(Edit: I googled her story and she walked clean past the checkouts on each location, so maybe not.) But, I think they let her go to a felony because a misdemeanor isn't worth the trouble of prosecuting. Plus, they can show a pattern as opposed to a one-off, making a conviction more likely.

Secondly for store theft most of time when the theft has escalated the thief is caught and goods return when it’s expensive items. Target monitors their stores meticulously. If you steal today don’t think they don’t know. What affects retailers are their operational activities and management. Ever wonder what happens to those goods strewn all over the interstate when commercial trucks are accidents? How about at the retailers facility can they get it unloaded without significant damage? What about on the conveyor lines, at the packing stations and around the facility are goods handled with care? there is theft at the retailers warehouses as well. There the theft is done in bulk compared to piece items sold in stores. Remember at warehouses the items are staged on pallets or shelves in cases. Are they wasting packaging materials warehouse and in store? Ever wonder why the stores sometimes stop offering plastic bags when you purchase items. That cost money it’s not because they want to save the earth. Retail theft by customers does not cause an increased in retail prices at least for me at medium to large retail establishments.

If you get caught as a form of surprise, your mind wouldn't know how to react to this unexpected situation. Also, after the slow realization that you have been caught, your mind races in thousand different directions. The overwhelming sense of fear is from the embarrassment that you'd have to face to people whom you know. The stress is also compounded by the fact that she has been monitored shoplifting multiple times. Now that she has been caught, she regrets the fact that her stupid decision has led to this embarrassing situation. I think the fear is much about how the people would think about her, especially the ones that she knows and interact with on daily basis. She is clearly thinking of all the negative repercussions of shoplifting and this has had a profound change in her heartbeat and breathing. When your primary focus is one thing, nothing else matters. A guy I went to high school with is a doctor. Guy always had his head in the books. In high school when i was doing sports, hanging out with friends, playing video games, working part time he was hitting the books. He actually showed up to a get together, marriage type meet up with family and friends about 12 years after high school. He's a doctor. People had iPhones and androids, he didn't know about all that stuff. He had a phone but he wasn't into apps and social media. Someone asked him to reach the HDMI cord so they could plug their laptop into a TV for a photo playlist and he didn't know what an HDMI cord was. People were talking about marvel movies, he hadn't seen any of them but vaguely remembered some from when he was a child. He didn't know celebrities or memes, video games, movies and television, even what we consider basic tech, tablets and phones. But he knows his stuff as a doctor.

I have to say I am not a fan of people losing their employment and setting them up for failure. It just keeps them locked-in to a criminal lifestyle. Crime/punishment should be dealt with separately. A person's debt shouldn't have to follow them after they have paid their debt to society. And this is where redemption and forgiveness come into play. The jail and prison system are basically an industry that profits from societal judgment.

I think for some people it’s the rush or thrill of trying to get away with it. I was at target when my three kids were all very little….one of them was in an umbrella stroller. I had a few items in a basket and hung a pair of flip flops around the handle of the stroller. I got all the way out to the car after paying and 2 of the 3 kids were in the car. When I went to take my littlest one out of the stroller I saw the flip flops and realized I didn’t pay for them! I got everyone out of the car and back in the store to correct my mistake….I wouldn’t have been able to sleep that night if I didn’t.

It's a hobby or a sport for her. Many of these people are well situated financially, so there are mental issues at play here. Wonder what other areas she is dishonest in? I think the court gave her a break on not charging her with a felony because they know she would lose her licence to practice for dishonorable conduct if she had a felony charge.
