If it is a simple, repetitive pattern, a textured rolling pin works wonders on foam! You will have your pattern in seconds.

@@nyteraven66 yes, but the laser cutter allows for a complex, non-repeating pattern that a rolling pin would not be able to do.

Jesus Christ, look at that detail. This is revolutionary, in terms of terrain crafting. A real game changer. This would work wonders on fantasy terrain. Wall murals derived from ancient stone carvings or medieval paintings. Walls of hieroglyphics. Arabic/Persian/Iberian geometric designs. Baroque or Art Nouveau images based on natural forms. There are so many styles to replicate, it's insane. Consider also that the EVA foam is flexible. Meaning you can etch a pattern and then adhere it over a curved surface. Wrap it around a column. With the proper planning and cuts, you might even be able to work it around a round surface like a dome.

Switching to craft-foam was a really smart idea. Have you tried using a vector-graphic file type, like .svg, to avoid/reduce pixelation in the engraved images; or does Lizzie not allow for that?

Yeah you can import svg or dxf and it will use that pattern instead of pixelating it

I wonder if you could use that fabric-backed vinyl you can buy by the yard, and make maps or mats?? It would beat the heck out of making your own from caulk and tarps. Or, for tiles, it might be possible to use floor tiles, or even ceramic tiles. I doubt the ceramic would work well, but unglazed might work.

Nice one! They came out great. I'm sensing a sci-fi battlefield mat V2 project coming :P I was looking at making 'urban floor tiles' on MDF some years back through engraving services but it was prohibitively expensive. I'd genuinely not thought about trying EVA foam on my cheap laser (that also struggles with wood), a brilliant idea. SDS' for EVA products they mention low levels of 'irritating gasses' (hydrogen bromide) when burned so it's worth having some ventilation where you're lasering and keeping pets away (it looks like you do already, just a heads up for others)

You could do some beautiful 3D (layered) heraldry with that EVA foam on the laser printer, I'd imagine. Some really good stuff for Imperial Knights, for example. I mean, there are a LOT of possible applications. Even things like architectural reliefs and panels become more feasible. Lattice work using construction paper for more delicate builds, maybe? Will it cut super-thin brass sheet? That would open up a whole new range of possibilities.

You could print a lot of cobblestone roads and just roll the out in any configuration if you just want a road on a battlemat. Or just print large sheets and make a whole city! I would love to have that machine, but I don’t think we have eva-foam in Sweden.

I’ve thought for a while now that more KZbin terrain builders should try “engraving” or “etching” acrylic or polycarbonate (PS some of this stuff is super dangerous to laser cut/carve if done improperly - like mustard gas type dangerous). Be careful but etched acrylic combined with some lights and maybe some washes you could make some interesting signs, command markers, portals, “holograms,” etc. You can do it with a dremel but the precision and repeatability of a laser cutter is awesome. It might be worth looking at some videos of people who made light up swords, homemade lightsabers, and such. You could really set a new standard with your graphic design and prototyping skills! Just be careful.
