FR. I used to read some of those and eventually got to the point where I forgot who was who, didn’t care about any of the characters, couldn’t remember any of their backstories, they all had the same plot so I sometimes misremembered things not even remembering it’s slightly different and that thing I remember was from a different similar story. I’m not even a fan of romance, I always scrolled past any kissing scenes or other… stuff. Always made me uncomfortable I was just there for the drama and I liked the concept originally of a reincarnated character and all that. But when they all had the same garbage plot and nothing good even happened, it got so tiring and I usually only read like 3 chapters before getting bored. I also hate how fast they’d fall in love sometimes. Literally saw one where they just met and got married in the span of about 5 chapters, the guy was obsessed with her which is always annoying to read ngl, and I dropped it so fast

Most of the time it's genenly hard to tell which country or time period it's suposed to be. Not to mention that the rulers usually don't really rule, or just veary short court meetings. Honestly I think the title and opening chapter are to hook the people who want to see the basic copy-paste stories and then later on when we revisit the opening flash-forward scene, it's put in the context of the in-law characters putting on a show for the public to know that they fully support the FL, so it's a kind of a bait-and-switch situation.

as a webcomic artist who posts on webtoons and Tapas, I can say that their algorithm makes it very unmotivating to make anything that isn't romance and/or smut. Especially if it's not a BL or GL. I personally do have a BL comic but it's more of a natural introduction. The focus isn't exactly the romance but it's supposed to build up and focus more on the paranormal (I unfortunately had to give the story to a friend and have them write it for me, and another friend draw it). Meanwhile when it comes to action, if it's not super action packed every single scene it won't gain traction, even if the art is good. I'm still not used to writing stories so I'm always reading the comments for any criticism, but it's SO HARD when you're not even getting any attention in the first place, so you have to learn the hardest way possible.

I mean I want things like Melvina's Therapy and Shriek. Unfortunately, so many horror comics on Webtoon are not really scary. It sucks because series like Shriek, Horang's Nightmares and Unkown Caller really take the digital nature of Webtoons to add in animations and sound to elevate the horror, but that's not what we get. We get romance with some spookiness. Blegh.

while most originals disappoint me, there are still a rare few that are honest masterpieces and deserve love and support, these are often hidden too so ill make a list of some i personally love. Here There Be Dragons: has a diverse and immersive group of characters, literally every single one has flaws, personality, a fitting group dynamic, emotional depth. and all of it is set in original and fantastical world building. (highly recommend)(very LGBTQ+) Nevermore: A more gothic edgy romance centered around edgar allan poe themed lesbians in a mystery. the characters are amazing even the villains are written well. (need i say more?) Homesick: a post-apocalyptic world full of gore, mystery, and some of the most heartwarming and tense moments i've read. it covers some more sensitive topics but handles them in a good way. (this one has a few things i disagree with but i still love it.) Not Even Bones: this one isn't for everyone since the protagonist and love interest are horrible people and make questionable decisions. but that the point of the comic, and i got super invested in the characters and lore. I know this sounds dumb, but have they considered just making a separate platform for the shitty romances? I know it sounds ridiculous but listen for a second I recall in matty bites video on "cry or better yet beg" the naver company owns webtoon, yonder, and wattpad and if I remember this right, they have a south korean version of webtoon so why can't they just make a separate platform called "webtoon romance" or something like I know going on tapas or staying on canvas is the better option for an artist and writer but I guess I'm looking for a better solution for naver? The whole romance thing to me kind of fucks with me because it feels like it discourages artists to do stories for webtoon (that they like) and not what the artist wants But that's just my opinion on this whole thing
@baguettedevourer2 ай бұрын
I think you definetly have a point about how seeing so many crappy romance webtoons succeed where more inspired works get left behind can discourage new artists, however I think having an entire seperate platform is a bit overkill. I think the ability for people to read and engage with both romance and other genres such as action and thriller all on the same platform is one of the biggest strengths of webtoon and similar apps. I honestly feel that cross-reading is the best way to broaden peoples horizons and introduce them to something they previously thought they wouldn't like. The people who already enjoy reading the romance stories will just download the romance only app and have less opportunities to engage with more diverse stories. Additionally, making a different app might encourage webtoon to continue to push these copy-paste stories instead of encouraging new ideas, and even take away even more attention from less popular creators. The best way to combat webtoons romance slop is to continue to support creators who make more creative works, and encourage others to do the same. Maybe instead webtoon should implement a genre filter for those who want it, or even have a better reccomndation system where it focuses more on the content of the story rather then continually pushing the same genre over and over again to the same person. Ex. This romance comic has a revenge plot and a main character who wants to invent new ways to protect their friends and family while living happily ever after despite a rough past ----> Lets reccomend a mystery comic where the main character was wronged in the past and turns to inventions/forensic investigation to not only find who did the crime, but also to grow as a character who works to keep their friends and family safe from further strife. (I hope my tone didn't come off a rude as I just wanted to open a discussion to solutions T^T. I think you're idea absolutely has some merit)

I think that's because it's an adaptation of a popular Webnovel. It wasn't made for Webtoon's romance-centred audience, instead more suited to Webnovel's ("male") audience of cultivation stories and power fantasies. (Webnovel pushes gender-specific genres so those for a "female" audience is the same romance slop as Webtoon.) Those aren't common at all on Webtoon, hence making Omniscient Reader look really unique on that platform. I love Omniscient Reader, I do think it's pretty unique. I'm just pointing out an observation that makes it different from other Webtoon Originals.

I like romance alright. But if every story revolves around reincarnation, regression or transmigration and the duke/knight - princess pairing, it's getting boring real fast. Of the entire catalogue of webtoon, I only kept Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (the masterpiece of all masterpieces), Schoolbus Graveyard, and Greatest Estate Developer in my library (and sometimes Merryweather comics because sometimes his works is a hit. JUST SOMETIMES. I like Clinic of Horrors, don't blame me.) Everything else, I could probably already predict the entire plot upon reading the summary. Word for word. Sometimes, it's lowkey an insult on my writer pride. Because how on earth can people consume such sloppy content over and over again? There's no twist, no nothing on it. Cliches are fun to play with, but if you simply just use them again and again with zero substance added, it's so TERRIBLY BORING.

I've seen LOTS of copy-paste media so I can wholeheartedly agree about Webtoon's laziness when it comes to content based on genre. I've seen webcomics on Google Images and TV Tropes that have interesting stories and unique art styles which Webtoon ignore in favor of nsfw romance slop

Its really sad too, i remember Webtoons in 2016 where there was a ton of originality, and the romance series we did get, like Winter Woods and Super Secret, would have something that play with the rules of their respective worlds to bring the leads together It wasn't until the boom of Otome Isekai that the platform changed because a lot of well written ones that expand upon the tropes are owned by their competitor, Kakao/Tapas, and Webtoons pretty much had the leftovers and the actual non-trending romances have to conform with the trending romances as a way to not get dropped....its just sad 😔

What comes to the "Empress's Two Wolves" I have seen that webtoon on other sites with way better and more unique covers, and like, to give credit... The story is interesting despite the generic cover of the webtoon. I do think that a partial problem is how the site advertises webtoons, they saw that one type of cover "sells" so they try to recreate that formula over and over not realising that it makes everything in the long run look generic.

I agree with you on the point that romance comics on webtoon are inbreed and flooding the place. They are often filled with problematic, shock value, cheesy and toxic tropes that appeal towards girls. But i have no idea why you say estrogen dopamine. I get it if you are talking about the readers being female, but other than that estrogen is not something the brain releases and does not really have a direct affect on someones emotios like dopamine or serotonin. I dont mean to complain it just kinda confused me lol

I have been posting my webcomic (Drama/Fantasy one, with no Romance) almost for a year already, and got featured in Hidden Gems / Staff Picks, however I still have pretty small audience compared to other series. I have really good page views to readers ratio, which means that those who tried to read it mostly liked it, but the main issue is that most visitors don't even go that far. I have already decided to change cover, to make it more "clickable" but there's only that much I can do besides that. Meanwhile I spot some new works in Romance/BL/GL genres that skyrocket to thousands of readers after being featured, going directly to Rising Star and continuing their promotion. I know that my work is not something outstanding, but lately, considering anniversary is approaching, I felt so tired fighting with regular updates and promotion on social media.

I deleted webtoon years ago for this reason. It's an old problem they have unfortunately. Another issue I had was many comics had relationships between adult and minor and somehow nobody cared. Every brain dead fan in the comment sections were just like "omg hes so hot!!!" Like be so serious this guy met this girl as a 7 year old kid then when she grows up they date and they're the protagonists? Be so fr.

THIS!! when i saw the thumbnail i literally agreed immediately. when it was released on webtoon the other day i saw both savage proposal and empress 2 wolves and thought "why does this keep popping up" and clicked on savage proposal and saw its... low rating, nosed at the preview and moved on. it took me a day to realise they were different when i went back to see if the rating for savage proposal has improved or worsened but i checked the other one without realising and saw "oh so it might be good the ratings improved" went to properly read it, i audibly said "oh wait theyre different comics" and then i actually went to savage proposal saw them together and theyre almost identical. (savage proposal barely changed rating LOLL)

As a long time manhwa reader, I remembered using Webtoon in the early days, when there were a lot more variety of genres there. I no longer use official manhwa apps since they're no longer very "free", so I turned to random recommendations I get on social media and the various recommended stuff I'd get from websites where you can read manhwas for free. Since then a lot of the genres I've been consuming are those with some form of nobility as a setting and there's always some form of romance on top of it. A lot of the times, they are absolutely boring and use the same tropes and I've never considered how copy-paste-y they are until this video (down to the cover art even). While some are absolute gems, a lot of them are really shit in terms of either plot, character, or both. I like to think of it like viewing the isekai genre in anime (funny enough, isekai, regression, and reincarnation are also settings that are used often in these manhwas). As in, as long as they can execute it well, it's still a good story in the end. After seeing this video, I didn't know how bad it's actually getting. I thought the recommended stuff in these free websites were meh enough or a 50/50 coin flip. Didn't think they'd start publishing content that aren't supposed to be there. I'm probably not going to blame the author/artist. I don't know their situation but I feel bad if this is the only way they're ever going to get their bills paid. It's like having their creative potential stripped from them and they're forced to output the same thing just to get by.

I fr have an idea for a comic that i've been working on and one that i have published but i know that neither will do well because of how unique the ideas and premises are. As for the unpublished one, i'm putting too much effort into it to the point that i learned to draw in two different artstyles just for it's sake but i still know the only way for me to get eyes on it is to promote it outside of webtoon which i have no idea how to do. The though of making a copy paste webtoon has crossed my mind many times tbh because I know it'll be easier to draw and get more views and attention but I really want my weird story ideas out there with my unnecessary blingy art.

Comments throughout the video I'll add here: 3:32 This tactic itself isn't BAD. Keeping the audience hooked on your story and what will happen next isn't a sign that the webtoon is bad, its when its the only that is has going for it. Seokwoo's webtoons are a good example of this, because even though that have this, they still hold themselves up by substance. 4:45 Good time to talk about Khephera, really good scifi war webtoon.

I know this is an old webtoon, but if you want fun story I would recommend "I don't want this kind of hero" it's a really good story packed with humors and interesting characters. It's old and already finished in 200 chapters. Old gold in Webtoon is the only reason it could stand the way it is now. It is not famous like other webtoon OGs from years ago but it is a good story to spend your time with. Brief summary: it tells a story about a 'normal' highschool student, Naga, with too much power for his own good, being recruited into a 'hero' organization that handles cases outside the police force's scope. The world is a mix of modern with fantasy element such as hybrid humans, people with powers or deals with the devils. Naga is your standard OP MC who is only comfortable using his power for mundane things.

I always thought that instead of having new stuff coming out every week that is too often the same boring trash action or romance reincarnation comic they could just advertise more finished ones or other currently running ones. Without all of these they'd have the time and space to promote more stuff that they usually don't as much and also the ressources could be focused on making sure the authors are not mistreated. I do find that you always only talk about the romance ones but honestly the action copy pastes of solo leveling/orv/revenge stories are just as bad if not worse in quantity, they're just really slightly less promoted on webtoon (tho other apps do push them just as much) and often have extremely problematic content in them too (racism, misogyny, actual plagiarism scandals, barely disguised gross fetishes, the way they approach slavery, the ones that want to be "edgy" with humanoid monsters (or even just to show a guild is evil bam they all 🍇 women) that 🍇 women to reproduce that are almost explicitly shown half the time... maybe this should go into barely disguised fetish... maybe even racism, etc...) on top of being copy pasted slop with the worst use of assets you've ever seen and mcs that all look the exact same 😭

The huge problem with a lot of these similar looking ones is the feeling of wasting time, especially when the actual romance doesn't go anywhere until the last 15 episodes. I also struggle to get into some of these new webtoons because they go too hard on the world plot paragraphs immediately instead of introducing the characters and why I should care about reading about that world. Can you talk about the weird surge of established comics randomly getting a new art style between either breaks or seasons? Not that it's bad for many but some you read because of the art style then it just...changes in the middle of the story? It's super polarizing for some comics, even subtle changes like the recently changed "a martial master wakes up as a concubine" with an entire new art team (the old one seems to be gone) or even "when the third wheel strikes back" changing between seasons. There's plenty that have been doing it but it's just weird that it's becoming more common? Sometimes it's really nice and looks like the old style but improved, other times it starts taking me out of the story. I'd just like someone more well spoken to open this topic up more and analyze it.

And i actually liked freaking romance, it was the first time i saw that olot premice

OMG YES LICO STUDIOS! One of my first and favourite webtoons when I started back in 2018 was Refund Highschool! Reading their newer work Return of the Blossoming Blade. Other creators I recommend are Seokwoo's Days of Hana (sobbed like a baby) and Quimchee I Love Yoo. WEBTOON tried marketing ILY as a romance, misleading readers who read for romance when the story is a drama and romance is very much in the background, and very slow bc of what actually goes in the story. Hell, webtoons tried getting Quim to have another male character that's in the story, as a "second love interest" or more "romantic scenes" with him😒 thankfully she has refused since, and continues to make her story HER way as she intended. Webtoon still fucks with the system though, cutting long chapters into shorter ones, so they end up ruining the pacing of the story as Quim says those long chapters NEED to be intact cuz that's how SHE wants it told. Quim has gone on hiatuses and little strikes just to get new contracts and negotiate conditions with webtoon over stuff like that (they STILL split the longer chapters, ffs)
