I always feel like the "They didn't bring over the REAL SMB2 because it was too hard" may be a bit unfair to Nintendo. Especially since just as much as that I've heard it being because SMB2 is just kind of a hard mode level expansion pack to SMB1 with mostly the same mechanics just amped up. And when they're trying to help keep up the resurgence of home consoles that the NES and SMB helped then going back to repetition and making it kinda go "Wait why is this a separate new game" wasn't the way to do so
@crazydud33804 жыл бұрын
The real SMB2 is actually Nintendo's most poorly designed 2D Mario, with a lot of cheap deaths reminiscent of Mario Maker levels. The SMB2 we got was actually the better game, and influenced future games, so no, it counts.
@JoeMama4104 жыл бұрын
Doki Doki Panic was heavily influenced by SMB and the designers were trying to build off SMB mechanics, so the reskin isn’t really that big of a change.
@jamessnedeker47992 жыл бұрын
The hardness was some of the explanation but not the full story. It was an unenjoyable hard and Howard Lincoln spoke up about this. The US was also just bouncing back from the video game crash of '83 and didn't want to push it back in with a tweaked, inferior version of SMB1. I also never really understood the hatred about SMB2 being different. It's a lot closer to SMB1 than SMB1 is to Mario Bros.

01:36 that's a misconception, it was either Nintendo of America or Nintendo itself who thought the original one was too similar to the predecessor AKA Super Mario Bros and already outdated, so they reskinned Doki Doki Panic that wasn't going to be released anyhow because it was based on anime series unknown to the west. They also had made a prototype of that game containing Mario characters before they used the anime license so it technically WAS a Mario game first.

Actually, there are three Magic (Warp) Whistles in Super Mario Brothers 3. The third, and final, Magic (Warp) Whistle, is obtainable via breaking a rock with a Hammer on the second screen of the World Map in World 2. When you break the Rock with the Hammer, you can uncover a differently colored Mushroom House that can give you the first Frog Suit in the game, and after that point, you come across the only place that you find a Fire Brother confrontation at the end of the little path that you gained access to with breaking the Rock with the Hammer. The Fire Brother is actually one of, if not, THE rarest enemy that you will face in Super Mario Brothers 3, and you only come across it twice in the game, once in the area that I had mentioned, and once in one of the Hand Stages that is in World 8. Moreover, this is the only time in the game in which you will fight a pair of Fire Brothers. Anyway, you simply defeat the Fire Brothers and then you will have the third Magic (Warp) Whistle.

the _only_ negative takeaway from the original SMB is the underwater levels? huh? I can name several issues off the top of my head that all impact gameplay in an extremely negative way. 1. the abuse of hidden blocks makes several levels feel like they were made with the intention of trolling players, as if they were created in mario maker. 2. the controls as a whole haven't aged well. they're way too heavy, inconsistent, and unpolished. if you jump having not yet accelerated to full speed, you won't be able to speed up in midair. 3. the behavior of hammer bros. 4. getting hit as fire mario turns you into small mario. 5. several levels are reused later in the game with very minimal alterations. 6. secret exits aren't hidden well and are overpowered, making them incredibly obvious and easy skips. 7. if you're small and facing against hammer-throwing bowser, you're dead. 8. if you're powered up and facing against bowser, you can't lose. 9. the entirety of world 8. 10. the screen doesn't scroll backwards. 11. getting a game over means you have to start from the very beginning of the game. I don't get why games like these are _still_ being hailed as perfect masterpieces. SMB1 was incredibly influential and important to the gaming industry, but goddamn this game just isn't fun to play at all, and every subsequent game improves on this game's now-blatant flaws, including NSMB2. I have a similar stance regarding mario 64 but I'm not going to repeat myself, and it admittedly has less issues than SMB1. these games aren't flawless, but people keep lying to themselves by saying they are, just because they have to keep up this fantasy that the most revolutionary games are automatically the best and most fun. games _can_ age, people.

Just as a small suggestion one thing that you might do that I think would be interesting is to do a comparison in the differences between the original version of "Doki Doki Panic" and "Super Mario Bros 2(American Version)" as there are some differences in the games and one additional thing you could focus on for this game is the differences between the NES version and the "Game Boy Advanced" version that adds a few things to the game, also I think that one additional bad aspect of the Actual "Super Mario Bros 2 (Japanese Version)" is the warp pipes that send you back to previous levels not to mention the fact that you can overshoot the flag poles in that game where as you can't do so in the first game, and as a recommendation to gamers who play the true sequel on the NES online App for the Switch is that you make use of the frame reverse function that basically allows players to rewind the game which can be very helpful in getting the precision jumps you need to do right without loosing lives and or power ups especially on the world 8-2 level of that game where you have to bounce of a koppa trooper to hit a block which spawns a climbing vine that takes you to the area the flagpole is in to finish the level (mind you that particular part of the game is one of the more interesting parts of the game if you ask me) also one thing that might be an interesting thing to do in the "Mario Maker Series" would be to have all the levels of every game in the Franchise featured in that game plus the Japanese Version of Super Mario Bros 2 with the added function of the edit feature you get when playing story mode but loose a few times which allows players to add things in that make the levels easier to beat which would definitely help when playing the Japanese Version of Super Mario Bros 2, also it would be interesting to have a Mario Maker game where you can switch between the usual mechanic's and the American Version of Super Mario Bros 2 Mechanic's, so if you can do any of my suggestions and or have a way of presenting my ideas to Nintendo please do so and let me know when you do

The worst part of NSMBWii is easily that Nintendo milked its vanilla Mario characters and environments waaaaay too hard, in games that really suffered because of it. IMO later Mario RPGs such as Sticker Star and Paper Jam were absolutely made worse by being so vanilla in NSMBWii's footsteps. It was fine for what NSMB was, but for spinoffs that usually expand the Mario world in more story-driven ways it did nothing but damage. Thankfully at least Dream Team managed to avoid that curse.
@atroopa62884 жыл бұрын
Well that's the thing about Sunshine-- It was actually really rushed. That's why it can be so rough in some areas at times. I'm sure that the game probably would have turned out a near masterpiece like it's sibling games had they actually had the time to flesh everything out. I still love what we got tho for the most part =} And for 3D Land, one thing that most people don't know is that the Koopalings (& Yoshi) were supposed to be in the game originally. The devs used SMB3 as a heavy influencer for the game (which still can be seen plainly) and they wanted to use the Koopalings (+Boom-Boom) as bosses. However, the original 3DS had data issues that prevented it from having as much data that it could have had meaning that it couldn't handle all of the Koopalings' models apparently. So they just reduced it down to using Boom-Boom as the only Koopaling. However, they created Pom-Pom as well just so that Boom-Boom & Bowser weren't the only two bosses in the game. It's unknown how Yoshi would have functioned in the game, but he like the other 7 Koopalings were originally planned to be in 3D Land. I'm happy we were at least able to get Boom-Boom back after missing him return in NSMBWii along with the rest of the Koopalings. =}

@MusicProposition3 жыл бұрын
It’s not uncommon for games to feel bloated and kind of unbalanced in content. I always found it strange that the game has only a handful of really expansive worlds and on the other side many locations that are just embarrassingly small. I do think that 400 moons instead of 999 and more balance in the scope of every kingdom would’ve helped a lot.

The bad negative thing in super mario run in my opinion is you only play world 1 but if you want to continue the story you have to pay real world money to unlock other worlds why couldn't Nintendo unlock worlds if you beat the castles up until the world 6 that would've made the experience much better, it made me mad when I first saw this after beating world 1 castle.

For Galaxy 2, I’d say the worst thing about it is it’s underwhelming final boss. It’s waaaay to easy, and doesn’t even make any sense. He gets hit by 4 meteors and just...runs out of power and shrinks? How does that make sense?

Alright here's my two cents on all these games. Donkey kong-jumping feels a bit awkward thought that usually isnt a problem if you're playing any non 75 m level. Donkey kong jr-come back to me on this one Donkey kong circus-this might just be me being bad at it but I always got pineapples and flames confused. Super mario bros-gonna have to agree on the water levels Super mario bros 2j-wind, mazes that require trial and error, a few instances of needing to jump and find random invisible blocks. Super mario bros 2 everywhere else.-any albatross level. Super mario land-come back to me Super mario world-I got nothing(maybe the reusing boss fights but thats not even a problem) Super mario land two(my personal favorite)-I guess the space zone.(good idea but the hippo level is meh, the first level is actually really fun. The main problems arise on the second level, seeing as its a glorified water level thats home to Tatanga, easily the most infuriating boss in the game.) Super mario 64-the god forsaken 5 itty bitty secrets star(imagine every problem in mario 64×10 rolled into one but put it in a world that is the equivalent of being a real person in lego city barefoot.) Super mario sunshine-watermelon festival(the only mario mission that feels just like a level out of shrek on the xbox) Nsmbwii-other people Super mario 3d land-the depth perception Nsmb2-most things about it Paper mario sticker star-the fact that there is no reward(actually a detriment in most cases) to fighting 3d world-Ka thunk. Just ka thunk Nsmbu-too similar to wii Odyssey-most captures blow I havent played the other ones. Edit 1-added donkey kong circus

My least favorite thing about NSMBU is that it’s the only mainline Mario game without a real reason to exist outside of being a new Mario game for a new system. Every other mainline Mario game has some reason to exist, and thus, it’s own identity, but NSMBU just doesn’t have that.

A note on SMB2(US). While both accurate and well-known that this game was just a made-over version of Doki Doki Panic, it's important to note that it's absolutely a "real" Mario title. First, the game we got was also released in Japan as Super Mario Bros USA. But secondly, and far more importantly, the game that came to be Doki Doki Panic was originally designed to BE a Mario game. In essence, it started as a Mario vehicle; Miyamoto decided to change it to DDP; then it was reskinned as a Mario game again for the US. So it's truly more Mario than Doki. On a final note, if we want to feel "insulted" that the Japanese SMB2 was deemed to difficult for Americans, it's not Nintendo of Japan's fault. That blame primarily goes to Nintendo of America game tester of the time, Howard Philips. Cheers.

Here's my choice for the worst parts of every Zelda game Zelda NES - The lack of direction that makes the game pretty much impossible without a printable map or walkthrough Zelda 2 - The UNFAIR difficulty, especially in the road to the Great Temple, and the Great Temple itself. Link to the Past - The music isn't as diverse as it is in later Zelda games (Hey, I couldn't think of any REAL problems with the game so I had to settle on SOMETHING.) Link's Awakening - The villains don't do nearly as much as other Zelda villains do Ocarina of Time - The second half of the game doesn't feel that magical. I know it's supposed to set a dark tone, but it's possible to be dark while still having cool-looking levels. Majora's Mask - Resetting the 3-day cycle. The 3-day cycle by its own is actually a pretty awesome mechanic, but whenever you have to reset it, it gets annoying. Oracle games - Having to keep swapping items in and out, which gets redundant. I wouldn't mind if this didn't also apply to your sword, dashing and lifting objects. Four Swords - You literally CANNOT play it unless you find THREE OTHER FRIENDS, all with GBAs AND copies of this game. Wind Waker - The sailing, while fun, gets repetitive after a while Four Swords Adventures - They might have made some of the puzzles a bit TOO challenging, because there's a lot of instances where you have to keep going around in circles Minish Cap - I can't remember much of it, that's what. Still fun, but kinda unmemorable compared to other Zelda games Twilight Princess - The tear fetch quests. Phantom Hourglass - Jolene. Everywhere you go, you almost literally CANNOT get away from her, and it becomes an EXTREMELY annoying interruption whenever she shows up! Spirit Tracks - I can't remember, probably the dark trains. They're intense, but they can be an annoying interruption Skyward Sword - Fi. Enough said. Link Between Worlds - The item rental system. It makes it feel rewarding to actually get the items, and the fact that when you die, RAVIO TAKES THEM BACK! So you have to go all the way back to your house (which Ravio DIDN'T EVEN GET YOUR PERMISSION TO STAY IN by the way) to re-rent them, then back to the dungeon to try again. Hyrule Warriors - The character selection. While the ones in the main game are pretty awesome, the others... just no. The postman? Agitha? TINGLE? Seriously? You couldn't have given us characters like Onox, Veran, Vaati or Nabooru? Triforce Heroes - The story is nowhere near as interesting as the story in the other Zelda games Breath of the Wild - It just doesn't feel that much like a Zelda game. It's still a good game, but it makes me worry about the future of the Zelda series, since I like the normal 3D Zelda formula a lot better than this, and if the other games do the same thing this game did, we're going to lose that awesome formula. Age of Calamity - The gaping plot holes it tears into the events between it and Breath of the Wild

I totally agree, but I would have personally prefer if instead of having moons everywhere, they would do like Spyro and Banjo Kazooie, where there is a secondary collectable that fills the empty space between moons. Like that you will still have a reason to explore each corner of the levels, without making the collecting of moon feel redundant.

Super Mario Bros. - You can't go back. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels - Those maze levels, and the fact it's mostly just reused assets from the first game. Super Mario Bros. 2 - The game can be unforgiving at times. Super Mario Land - The hard mode, I can agree on that. Super Mario Bros. 3 - The physics... by now they should've at least been decent. Super Mario World - The fact you can't revisit castles without a special code. Super Mario Land 2 - The fact Fire Mario has a feather on his head. It's still less offensive than Fire Attack for the Game & Watch, but still. The Native stereotype is really obvious here. Super Mario 64 - The camera is fucking terrible, and the walljump timing mechanic is so bad too. The addition of a wallslide from Sunshine onward is an upgrade. Super Mario Sunshine - Yoshi's Fruit Adventure showed me that sometimes the game's difficulty can become too annoying to be fun. Super Mario 64 DS - The fact the touch control sprite moves around when you use it. It would've been a great alternative control option if it just stayed in the center. New Super Mario Bros. - The Mega Mushroom. It's a boring power-up. Also being that this came after SMW, the fact you can't throw shells upward from this game onwards is dumb. Super Mario Galaxy - The fact that the camera goes upside down and all around way too often. It's so confusing. New Super Mario Bros. Wii - The fact that this game started the trend of taking Mario's world and stripping it to the bare minimum. That makes it's aesthetic incredibly boring. Super Mario Galaxy 2 - The story. Absolutely. Super Mario 3D Land - Oh god, where do I begin. The physics suck. The depth perception is abysmal. It has only a tiny amount of bosses compared to the amount of worlds it has, leading to constant overreuse. The "Special World" is a very misleading way to say "Hard Mode". The aesthetic is very boring. There's barely any variety in power-ups compared to 2D games. The game is just bad. New Super Mario Bros. 2 - The game feels like a blatant port of NSMB Wii with different level designs. New Super Mario Bros. U - The game feels again like a rehash of NSMB Wii. The Boost Mode is dumb too. New Super Luigi U - The fucking Star Coin locations are abysmal as hell to obtain without a guide or the internet. The difficulty isn't fun in the slightest either. The time limits are just asinine. Like 3D Land, it's just bad. Super Mario 3D World - It's a sequel to 3D Land... Okay, jokes aside, though the fact 3D Land got a sequel at all is questionable, it at least doesn't have most of 3D Land's issues. The real issue I take is those dumb character specific switches that force you to play as other characters. It's one thing to play as other characters for fun, it's another if the game forces you to do it if you want 100% completion. Super Mario Maker - It was a bit barebones, lacking stuff like slopes and the Koopalings. Super Mario Run - There's not enough content once you finish the main game. And trying to unlock stuff for the Kingdom Builder is such a grindy freaking slog. You'd expect the game to shower you with opportunities to collect Toads once you bought it. I regret my purchase of this game. Super Mario Odyssey - The fact there's little to no direction on how to obtain some Moons, making 100% completion too hard without a guide or the internet. Luckily it makes up for it by being a genuinely fun game, unlike Luigi U. Super Mario Maker 2 - The removal of Costume Mario, and the fact the game was unfinished at launch. Not to mention the fact you're required to pay extra for access to Course World now. Bowser's Fury - The fact you have to run an entire lap away from an area, and all the way back just to load other missions. Mixing open world with the Super Mario 64 style of having differences in the level per mission was a TERRIBLE IDEA. Not to mention the 3D World physics just aren't good enough in a more traditional 3D Mario setting. Missions can also be extremely repetitive too, like the Fury Blocks and Fury Luigi missions.

My worst thing about Mario Odyssey is the lame captures. It’s nice to capture classic enemies like Goombas and even Bowser, but stuff like a statue, puzzle piece or a moving letter sucks. Nintendo should have made one of the Dpad directions the release button instead of the crouch button as well.

For me the Worst thing in Super Mario Bros for NES and Mario series is the hellish castle theme (soundtrack). It was so bad that I had to stay away from hearing that theme. That is what I do not want to exist in the series and the soundtrack has to be replaced with one that is similar to SMB3's castle theme!

Super Mario Bros: Water levels (They are so annoying to control) Super Mario Bros 2: Ending Twist (It’s just so fricking stupid) Super Mario Bros 3: Frog Suit (The infamously terrible power up) The Lost Levels: The Difficulty (Almost impossible to beat) Super Mario Land: Length (Way too short, you can finish it in 1 hour) Super Mario World: Nothing (I’m sorry but this game is perfect in every way) Super Mario Land 2: The Glitches (So distracting while playing) Super Mario 64: The Camera (No need to explain this one) Super Mario Sunshine: Plinko Machine Level (I thing I absolutely hate in my favorite game) New Super Mario Bros: Graphics (This game is so ugly to look at) Super Mario Galaxy: Hub World (So boring. Just get to the level already!) New Super Mario Bros Wii: Motion Controls (Motions controls and 2D Mario don’t mix well) Super Mario Galaxy 2: Bowser (I know he’s cool but his character is cliché) Super Mario 3D Land: Bosses (Barely even bosses as they’re all too simple) New Super Mario Bros 2: Creativity (Nothing about this game is creative) New Super Mario Bros U: Blocks Mode (Why does this exist in an otherwise great game) Super Mario 3D World: Multiplayer (I can’t think of much but this is weak) Super Mario Run: Price (I hate paying for mobile games so much!) Super Mario Odyssey: Boss Kingdoms (You know what I strongly dislike? When games have tiny levels with only bosses)

I think the worst part of 3d world should been the requirements to get to the final world. As I believe you had to get all green stars, reach the top of every flagpole and beat every stage as all 5 characters. While the last one is easy to beat in 4 players, if you were by yourself, it meant you had to beat each level at least 5 times.

This is just my opinion but the number of moons and the difficulty makes sense. This is the first real 3D Mario since Sunshine and a lot of fans since then have grown up but still play Mario games cuz they love 'em. Those people are veterans, great at Mario games and need a challenge to be satisfied. But the main audience ARE kids who aren't hardcore triple jumping through levels. So making moon as easy as just running up to them makes sense, because those are the one for the new/younger fans. The 40 yo can try getting that moon faaar out in the desert where you need to change bullets 2 times to get it. There're double the moon to find because they're double the audience who wants to play the game.

water levels traditionally suck imo. I think since the American version of smb2 was released in japan as super mario usa then it shows its still a good game. it evolved the characters. new enemies like shy guys. toad was introduced. lost levels was too hard really but respect for anyone that beats it. i used to scoff at smb2 for not being official until smusa was pointed out to me.
