I made a boat! It's actually a model ship... 1:72 scale, and I converted, hacked and kitbashed it straight into the Disney Movie: Treasure Planet, full of space pirates, aliens and cyborgs.
The kit I used is the Airfix 1:72 Golden Hind from 1977. The box I got came with a rigging tool as well for the rat lines.

You are correct! In "Treasure Planet" the ship we spend the majority of our time on (the R.L.S. Legacy after the author of "Treasure Island", Robert Louis Stevenson) has a fairly unique version of solar sails. In the film, the sails act as a method of gathering the energy of photons and turning it into the variety of energy needed to power the ship's engines, so that when they are out of reach of strong enough sun/starlight they aren't dead in space. The more light strikes the sails, the more power goes directly to the engines. A very fun bit of science fiction, and honestly one of my favorite depictions of space ships. Your sister ship is a beautiful piece, and as usual, your imagination and creativity are amazing to watch turn from idea into reality. Thank you so much for sharing your work and love of the hobby with all of us and inspiring more nerds to try our hands at crazy ideas.

I often liked how relatively early Disney was playing with themes from anime. Not really Disney but the two guys behind the TP project. Sorry, Knarb but I think a miss by not modeling the scalloped sails design. This is repeated in the sail the launch uses. I encourage people to read up on why the movie failed and it's planned sequel scrapped. I so enjoyed this movie close to my heart. My old man gifted me a 1st Ed. hardback of Treasure Island. One of my few beloved items. Semper Fi old man :)

No lie Treasure Planet is my favourite film, everything from the cast to the music to the animation is top notch. It was stuck in production hell for like 8 years before finally greenlit. One of the last Disney films to use 2D animation and was the last film to use their Deep Canvas engine to blend 2D and 3D elements and scenes, developed originally for Tarzan for the tree surfing scenes it was used for the whole runtime and used it to its limit. That ship fits in beautifuly and I can absolutely see Jim Pleiades Hawkins captaining her through the etherium winds.

I think that many Airfix molds tend to be pretty ancient, making them prone to flash and warping. This model looks excellent. I like that you've mounted at flags blowing in the wind; as the ship is under sail; rather than trailing behind the mast, as if the ship was under power.

I absolutely adore this project, and Treasure Planet is quite possibly my favourite Disney movie. A sadly underrated gem. My sole criticism is perhaps that the bow of the ship is a little light on the more steampunk aspects. Perhaps an ornate figurehead or ram would balance it out more with the rear, or what about an intricate cannon, like we saw in the movie, on top of the forecastle?
@modelermark172
@modelermark172 Жыл бұрын
I always thought the movie "Treasure Planet" was an underrated gem, with lots of cool spaceships unlike anything else in Science Fiction, and you did a very good job capturing the movie's overall "look and feel" with your model. I hope this will be the start of a series of models set in a Science Fiction version of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" milieu; kind of like Boylei's iconic "Wild Imaginary West" series. (Where did you get those space pirate figures, by the way . . . ?) As an aside, I would imagine that any galactic civilization advanced enough to build warp-driven starships that look like 17th Century Tall Ships would be nobody to mess with. Even the Borg and the Daleks would be advised to pass them up . . . .

Treasure Planet was another failure by Disney to properly market a really good movie... Much like "John Carter" (that title says it all; what happened to the "Warlord of Mars" part?), it could've done much better had Das Maus Reich actually promoted it properly. Speaking of John Carter, there's a lot of material there for mining modeling projects... =^[.]^=

@@KnarbMakes Thanks, but I don't have access to a 3D Printer, much less the ability to write software or code to make use of one. (Heck, I never even got a Dremel Tool.) That said, I've been building models for over half a century now, and I hope to build many more before I can't. For now, I'll tell you what I told Boylei: Keep up the good work - not just your actual building, but but also keeping the hobby alive and well into the next generation!

It's worth looking into if using something like petroleum jelly or oil can be used to prevent the glue sticking to smooth plastic, I know it can work pretty well as a mold release for more unconventional mold materials which are not silicone, otherwise really great build!

pretty good on the rigging. the way you had the furled sails lashed down is definitely off, and i would've jury-rigged an entirely new set of chain-plates for the mainmast shrouds rather than having them go at that very weird angle. THANK YOU for having the flags go the right way though, that's huge.

I can't speak for the actual reason given in the film, but I always figured it was to catch either solar winds or literally just light. Which does sound super sci-fi, but people are already working on making that kind of thing practical for deep space probes and stuff.

Amazing job! I use the same method to make the sails, but... I just use the plastic sails as a template to make the tissue paper ones. I apply a coat of Vaseline over the plastic sails and place the paper over them, then apply white glue and wait for it to dry. So they get thinner which is better for the scale. They come out easy and then you can give them the shape you want... for more folds or kneads as you like. Cheers
