I've made a realization about the people in Ashland, Oregon that Mel Jones and Coraline end up interacting with. Listen to my Coraline theory and decide for yourself if it fits!
Find cool Coraline stuff on Amazon: amzn.to/2SD0ews
When I made my last video (the Coraline Core Theory) I had a few different ideas floating around in my head about how the townsfolk functioned, so I didn't write an explanation into my script. Boy, oh boy, did you guys take notice of that error on my end!
I hope this video alleviates the paradox I presented!
Also, stay tuned at the end for more proof that Coraline never leaves the Other World!

I'm not sure if you have noticed this yet, but when Coraline first meets Wybie and falls down. She breaks the fairy ring around the well. Maybe that could also be another reason that the Beldam is able to sort of invade the real world.

That honestly surprises me to hear. Every time I go to California, if it's below 60 degrees people are throwing on parkas like they're in a blizzard. I figured a state used to seasons would at least use weather appropriate attire. :)

The Fangirl I don't know much about Californians, except their driving is horrible. What I do know is that the attire here struck me as odd, since I moved from Idaho. Out here people are used to rain, not snow, but they don't wear rain boots. They only wear Nike shoes, probably because the Nike headquarters are out here. I don't know, perhaps I'm the crazy one here, but I thought it might help you figure some things out that you didn't know before. Have a nice week.🐇

There's one problem with the photograph and I don't think anyone has ever actually addressed it. If the Beldam has never heard Coraline's friends' voices, how can she recreate them? I mean, these are Coraline's best friends. If their voices are off, even just a little, I expect Coraline to catch on to that. I don't have any real explanation on how the Beldam can create voices to people she has never heard. She's...psychic? I really don't have an answer for this.
@torababble3046
@torababble3046 7 жыл бұрын
Illusions which pull directly from Coraline's perceptions maybe? Other mother could set something up in the magic which triggers an audible illusion of "Coraline hears her friends talking to her" and so Coraline's mind fills in the gaps - i.e. the actual voices and quirks of speaking of her friends, saying what the other mother's illusion directs them to say - to go with what she sees.
@biscuiteaterelliott6367

I am not sure. That's an oddly specific ability and the Beldam hasn't been shown to do anything with illusions except, debatably, the mirror trick. It's possible but it sounds crazy OP when paired with all the abilities we know she can do.

look at some of the characteristics of the store clerk as in the big breasts and the extremely long nose. the nose could be from the other mothers final form and the bigger breasts could be from the Neighbor lady. meaning the other mother is only taking characteristic traits from the characters that she already has to create new ones for Coraline to see. I feel like this could be done because everyone wouldn have to be perfect because Coraline has never seen these people in the past so it wouldn't matter how they look now .so they very easily could be just pieced together from different people throughout other world.

I'm just going to point out that Coraline takes place in February or close to it most likely. At the store when Coraline and her mother are shopping, there is a sign that says "President Day Blowout: All School Uniforms 1/2 Priced." So, if we're basing Coraline to take place in the United States and that stores typically mark stuff down near a holiday, It's sometime in mid to late February or early March. And you can transplant Tulips as late as February. Though, I'm stumped on the orchard. Good job spotting that nifty detail.
@may.k_me
@may.k_me 6 жыл бұрын
Why? Some blossom trees begin to flower from late February. Also, let's say that the trees started blossoming because of the other world's magic seeping into the real world, since the orchard is near the well. If we go with that idea, it doesn't mean that Coraline is stuck in limbo or the other world

@veerfara6742

Coraline and her family just recently moved, possibly during spring break, so she would have to buy a new school uniform. Plus, in Oregon, trees don't have leaves in the beginning of spring, and blossom after the rains come. It makes sense with the rainy day they move in that Coraline wants to start planting with the new spring mud. The poison oak bush could have been actually dying, or being so close to the wall sheltered the leaves and kept them from falling off.

I had an interesting thought whilst watching this. Have you ever heard of the saying 'the eyes are the window to the soul'? It seems pretty coincidental that the beldam chooses to take their eyes as taking the eyes may mean more control over the person. The beldam herself might not need to make and use buttons on herself but for the children it may just make the difference between self control and manipulation.

Kainan Huggins Maybe they are being subconsciously controlled by the Beldam to never leave town, because if even one person tried to leave then it would break the entire illusion, since one person would tell others that they couldn't leave. But this explanation also begs the question, if the Beldam can control people in the 2nd level of her world, why do the old ladies give Coraline the stone used to see through the facade? And if Coraline somehow found and used the stone at the end of the movie, would she see that she is actually still trapped?
@tabinkum

I love your theory so much and find them intriguing but I have a theory of my own about coraline. What if the whole story was in Coraline's head. What if the bedlam represented Coraline's depression, that she got from her parents neglection and annoyance of her. Think of like this: Whenever Coraline is in the real world everything is grey and dead with the exception of the ending which symbolises her overcoming her depression. The reason I believe the bedlam symbolises Coraline's depression is because when she first sees her, Coraline is confused yet goes along with it. Notice how the bedlam takes the form of her mother this could be because she could be the main reason of her depression considering throughout the movie, she is the parent she talks to the most and also the one that gets the most annoyed and angry at Coraline. The other world could be a fantasy word Coraline has created in her head where she can escape to when life gets to hard like a happy place of some sort. And seeing as all of her neighbors have talked to her about their past /(current) careers Coraline has imagined what those must have been like in her head. Another bit of evidence is the fact that when Coraline is looking through the house and taking notes she seems to see everything in a negative light this might just be who Coraline us or something more. The scene with the buttons where the other mother wants to sew them in her eyes is like depression telling Coraline to give up her life and notice how Coraline acts so horrified at the possibility of taking her own life ( which might because she has too give up her eyes but it's still s possibility). Now onto the ghost children I believe these might be the past victims who have succumbed to depression and taken their own life ( signify the buttons) and notice how they say that the other mother 'ate up their lives'. some other things I noticed is the fact that wybie's grandma said her sister was stolen which could also signify depression stealing her life and she doesn't want herself or Wylie to go there because to her it's a reminder of her sisters death. also another thing is that when most people are in depression it's like their trapped in their own body or mind and that's exactly whats happened to Coraline she is tapped in the other world and to get out she has to defeat the bother mother which is like her having to beat her depression. And remember that scene where she's trying to close the door but she can't cause the other mother is trying to open it well it turns out that several different set of hands help her to close it to give her strength, that symbolises Coraline closing the door on her depression but she can't do it alone so other people help her to give her strength and close the door for good which also symbolises Coraline locking the door and did you notice what the other mother said ( I'm just gonna call her O.M) while Coraline was crawling 'Don't leave me, Don't leave me I'll die without you' almost like Coraline's depression can't live without her a body to inherit. I'm almost done I promise, Remember the bit in the film where the hand of the O.M is still there that means ghat Coraline s depression is still there but is smaller than before so Coraline heads out to get rid of the key but when it attacks her, out pops Wybie to help Coraline and finally he crushes the hand which proves that she couldn't get rid of her depression she needed to help. I think the cat knew all along that Coraline had depression because here's a little fact animals can sense humans emotions like a scent same goes for bobinskys jumping mice telling Coraline 'don't go through little door ' which symbolize s Coraline stepping into her depression. And finally a huge clue of depression is do you know how in every poster of Coraline and even the movie there's that creepy hand reaching towards Coraline like depression reaching towards Coraline to get her in its grape and in the end where in the sky how they two hand clouds unblock the sun symbolises Coraline finally being free from the depression and the. darkness moving to let the light in. Anyway that was my theory what did you think!

I really like this theory, maybe even more than the Limbo Pink Palace (probably because it is more uplifting and less depressing than the idea that she never got out). Both theories are very good, but since Coraline is fictional anyway and open to interpretation, I think I prefer this one...

Maybe: it is becoming spring, probably around march, so the trees still appear dead. The poison oak plant could simply be a dying bush, and the trees don't have many leaves below them because they blew away with the wind. The reason the trees could have blossomed during the 2-3 days might be that time in the other world passes differently than time in the real world. Coraline spending the time to find all of the ghost children's eyes and her real parents may have been 4-5 days in the real world.

There is a problem with this theory. The story took place somewhat around Presidents' Day so it is slowly becoming spring as we progress through the story
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 7 жыл бұрын
But, that still gives us some timeline issues. President's Day is in February, that's still two months before the trees would be blooming in the real world. And, if Coraline wasn't in school for two months, and her family stopped paying rent for that long (because the Beldam took them), there's no way there wouldn't be issues revolving around that. The police would get involved, missing persons reports would be filed, and the Jones' would have likely gotten evicted and all their stuff sold at an auction as abandoned property.

First of all excuse my english second of all i love all of your theorys Ok lets get started i completly agree whith your coraline theory but i recently watch the theorizer time line video and something just pop into my head and it was just like u and other sugested beldam is a fairy and she feeds out of magic but when other fairys just feed on "residual" magic/feelings/pride/life energy around them beldam realised she could become much powerfull than any other fairy by feeding direcly out of humans so she started atacking them and that make the other fairys trap her (whith the fairy ring on the well which is the original portal) into a empty dimension where she doesn't had magic to feed off and eventualy would die but the beldam as said by the theorizer started feeding on the magic of bugs who entered the fairy ring which was enough to keep her alive although she turned into this creepy looking figure of fairy body remains and bug parts (expetialy spiders) when she became powerfull enough to interfer whith the real world she started to lure humans (children or very proud people) to her world in hope of geting enough power to eventualy break the fairy ring and escape she kept on kidnaping people keeping them on the pinkpalace limbo as food sorce and this is a add to your theory of how the beldam became to be the rest of your theory is in my opinion right this was just what i think wa the origin of the beldam PS: I already comented this on your core theory video

+ The Fangirl I have an interesting counter-argument to your theory about the Beldame not being able to create "real-life" versions of her friends that we see in the photograph in Coraline's room. If Beldame can create Coraline's friends in a photograph from the doll seeing the photograph of them, then how come the boys in the photo can speak? And Coraline seems to think nothing of the voices, showing that they're accurate. And the Beldame couldn't have known their voices, as we obviously can't tell what something sounds like through a photograph

If Coraline is trapped In the Pink Palace Limbo, and the other mother is pretending to be Coraline's real mom... Then are her parents still in the real world? And if they are, do you think they notice that Coraline is gone and trying to find her? And is the whole snowglobe scene, and the "help us" scene an illusion created by the other-mother? Could this be part of the other-mother's game? The other-mother traps Coraline in the Limbo, and the broken snowglobe could be the other-mother creating an illusion for Coraline. To give her a false sense of hope and security that she is safe in the real world.

I'm really enjoying all the Coraline theories, but I think theres another reason on why the seasons changed so quickly. When you were talking about the very end of the movie when they're planting tulips, it could have been later in the future when they were doing that. And about the part when the trees in the orchard all of a sudden blossomed when Coraline is going to hide the key, maybe they only blossomed because a part of the Other Mother (her hand) was in the real world, and since she has some sort of magic powers she could have caused that to happen with the part of her entering the real world. I'm not super positive about my last thing, but it's just an idea lol. Either way I'm still enjoying all the Coraline Theories you post. I really liked the one where you talked about the fairy ring, keeping the Other Mother in her world.

I personally think most of this theory is far fetched, however I can kinda believe the last one. At first I was confused because I don't think Coraline brought the doll, but then, to add on to it, most clothing has buttons. Assuming that the Beldam can see through any button. Or is it just buttons she attaches?

Ahhhh, I feel my brain cells cringing with ideas. First of all, I think you're amazing to be able to pin point the seasonal change. I would never had thought of that, so awesome! Second, after seeing this video, I have no doubts there is a limbo world. The sudden seasonal change supports that theory so perfectly! But, just to see the other side of the argument, one might think the autumn setting was just to give off a dark, eerie mood just to foreshadow all the dark and scary things that were gonna happen, and the blooming trees could be more metaphorical, saying "Yay, happy ending! Lemonade anyone?" But personally, I definitely believe the limbo world theory. But please continue these Coraline videos!
@TheFangirlWatches

And you have a point, symbolism can become an issue with some of these movies. For instance, Batman -v- Superman *mild spoilers* show a young Bruce Wayne getting lifted up by a bat vortex, and it's supposed to be a metaphorical moment (or, at least, I hope that's what they were going for!). But, the problem is, you CAN'T use metaphors of this nature in a movie about superheroes, because 10-20 minutes later I'm supposed to suspend all disbelief and take Superman's powers at face value. So, it becomes a contradiction that doesn't work. If we take SOME of Coraline as symbolism, we hit the same wall. Well, what was real? Where do we draw the line? Did the Beldam even exist? This is a movie where things either are, or they are not, and I feel like we're shown a real event (or, real for Coraline, at least). Laika, though, has been very deliberate with what they do and do not say/show. Usually, I could chalk something up to a time or budget issue, but they go out of their way to make one scene characters who only appear for a few seconds, meaning they are very meticulous with their creations and careful about everything that they put on camera. With Coraline, I can't tell you how many times I have found things in post-production to talk about, because I'll be adding in the pictures and go "holy crap, look at that detail in the background I never noticed before!" It's like a Where's Waldo version of a movie - only we don't know what we're looking for, so we have to figure it out for ourselves! :) And that's what makes movies like this so incredible to analyze, because we have SO MANY ways we can do it!

the reason the poison oak still got foliage is so that wybie can identify it as poison oak (notice the tiny leaves on the dowsing rod she forgot to remove). I highly doubt the film makers were concerned with it fitting the season because its just a plant with old leaves. winter could have been mild, the poison oak might be fierce... etc if anything its a minor inconsistence for the sake of pushing the story. same with the fast approaching spring season- the weather always matches the overall atmosphere and emotional world of coraline herself on that day

Very interesting. I could see the Beldam needing people to enter the other world to get copies of them because like you said she never copied Coraline's friends. I love that you used your expertize as a photographer to explain one of your theories. Real smart. Also the orchard situation is an interesting note. I do wonder if with winter so close that maybe Whybie and Coraline just waited until spring to talk to the grandmother. But your theory also has a chance of being correct. Like may theories do. LOL. :p

the way you said “just because she couldn’t reach out and grab them fast enough doesn’t mean she didn’t register their presence” REALLY reminds me of how spiders can feel when prey gets caught in their web through vibrations. maybe the other world is a lot bigger than what is shown in the book/movie/graphic novel and is structured kind of like a spider web, with the beldam an omnipresent force that can feel any “prey” that gets caught no matter if they come through the main entrance in the pink palace or a different entrance elsewhere. idk it’s just a thought.

Maybe, now this is just a thought, but what if the time in the other world passes a lot faster than the real world, if you're in there for say five minutes, 5 hours or even days pass. That's how the seasons would change so quickly, and when coraline's parents were in the snow globe, it represented that in the real world, it was winter! Maybe the snow globe would change with the seasons so that the Belldamn could keep track of the real world!

I have an idea about why the beldam was able to create the townsfolk. I believe the theorizer's theory that the beldam fell down the well and found the other world. (And she taken over it) Maybe the beldam saw the faces of a bunch of people before she fell down the well so she could create the townsfolk by remembering the faces of people she seen. The reason why the beldam wouldn't recreate life size copies of Coraline's friends is because just like you said she doesn't know everything about how they look but she knows the faces. The beldam was fine with recreating the townspeople because Coraline wouldn't notice if they were a bit off. They weren't people who Coraline knew.

Okay, I admit not being an American, I don't know when stores hold their President's Day sales but I assume that February is when President's Day is held would be a safe bet. Therefore Coraline arrives in Oregon in February. But how long does this adventure of Coraline's last? The afternoon she sneaked off to the other world, her mother went grocery shopping. This is when Coraline tried to return to the real world by going to bed and failed. How long was she asleep? Was it a nap or a full night's sleep. Either way by the time she returned the groceries her mother purchased but didn't get a chance to put away spoiled. Now usually you would expect this to take more than a few hours or even days. Perhaps time passes differently in the other world. As to the apple trees, they bloom in early April. So I assumed that Coraline's adventure took place over March break (last week of March) which explains why Coraline & Wybie are not in school during the day. By the way Ashland's Shakespeare festival (a real thing) begins in February and lasts until November.

hey i love your theories! i did notice on my last viewing of the film when Coraline and her mother goes shopping there is a President's day sale banner in the store. also the Shakespeare festival seems to run from February- October. so i'd say the film starts in at the end of February. it taking place at the change of the seasons could account for the trees appearing dead than blooming. Assuming the film takes place over one or two weeks in place of days. As for the poison oak, if it's a mild winter not all plants are going to loose their leaves even if they change color.

Hey there, just discovered your Core Theory video then went ahead and watched the playlist. I have to say I find your Coraline theories really interesting and plausible! A couple points: First, the trees. What if it is early spring? Trees were bare, it rained a lot, then it warmed up and they all budded. Also, Wikipedia says poison oak leaves are bronze when first unfolding in Feb-March, so that could fit for late winter (with some early/unseasonable warm days) or really early spring. Second, the thing in the tunnel. I went and reread that passage, and at first it made me think maybe the house itself was alive? At first reading it seemed she thought the creature was older than the other mother, then I realized she was referring to the tunnel itself being older. But she also seems to refer to the tunnel knowing she was there. As if the creature *is* the tunnel. Or maybe it's a grue in there.... Edit: Just discovered the very last line of the book reads "...summer was almost done." I guess that *doesn't* explain the trees in the movie!

Hello! =D I have watched almost ever coretheory you have made but I'm watching trough them again. I love the theory of the towns people walking trough a portal without knowing anything, but I think it's weird that they can 1. not go trough something weird like a tunnel. We see how Coraline are going trough a tunnel to come to the fake world but this could be as simple as just the other mother created it to scare or just show coraline that the fake world is "better" or diffrent. 2. The towns people have to se something weird that they see on a daily basis in the real world. When I watched your other theorys you have said that the other mother takes Coraline to diffrent places problobly so she can't see anything odd with the place, but the towns people are still in for example their home and at work, If the other mother don't want Coraline to know some small details that dosen't make sence I think that the town people have noticed a bunch. Maybe so dosen't the other mother care or she has created the whole town in exact the same way. I also think it's weird how the other mother managed to creat a town. If the other mother created the town from what she saw from the dolls eyes (if that's how it works) in past victims, there would problobly be new houses in the town wich means the town people will start asking where they are? (Don't get me wrong I love all of your videos and think your theorys are really intresting and something I will never be able to think of. But I just want an answer and I would be sad if you can't read this cuse my english is bad or you don't understan or you just don't see it. Have a good day!)

Heyyy!!! I'm a new subscriber and I love your coraline vids to no end. I'm a cult follower of any coraline theories and yours (as well as the theorizer #HintWink) spark my interest the most. I've seen the movie upwards of 10 times, but not in over a few months (maybe 5 or 4?). My point is that I'm currently rewatching it with fresh eyes and your theories in mind. That all being said, I just watched the intro and thought of your theory about the well being a portal to the other world and how the cat or wybie had to be the one to receive the doll to give to coraline. I think you're right. In the opening, the beldam creates the coraline doll and released it through a window. What was the significance??? Outside of the window was a sky so dark, filled with stars (like how wybie describes the view from the bottom of the well)!!!! I'm guessing that the other mother released the doll to the well and it went up some kind of way. I'm not sure exactly about that part, but I hope my observation helps!! Continue your videos !

Interestingly enough, in the book Coraline describes the cat's voice as the voice inside her own head, except male. Lots of speculation to be had there, but, so far, I can't make it work with the movie or explain the voice thing - a phone call we didn't see on screen, maybe?

Okay so, the ghost children in the book say that their death didn’t hurt, and the other father says that sewing in the button eyes won’t hurt. This implies that once buttons are sewn into your eyes, you die. Or since you are blinded by the buttons, the beldam doesn’t have to keep creating what you want in the other world. So she can keep you in the closet room thing until you die, yet still feed off of your love.

As a native born Oregonian I chuckled about the cold weather thing. Our coldest weather in the autumn and winter months is nowhere close to the temperatures Michigan receives. As we already know Coraline is from there. I assure you that would be a sweater weather environment especially for a girl that’s used to far colder winters. I do agree that something is up with the trees but I don’t think it’s because it’s supposedly fall and they are just dead. I believe that has to be winter. We have plenty of bushes that keep their dead leaves while the trees will be barren and their drop leaves already mostly decomposed. These details are not as vital by any means but I felt the need to comment (quite late in the game I know.) Thanks for the interesting theories! Tootles.

I'm going through all of your Coraline theory videos, and they are extremely well thought out! Good job! I was just wondering. . .can you definitely say that the whole movie takes place in a few days? What if the passage of time becomes different when Coraline enters the other world? To her, it would seem like a few days have passed as she continuously goes into the other world, but to everyone else, the passage of time is a few months? Her parents don't really seem to pay attention to her with all the writing deadlines and simply assume she's been going to school or hanging out with friends. Just a thought.
