I use to freelance with authors, but now I work only with publishers. When I was freelancing, I would do sample edits. If someone handed me something that wasn’t ready for the phase of editing we were doing, like wanting a proof without having any copy editing and filled with countless mistakes, I would decline to work with that client. It cost neither of us anything. But, if someone isn’t ready to be in the phase of editing submitted, including never having been self-edited, it is going to cost a ton more, because the amount of time. I’m not going to do so much additional work that my normal fees would give me less than min wage, nor do I want to break an author’s budget. So, it was always best to decline. So, this video is very important, because an author could be charged more or declined service if they pick the wrong type of editing.

Thank you so much for creating this video and explaining in detail the differences between copy editing and proofreading. Your explanations were clear and thorough, making it easy for viewers to understand the nuances between these two crucial processes. The practical advice for self-published authors was particularly helpful, and your expertise in the field shines through. I believe there are expressions similar to "some people think that a copy editor is comparable to an advanced spell checker." Given that every copy editor is prone to errors in editing text, including instances of being less thorough in editing manuscripts, it's possible that some words might be overlooked during the text editing process. Overall, it's a valuable resource, and I appreciate the effort you put into sharing your knowledge.

I love how you contrast editing and proofreading. There are some KZbinrs telling their viewers they are the same. Moreover, I am also happy that you emphasized that no one is perfect. I am an educator, and I have found errors in textbooks as well as software grammar checkers such as Grammarly, Ginger, Wordtune, etc... I found so many I felt compelled to contact them regarding their errors. However, we educators had a phone number and an email to report textbook errors. They used to reward us for reporting errors. I am not sure whether they still do; I no longer teach public school.

The book will be 5.5 x 8.5 approx, 200 plus pages. I have prepared this in a word document. I am pretty clear with how I need to edit and format, but am wondering if you have help regarding how to insert the art that the artist is preparing. I will need to reformat some of the stories to accommodate her art. To submit this for publishing, do I insert the art or is that done by the publisher? I am confused on what I need to do.

My question is, how does incorporating ones dialect affect ones writing, and how can you help me in teams of editing and possibly publishing if you find it worthy?
@Lilylilie3 жыл бұрын
Hey Natalia! I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this and if you still check the comments under this video but I will try reaching you this way. I am in the editing stage of my first book and I am starting to plan how I will publish it and that includes professional editing (btw this video was exactly what I needed to figure out where I want to spend money when it comes to professional editing, so thank you!) I have been following you for some time now and read some of your work so I am pretty confident that I would trust you (and the people you chose to work with) with copy-editing my book. I don't know exactly when I will be ready for that but it will hopefully be in 3 months. So my question: when should I reach out to enchanted ink publishing? I know you guys are pretty full at the moment so I wanted to ask if I should reach out earlier than the three months that are suggested? Should I wait until I know when I will be ready for copy editing? Or is your plan so full that telling you now would be best because I have to wait for more than 5 months anyway? I don't mind waiting but I don't want to waste time that was not necessary to waste. Like mentioned it is my first book and I want to do things right, but also I am very excited about publishing it. Sorry if this question is unnecessarily long, I tend to overthink things.

Hello. How detailed does a beta reader need to go vs how far some do go? I've started a beta reading gig and I've gotten 5 start ratings, but I'm wondering if I'm going to far. I do a few line comments, answer any questions they have, and I continue with detailed comments about other things that stood out that could use improvement. I also make sure to leave positive comments as well.

Can we, proofreaders, explain to authors that there's a different approach to different kinds of edits because a lot of them don't know YET what they're differences are? I am a proofreader and when I ask them "Has it been through copyediting?", some will just respond "just do what you gotta do", without any style sheet sent to me, which makes me scratch my head. I only offer a proofreading service. The problem is we already agreed on the price and they only paid me for the hours when I should be paid per word for the kind of service they want from me. I should've declined but I'm afraid that the client won't employ me again.
