles going on... ...but something tells me, they’re not fighting over state rights. I mean, they shut down gun and ammo stores, claiming they weren’t essential! They literally took away our right to bear arms, and no ones protesting about that. I guess our priorities have changed this century.

This is an actual fact. I was waiting for food, and just walked in the place and 4 young black men started giggling like some lil girls. Then I, using my super black man drama hearing, heard them commenting on my shoes and jeans or something. That’s when I literally logged into my middle and high school roast training and spotted: all these fools, had on tiny army workout pants in public, two of them shirt was faded, 3 of them were visibly gray/ashy as the gross sisters and None of them had on new shoes... I started laughing softly to myself... Safe to say, none of them tried me, for their sakes... cause I was about to flame they ass in front of the whole 9 people allowed in the place.

I am really happy that they removed the Gone with the wind. I read the book of gone with the wind when I was a 12 year old living in Iran and never seen a black person in real life back then. And that book gave me a really negative idea about black people that remained for few years in my mind until I read about racism. Well, at that time we didn't have youtube and google and social media, so the information weren't easily accessible. But still, I think this is bad when a book gives such negative and racists views to a kid who has no presumption about it from before. That means there is something wrong with that book!

The book wasnt the issue. The times were. We weren't considered people then. It's a horrible depiction of black people but I don't think they should remove it. They need to acknowledge it. They knew what they were doing. That's what they're adding a conversation about it FINALLY.

Fun anecdote regarding updating dictionaries. About 20 years ago I was at a local library, and the librarian had gathered-up every dictionary in the place. She was sorting through them, and setting them in separate piles after only a brief look. After I asked what she was doing, she explained she was getting rid of old ones by checking the entry for the word 'mouse'. If it only defined the rodent, it was dumped. If it also defined the computer accessory, it stayed.

@@shindean When people think of slaves as having a "good time", they are often misled by how Southern plantation owners would compare their systems to Roman villas and the Roman system of slavery. This is partly because the neoclassicism movement had such a large impact upon the early US, so comparisons with Rome were seen as classy, and partly because there's a perception that Roman slavery was, in places, benevolent, and so Southern slavery could be as well. (Of course, most of our record of the benevolence of Roman slavery were from people who owned slaves or people who wrote entertainment and wished to leverage the "happy slave" trope - a modern example would be kzbin.info/www/bejne/qX7Vm5ibn9J2pqs - and, of course, if you then consider the number of slave revolts that Rome experienced over the years, you can then see that there's some dishonesty going on about how happy slaves were.) The argument went that if Southern plantations were like Roman villas (they weren't) and Roman slaves were well-treated (they weren't), then Southern slaves could also have a "good time" (which, of course, they couldn't).
@chrispasch4143
@chrispasch4143 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Many lost causers will say, well slaves came back to the plantation after the war, or they stayed and continued "fighting" for the South after Gettysburg. Thats how you know it wasn't all bad! The people making those claims are only reading Lost Cause nostalgia narratives and looking at cropped photos from the period. All the WPA narratives and letters from slaves spoke to the fear of leaving family who are spread out a cross multiple plantations, fear of punishment for themselves and family/friends, and not to mention those places were still their homes that they built and knew. Yes some slaves were treated fairly well, but you nailed it: but it was all done to maintain the system of robbing others of their most basic of freedoms.
