I've been using poundshop brown acrylic frame sealant mixed with sand and a little water as a basing texture for a few years now. For stony ground I add some bird grit into the mix; for swamp terrain bases I added some black paint to darken it and some dried herbs to give the impression of rotting vegetation.

A while back, my local Michaels had some "non-slip grit additive" in a jar, for a big discount. I experimented with it in texture paint. It worked pretty well, mixed with PVA and paint. I also added some fairly large grit sand, for added texture. I've mostly done it as texture prior to priming models, but it worked decently well on its own from my experiments. I've also acquired a kind of snow effect paste ("Snow-Tex" from DecoArt), but I haven't yet tried it out.

I've found that egg shells can make for really cool bases as well. I take the egg shells, put them in a jar with a lid (usually it's a Homepride Pasta bake jar 😂) and shake until I get the size I want. Then I mix the egg shell with P.V.A. glue and slap it on the base. Prime, paint. Done. If I'm after a pointy ground effect I wait for the glue to dry a bit then place some larger bits of egg shell where I want them. It's an interesting look.

Basically whatever you do just don't buy citadel and it's fine. Agrellan earth is 7.80€ for 24 ML pot and GSW Mojave Mudcrack is about 5.50€ for 60 ML bottle. There's very little difference in performance but GSW doesn't chip off as easily so it's little bit better. Vallejo texture paints are far more durable than citadel ones and come in 200ml tubs which cost about 9.50€. 24ml bottle of Astrogranite is 7.80€ so you get about 8 times more texture paint for same amount of money when buying Vallejo.

For rust effects on a board you could probably get thin iron sheet which is dirt cheap and coat it in vinegar and salt mixture. It’s lightweight and you get a real rust effect.

Love the moss effect best. The rust looks very effective (though people tend to overdo the orange). I'll probably give the wall filler ground paste a go, I assume you can mix up a whole container with acrylic paint and sand and keep the lid on to keep it from setting, as long as you don't add the PVA?
@alfredpotts6136
@alfredpotts6136 2 жыл бұрын
You can even add the PVA. As long as the lid is on tight, should last for ages. I have some texture paint I made 18+ months ago stored in a clip top yoghurt pot and it’s still fine.

"Texture" and "Dry" are a complete waste of money. Mainly because they DRY up... If only I had used them up by then. An empty pot is usually an indicator of a good paint. Quite annoying when products are made and sold not to last... I have coffee beans that have been fresh longer. The GW pots are not tight enough by far.

For rust effect I have found that a layer of a dark red brown dry pigment with a lighter orange dry pigments gives great results. And it's wicked cheap if you buy some artist pastel chalk sticks. Like $25 for every color you could ever need and the sandpaper to process it down to a powder.

I'll keep the mud texture in mind when I run out of the store bought stuff. My dioramas are fairly small so that stuff should last for at least 12-15 of them. A lot of my dioramas show a lot of raw sand or earth. The moss? Love it. I might give the rust a try, but it'd have to be super fine powder mixed in. I go out in the world and collect coffee cans full of dirt from construction sites, and after sieving them, I get a very fine powder. I'll give it a whirl.

Cool vid. Must say I’m definitely a fan of the Golden products you showed inside the Skillshare section. Their texture mediums are truly amazing. However, one thing which always amazes me is how just the slush from my washed paint brushes, either with a little gesso or matte medium also gives the most amazing effects. With water added suddenly you have amazing pin washes for scraps. And so indeed we can go and on and on. Definitely will try the eggshells I saw mentioned further up in the comments. So, yes, got some favorites, but simple screwing around and experimenting is indeed the utmost favorite of ‘m all. Thanks 🙏 for sharing.

Honestly I've never used any factory made texture paints or coverings. I've always just mixed stuff up. But I've used sand, kitty litter, corn meal, crushed stone, aquarium gravel, rocks and dirt from outside, baking soda, coffee grounds, and anything else that I have ever thought of. And basically mixed it into glue or paint, or both. I've also just put glue on a base and shook stuff on. I've always felt the pre-made texture paints were too expensive for the amount you got. And I'm glad you shared these recipes with us. I'd rather just make my own. Especially since it would be about an hour ordeal to drive my closest shop that carries pre-made texture paints, buy it, and drive back. Most of the stuff I use can be purchased at a closer shop in 10 minutes if I don't screw around looking at other stuff in the shop. And can be bought cheaper and in bigger abundance.
