I'm doing a diploma in copy editing and proofreading (just a few months away now from certification). Not sure if it's perhaps a UK/US difference but in my training, what you have decribed the line editor (we dont use the term line editor) as doing is what a copy editor does, and what you describe the copy editor as doing is more like what a proofreader actually does. There is also much more to both roles than you've covered.

For me, it's really copy vs. Structural that always get me. Another thing i might add is just that the level of querying is usually higher for a copyeditor. Line edits tend to come with a bit more freedom to make choices in my experience.

This might be a difference between industry interpretations of editing. In journalism, "line editing" doesn't exist. The copyeditor is the line editor. What she defined as copyediting is actually the proofreader. But this was helpful in understanding the book industry's interpretation of a line editor that would be the copyeditor in the journalism industry.

Wow- when I edit I always do both line and copy editing and thought they were the same thing! I also find it ironic how 'line' editing is actually looking at the text more holistically. You'd think, from the name, I'd be editing... line by line?

@@AlexCattoni I'm an editor and proofreader. No, copy editing (or copyediting in book publishing) is NOT the same as proofreading. Copy editing comes BEFORE proofreading. Proofreading is the final step. Copy refers to a written material or draft, while a proof is the formatted or typeset copy. Proofreading checks for errors missed during copy editing and new errors introduced during formatting or typesetting. Proofreading also focuses on the design aspects: line breaks, spacing, and other layout inconsistencies (issues with fonts, images, headers, footers, page numbering, etc.). However, you're spot on when it comes to the descriptions of line editing and copy editing. I normally combine line editing and copy editing (or, again, copyediting) since we also naturally take into consideration spelling, grammar, etc. when writing sentences.

@310H.Raised They're NOT one and the same. See my reply to Alex.
