One thing I noticed from the tanks is how clean everything is. I worked in a fish shop and I know the amount of hours it takes to keep tanks clean. Really a testament to how well they're doing as a company that they're able to keep employees on hand to prioritise cleaning

My original career track was marine biology and my older brother introduced me into the saltwater hobby many years ago. I knew they had advanced to breeding clownfish and certain damselfish in captivity a while back. I’m also aware the spawn of many reef fish (angelfish, butterflyfish, tangs, etc) go through a nearly microscopic larval phase. I’d like to know how they’re able to supply them with the exact planktonic food sources and replicate other very specific ocean conditions these fry require to mature into the recognizable juveniles we are familiar with seeing. The hobby has advanced lightyears since it’s inception in the early 1970s (in the US) and I’m very glad to know they’re now breeding exotic coral fish in captivity. It’s the most sustainable way to maintain wild populations and have healthier fish for hobbyists going forward. 👍🏻

This was a fantastic video and it is truly wonderful to see the level of conservationism this company is contributing to the ecology of our planet. I will say though that the video didn’t quell my curiosity about “15 Ancient Creatures That Are Still Alive” and the promo photo that comes up when choosing this video. Would love to know what, if it’s real, the “creature” in that photo is.

I had no idea angelfish were such a diverse family or genus. I knew saltwater angelfish were much larger than our commonly seen freshwater. The saltwater angelfish look so different not just in shape but in size and color. Really interesting. Also, I had no idea Netherlands were big on the fish keeping and aquarium hobby. This place is top notch and I wouldn't be suprised if it's one of the leading/biggest breeding and wholesaler facilities of marine animals in the world. You are very priveleged to be able to collab with so many incredible fishkeepers in the industry and go to all the biggest expos traveling the world.

I can't imagine how much money it cost to set this place up beforehand, as well as run it. I know they sell to zoos and such, but for me it seems like the fish keeping hobby alone especially saltwater keeping isn't in such demand to be able to sell enough to break even or make a profit. And there is so so much more than goes into it besides stocking, industrial equipment, housing, electric, there's the location, rent, employee cost, transportation, insurance, marketing, materials, food, medicine, filtration, I could go on and on. I could be wrong since saltwater fish and keeping is much higher cost than freshwater. I guess what I'm saying is it blows my mind. All of it 🤯 😅

The aquarium industry/hobby has to come up with another environmental counterpoint besides the "well we only take a fraction compared to consumption" one. Whataboutism isn't an actual argument and I hate to see it all the time, especially from this company, that's clearly spending a good chunk of change on captive breeding.

Usually they are kept in a net and bucket type setup tied to a rope and slowly brought up to the surface over time to make sure they don't have problems with the pressure change and minimizing problems with their swimbladder if I'm correct.

I just hate how most marine fish can’t breed in captivity and that most have been stolen or fishnapped, from their home in the ocean 😢 to be kept in a glass prison. I only learned this recently, I had no clue. I understand their survival rate and ease of getting a meal is better, but they are still not where they are supposed to be, just feels wrong. I’m a freshwater keeper, and I know that all of mine were bred in captivity, which feels ethically better. This place obviously is fantastic though, and probably care for these fish better than most parents care for their human children. I do love that they are breeding as many as they can successfully in captivity more and more. It’s great to hear that they understand the concern of removing fish from the ocean and they obviously do it as ethically as possible, as opposed to how the illegal trade basically poisons the fish so they are easier to catch. I guess their motivation is the love for the ocean creatures, over the profit that can be made. I’m more sad for the ones sold in stores to people who barely keep them alive, let alone in the best conditions. Thanks for showing us that some places are trying to improve the hobby with breeding programs, using real biologists and other marine professionals, what an interesting place to work.

Wild caught fish tend to have stronger genetics than captive bred fish that have been line bred and selectively bred for generations. I suspect that the conditions that fish are bred and raised in on fish farms are not ideal. They are crowded and in some places are given hormones in order to stimulate them to breed.
