Nobody listens to Coraline, that's the point. That's why they call her Caroline instead of Coraline. And why she finds the other world appealing to begin with.

Travis7060312 If we're taking the theory about her being trapped in the limbo into account, this could be something the Belldame is doing deliberately. She's trying to make the 'real' world be more unbearable for Coraline so when she goes back to the fake world, she will love it more in comparison even though the worlds haven't changed at all as it's all being controlled by the Belldame.

Wybe wasn't trying to say that he wouldn't survive he's telling her don't feel sorry for me I'm not even real, which is why he illustrates it by blowing the stuffing that makes up his hand.

Miamore Cadenza I love that! It's even more depressing that way. He has enough conscience to know and understand that he doesn't even exist. He himself, his entity, isn't real and has no significance or meaning. He's just a pawn being forced to play a twisted game until he is no longer needed and will cease to continue. He has no soul so he can't go to a "happy place", in fact he doesn't have anything to keep his feelings and thoughts still there. And he knows this!

Miamore Cadenza but doesn't that negate the fact that the Other Mother reigns their free will? Wybie shouldn't be _able_ to help her. How can we say that she has absolute control over these puppets, as the video's theory says, when they seem to be able to resist her influence? You could say it's all a ruse, a play put on by the bedlam who's the master puppeteer to trick Coraline, to make the escape all that more believable, BUT: what if she _is_ weakening for some reason, and that they _are_ able to resist her influence? And WHY COULDN'T SHE RECREATE THE WELL, DAMMIT!

One thing that's always bugged me is when the other mother gets her hands in the key and Coraline asks why she doesn't have her own key and the other father says there's only one key. That's when the other mother takes him away like he said too much. By this point Coraline knows that the other mother is evil and stuff so it makes me wonder what the other mother is trying to hide at this point.
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 7 жыл бұрын
I have to think it has something to do with entry points. Yes, we know the Beldam is evil by then, but we don't know how many keys or portals to the Other World there are. So, if you start asking questions about how to get in/out, you might start looking for other ways out that the Other Mother doesn't want you to know about.

He made this for his daughters because it was either they were into this kind of stuff but it wasn't appropriate to him , or at some point his daughters wasn't finding what they craved for. I feel as if he added little things into the book he knew would get his kids going. Just thinking of crazy things. And then the Movie just took that no specific answer and put in there too. And also- its way more fun to use theories-

I think each kid has a key to certain parts of the property, in which the Beldam cannot have until she has control on the childs soul. I think it could be why you do not see beldam in some parts of the property. I think beldams floating hair just might be hinting that her final resting place had water in it. like a......well.

I really think that the rats are something more sinister than the other mother cause the other father says that the rats are their friends not something they control. I think that the song they sing maybe isn't necessarily to Coraline herself but is to the Other Mother as maybe a warning. That they were there before the Beldam and they will be there when she falls and that eventually they'll come back to the real world. That they're only really listening to the Beldam as a means to an end and once the Beldam falls they won't have a use for her anymore. They seem more like demons than just rats because they say they have tails which could be symbolism of a monster or demon. Witches were known to make pacts with demons and the demons would give them servants to command but if they don't fulfill whatever the pact was everything falls apart. Maybe the pact was to get magical energy from children and give it to the demon in exchange for power and the rat's song is a reminder to the Beldam what's in store for her when she fails. Or maybe the rats are related to that creature old giant creature Coraline found in the corridor. Something older than the Beldam itself. I'm rambling now but I definitely think the rats are something more than just the Beldam's minions.

Perhaps the Belldam could only get their souls by making the children fall in love with her, so they'd give them willingly. That's why she couldn't take them by force. Kind of like the devil perhaps? Your soul can't be taken, only given up

Also, maybe Coraline didn't leave after arriving in the Other World the first time. Remember, she falls asleep in the Other World and wakes up in the real world. But as far as we know, the only ways to the Other World are through the well and the door. The cat is the only one who can pass through willingly. So perhaps she can return through sleeping, but perhaps not.

Duriiam That's actually quite possible. In fact, when the cat dissapears in the end scene, a loud thump noise is heard before the screen goes dark. Aka they visually hint towards that Coraline is stuck in the other world without even knowing it!!! Makes even more sense because of the happy bright scenes that where before this dark and dramatic thump.

Hey. About the rats song, I believe it says that they have always been THERE (meaning the Other world), before she rose, like 'was born, and were there, like waiting, when she fell THERE, she didn't really fall, she went through the corridor, but if the original passage was the wheel, than the other word is technically UNDERNEATH the real world. And than they say SHE will be THERE when they rise from underneath. As if they intended to, after her fall, rise and take over her world, like somehow they were just waiting for her to rose and fall so they could rise. And they say that everyone will get what they deserve, right? Then maybe it is something about revenge, from who trapped then there maybe? I mean, only the rats and the cat seem to be able to trespass between the worlds, it's gotta be something there. Like they don't really belong down there. The game the cat 'plays' with the rats is so similar to the one the Beldame seems to be playing with Coraline. And the cat actually refers to the rats as souls, when he explains about giving them a chance to scape, or at least hope of it? Because I don't really remember, but just occurred to me that the cat and the Beldame could actually be parallels. It just seems like he is helping Coraline, but he never give her a clear answer. It's almost like he's playing with her. And he always seemed to have it all under control. Cats have the 'fame' of mysterious, related to magic and 'tricksters', but I not even sure if he IS a cat. Maybe it's just a form he assumed. He never introduced himself. He say they don't need a name, something like that, not sure if he said this or I implied when I read it, but even if he says this is a cat thing, he clearly says it in opposition to humans. And who else never says her name, rathering being referred to otherwise, like by 'the beldame' or 'the other mom'? She goes by the form she assumes and not a identity, just like 'the cat'. Who, by the way, seems to have a long history with her. The cat's voice, sounds to Coraline like her own voice, inside her head. Either is a way to say the cat is inside her head, like playing with her mind, or he IS a part of her mind, I guess. Well, so he says the beldame likes games, as he said he also did. He said he likes bothering her. And suggests Coraline to propose her a game, even though it's obvious the beldame wouldn't keep her words. We know he have fun giving false hopes to the souls he trapped... There's definitely something there! I can't tell if he works with the beldame, if they compete with each other, or if he is manipulating the whole thing. If she really is a woman who found this world and stayed there by dealing with magic and acquiring souls, who created it at first place? And with her so far three souls, compared to the rats the cat seems to be trapping, maybe she is playing the cat's game. Why was it important to the cat that she gets the other souls? And we se that her creations seemed to fall apart when Coraline took the souls away. That brings me to the corridor, that turns in to something that seems like the inside of a living thing when the BELDAME'S creation on the other world fall apart. Without what SHE built in it, it's like a living thing that Coraline is inside of, and maybe that thing would want the beldame to leave, but couldn't, because she also had powers, she also had souls. Maybe that's how the cat could get inside her head, and beldame was capable of reading it, because she was now part of something they could control. ... Sorry, I may have went pretty crazy by the end. But this really got me thinking. The rats poem, tough, I'm pretty sure that's what it means.

You guys, what if the other mother is actually a version of Lamia? Lamia was Greek monster that used to steal and devour other people's children because hers were killed or taken , depending on what version you read, so she takes these kids but really deep down she doesn't want to kill them which is why she "loves" them, in a version of the Lamia myth, Lamia is cursed to keep her eyes open forever to obsess over the images of her dead children, what if she gouged out her own eyes and replaced them with buttons because she couldn't stand the sight any more? Maybe the cat is a male version of the goddess Hera, the goddess who took Lamia's children, Hera would be someone who would be just as powerful and want to toy with Lamia without ever actually caring about Coraline, idk I may be wrong, but it sounds like it fits to me lol

Maybe because it doesn't have a soul? She feeds off of children's souls, and maybe in the movie she can eat bugs because every living thing has a soul? What if the furry thing that she touches is actually the cat somehow? I feel like this fits into your theory about the cat being in cahoots with the other mother, in that way she could easily manipulate him into a portal so to speak. This could also explain why the cat can seemingly go to the other world whenever he wants. He also seems like a rather old cat.

I have a theory, I think that the boring blue boy could be the beldams son and he fell into the well, the mother (beldam) tried to save him and fell in as well. The boy died but the beldam lived. When the beldam found the magical world in the well the mother brought her son back to life but it became twisted (often like those things in that world are) and he became the cat, since the cats eyes are so blue it could allude to the “boring blue boy” they lived peacefully together until the beldam realized she needed food, and began to prey on children. I think her son / the cat did his best to ward children off of the other world but was also kept under close control by the beldam since it was his mother.

I wouldn't say so. Both are equally great but in seperate ways. I read the book as a kid and it quite literally scared the shit out of me. It's a pure concept peice filled with ambiguity and plot holes and that's what made it even creepier to me (everything was isolated and askew. just the descriptions made everything seem bleak, hollow, and isolated). The movie, however, is a fully realized and fully saturated peice of competent and visually pleasing storytelling. Both did their jobs well, just differently.

Here’s a quick theory ;) the longer Coraline is in the other world The longer the bedlam can feast on the other souls. I also think the Beldam uses the souls and puts them in the dolls because the souls were already in the exact house so when the beldam makes the soul sand she puts it in the doll taking there eyes she sewed the buttons of a child’s buttons and when she feasts on that child’s soul maybe there soul goes into her body and stays there which means she can see through the buttons when they are in the real world.

I thought it was funny that her right hand came after Coraline when that's the hand she swore on. BUT the fact that she swore on it is actually the whole reason she had to give up on that hand. Because of that promise the hand sort of "belonged" to Coraline now, reason to which it could go to the real world after Coraline. Now that doesn't mean the hand isn't controlled by the beldam anymore, so she could use it to her advantage to retrieve the key.

I began to notice something: The reason why the other Wybie didn't escape with Coraline, is in fact because that he wouldn't survive in the other world. When the beldam made the doll at the beginning of the movie, we see that the soul sand became cotton, probably died after so many years in the real world. That would happen to the other Wybie after some time if he goes to the real world. Is just an idea I got after watching this video a lot of times. ^^

An interesting thing I noticed when I recently bought the book online, it's classified as fantasy/horror and I thought that was really funny. Nothing to do with kids, just horror.. and doesn't that suit the underlying movie plot which is light and tailored for children? I have developed this fascination (hmm.. obsession? Fascination. Lol) with the Coraline story and I came to the same sort of conclusions about what it really meant when I watched the movie a few times and that's probably why I love your theories so much. I might have commented this before, but you are so good at what you do and you've filled in so many gaps for me and the logic is undeniable and it really has added to my personal little Coraline experience. Has a theory that says that "beldam" or the other mother, in fact was already human and she was the first owner of the rose palace, she supposedly fell into the well (the well is a portal to the other world) and Got stuck there, there's a scene where Wybie says if you look at the bottom of the pit you can see the same stars by day, and a great detail of the other world is that there is always night there, then continuing, to beldam Fell there and could not return until one day a new resident arrived in the house that was actually Wybie's great-grandfather or the father of the twins, he ended up going to the other world only that he managed to escape the beldam and when he came back He told everyone but no one believed, so his daughter one of the twins was caught so he restudied to move there after 25 years another child was caught and then another another Wybie's great-grandfather felt guilty for having moved and left those children Live there knowing everything, when the great-grandfather of the aibi died he reincarnated in the cat (so the cat lives with Wybie and he tries to help the coraline and that's why beldam hates him so much) anyway this theory is very big but detail In the end the coraline throws the key in the well ie she returned to beldam. Then, continuing to Beldam when she fell into the pit she gained a "power" that this world offered her. So she started to attract kids with sweets, treats and more. Then the theory that wybie was Beldam's son was wrong. Well, when Beldam fell into the pit, she gained the power of this world. So, now, she who created all the neighbors of the rose palace. Ex: Wybie, Charlie. Well, it was her puppets. And now, you ask me: but why Wybie and Charlie were trying to help Coraline? For some reason, beldam placed pieces of the children's souls unintentionally on Charlie & Wybie.

I just theorized that Coraline is really lonely since her mom and dad always seem busy for work or busy in general. So she preoccupies herself with her imagination. Basically I always thought, what if the whole storyline was her imagination/daydream/ just a game she made up so she has something to do. She wished to have this amazing life so she creates her own, and how it could possibly happen then soon comes to realization (metaphore for growing up, learning the real world or just going through puberty or something) that nothing is perfect. Perfect doesn't exist and people who seem perfect usually have a lot of secrets. The fake world had many of secrets. There were hints of her kindof knowing something bad would happen (knowing there is no such thing as perfect) but she doesn't want to admit it at the time. (In the movie it zoomed in on the mom tapping her fingers against the table in a evil villain sort of way). She soon finds out their is no such thing as perfect and comes to the real world instead of the 'innocent' la la land she built and realized her life could be so much worse. She also realized how much she truly would miss her real parents not being around at all compared to being in the house and not listening to her and appreciates evwrything her parents do (work to take care of her). I basically metaphore it for growing up realizing the real world. I also always thought, what if the button eyed dimension was just everything bad in her kife in general being thrown at her (going through life with ups and downs) just her mind makes them seem bigger then they were and she manages to save herself. Creating a way of managing to save herself also goes back to my first theory. Something I just kinda realized while typing this made come out as if she was depressed, creating things to make herself not feel depressed, realizing she can't do that because surpressing makes it worse, it getting bad, then saving herself. Wow... i don't know if that makes sense at all to other people, but it does to me Also as for Wiby I think that was someone trying to help her, but she kept pushing away and in her dark times where she feels like everything is against her she realizes someone is there.

We are small but we are many (Depicting that there's many of the rats but they are small) We are many we are small (Other way around the first sentence) We were here before you rose (Either before Caroline was born since the Beldam is really old to trap that fairy or Caroline came to the pink Palace since they're up on a hill and/or on top of the other world or going to the Other world) We will be here when you fall (Either when Caroline dies the Beldam will still continue her soul collecting or figurative speech of her going to the other world) We have teeth and we have tails (I don't know but my best shot is that when you bite something it tears or breaks or whatever, since its teeth and they can use teeth to move around, to manipulate things and tails can be use to attract things. Especially cats, and tails can be caught easily. Slowing them down or stopping them. Kinda like how the Beldam can manipulate the movements, actions, and anything of what she made. We have tails we have teeth (Refer to other sentence) We were here before you fell (The Beldam is old and so is the world she created so like the other line it's either the figurative speech or before Caroline dies.) You'll be here when we rise (When people rise into power you'll see some or a lot of truth of that person. So they maybe saying that Caroline will see the truth of the Beldam and the other world. And you see this with the other father and the mirrors and such.) We have eyes and we have nerverses (Eyes are the windows to the soul. So they have souls and nerves help the brain realize things like pain, emotion, control over body and the 5 senses and such. So they have souls and they can sense and feel emotions and such.) We have tails an we have teeth (Refer from other lines) You'll all get what you deserveses (Meaning that since Caroline isn't accepting the Beldams love they'll get this sorta backlash from her. That from Caroline being this curious and not "loving" towards her and not accepting the eyes she'll get what the Beldam think they deserve. "They" being the previous souls and all.) When we rise from underneath (Underneath my symbolize the other world. And them going to the real world. Probably to mess with her or that world. To either lore or mentally hurt, or maybe the reason why her parents were missing in the first place.) This is my interpretation not saying its 100% right.

I know these are older videos but I just discovered your channel and am going through this whole playlist. For me, I'd say the corridor between the worlds in the movie seems less to be like the well and more like a birth canal or something like that. You mentioned in one of your Coraline videos that the rain in the scene where Coraline discovers the well is a symbol of rebirth. The tunnel between the world looking like a birth canal, moving, squeezing, and shifting would also tie into the same image of birth or rebirth. Or, in Coraline's case, given your theory, potentially a birth into death, like a reverse birth.

In the movie the cat talks about how he's not "the other anything" which means he doesn't belong in either world and can be in both. The Other Wybie was created by the Beldam so he can't survive in the real world because he belongs in the Other world.

But she realises that it was a mistake so she creates the other father and the other mother. However, when her imagination does not fill the void she tries to go back to her old life, but you can't really bring someone back to life. That struggle of accepting what she have done is shown through the beldam. But hey! That's just a theory.

Well if you get the graphic novel, where in the book they say coraline is winey, and the movie, where she just complains all the time and is kind of a pain in the butt. Winey + complainy= punishment.

Also I think the cat is on her side because he is always teaching her stuff and when wybie is talking about how his grandma's sister disapeard it shows the Cat purr in a bad way when he sees the doll from the window like he knows what's gonna happen and how it happens before so he's not happy about it. So the cat is deffintaly on her side. Also when Coraline goes threw the portal when the mom leaves the car sees her threw the window and purrs again in that growl tone.

You can tell in the book that the beldam is lying about not taking Coraline’s parents right away. You can tell because when the beldam shows Coraline the image of her parents on vacation they say the they aren’t worried about Coraline because she has the other mother to look after her. This is a lie because in the book Coraline is given the buttons on her first day there. She refuses, goes home, and can’t find her parents. How would they talk about the other mother in the mirror if they didn’t even know about her.

Maybe whenever the mice say they were "here before Coraline fell and she'll be here when they rise", they are implying that they were being controlled/working for the Other Mother when Coraline entered the new dimension/universe, or "fell into the well/trap", and the mice will eventually reveal or Coraline will realize she is in a limbo Pink Palace!

Your question about why the dead dogs on the shelf were present in the movie but not the book is interesting. I honestly think that was just the film makers trying to make it more interesting visually, but, I don't know. Nice catch!

I know I'm way late but I think the song references how the beldam came to be. Maybe. "We were here before you fell"? The well is said to have a deep bottom but that there's a starry night sky when you're down there. Fairy rings are in legend whenever someone (an individual, like maybe a young child) does something to summon one, kinda like doing a prayer, or in the case of mushrooms, they tend to pop up in really moist and fertile land fast. There's a hint that the beldam buried her mother. Maybe in that universe the Western Expansion happen faster than our own. Beldam was a young child maybe, her mother and father building a home out of local wood, and making a nice well. Something happened to her father and he basically disappeared without a trace and her mother got very ill. one evening Beldam realized that she needed a bucket of water from the well. she got some, came home and walked in on her mother dying violently, maybe she's had a seizure or is having a heart attack. but either way, watching her mother die in such a way, without being able to help, not being able to do anything but try to get rid of her mother's fever with the cold water she drew. The next day Beldam had to go and bury her mother. dragging her corpse out into the wilderness and trying her hardest to make a grave, but being a young girl, she's only able to make a shallow one. (hence mushrooms.) Out of grief, she visited her mother daily, and prayed (as at the time everyone was predominantly Christan.) and her physical and mental health declined with the following weeks, perhaps developing a form of depression. Beldam may have started to see odd rats and spiders, becoming friends with them, and told her some odd things that further ruined her mental state. One day, the tired, lonely Beldam went to her mother's grave, as she neglected to do so in weeks. Perhaps weakend by malnutrition and dehydration, becoming more depressed and more insane. She prayed upon arrival, and a fairy girl appeared. Beldam and this fairy became friends. The fairy lifted her out of her depression, but the damage to the Beldam's mind was done. in the evenings, this fairy girl would leave. Beldam heard her older mice friends whispering to her. she could be happy again. she could have power. she could have her parents back. but on one condition. She needs to convince the fairy to go into the well. Beldam loved the idea of going back to her old life, and dreamt about it. Her father, strong and willing, her mother, kind, but in a fragile way, as always. The next day, her fairy friend brings her a button, which was this fairy girl's favorite, and decided to give it to her human friend. Beldam pretended to be happy and excited to receive it, and eventually suggests to go outside, since she had to draw some water from the well. Fairy girl complies. they chatter happily about random, meaningless things, and upon arrival, Beldam realises that it's starting to rain hard. The fairy girl urges Beldam to go home, but the broken and messed up girl refuses, and ends up slipping into the well some. Fairy girl grabs the Beldam, trying to help, but the rats voices ring through her head, and Beldam drags the fairy down with her, using the fairy as a cushion of sorts, as the well was fairly deep. She of all people would know, her father made it. as they fell fast to the ground Beldam had a moment of realisation that she too will not only be trapped, but killed too. The rats voices spoke to her, thanking her, telling her she can enter there world, and have nearly unlimited power, becoming what we know her as.only downside, was that Beldam was unhappy. She could pretend her parents were alive and well, but they weren't good enough. She thought this was because the fairy didn't give her enough power. time passed and a new family took claim to the land. either continuing to build on, or destroying the old one. She learned of this through the mice, her only friends. They suggested this may be the time to strike and she wondered how she may coax the child to stay trapped here. That's when she remembered the button. she could make a doll, but how to get the child on the right track to her web? well, a certain door of course! this door was more unique though. leading to the child's play room. hence starting a string of disappearances over the years. there. long ass story based on my own imagination with possibly plenty of plot holes but screw it. I'm tired. goodnight.

I think the creepy song is about the other kids and Coraline. “ We are small but we are many ” three kids “ We were here before you rose ” they’ve been trapped there for years and the fairy for centuries before Coraline was born and got there. “ We will be here when you fall” when Coraline is thrown inside the mirror they are waiting for her “You will be here when we rise” Coraline indeed frees the kids souls but she’s still stuck in the other world. Also most of the songs in the movie seem to be interpreted by little kids

I think the meaning of the rats song is that they were the ones who told Coraline about the well because they say “we were here before you rose we will be here when you fall”.

About the rat's song. I think when it says "We were here before you rose, we will be here when you fall." I think it's talking about how the Beldam rose up to obtain the world, and that they (the rats) will be there when the Beldam falls. Then it says that they were there before she fell, and they will be there when she rises. Meaning she "fell" down the well, and they will be there when she rises up it again.

My theory is that Coraline commits suicide because of her terrible life and then goes to heaven until god realizes she is a sinner and then sends her to hell which is the other mother or the devil soon realizing her ways waking up to think of it as a dream yet still in hell because she is a sinner hence the reason the cat still goes through the pole as a sighn of hell

I have a theory on the song and I believe that the song is saying that they have to trick coralline so they can be free because at some point in the song they say they will watch her fall as they rise meaning that once the other mother is through with her they may be set free from the other world and hopefully carry on with a great life

My theory about why there are only three spirits in the mirror is because in the book they state that if they go into the light, they shrivel and are gone, but how would they know that? There must have been many other ghost children that did go out into the light but unfortunately disappeared.
