I'm thinking that the reason the house in such bad shape, especially compared to the other apartments, is because Ms Lovat was trying to discourage anyone with kids to stay long and encouage them to leave before the Beldam can strike; because no parents in their right mind would move their children in an enviroment where they are highly likely to get sick or hurt, but since Mel and Charlie are proven to not be A+ parents and seem that desperate they moved in anyways and maybe had plans to fix these things up after the catalague was done and was just hoping their neighbors don't call CPS and Coraline didn't actually get hurt or sick in the meantime

or maybe it’s that mrs. lovat is too afraid of the main unit because that’s where the tunnel is so she never goes in there to see what needs repairs

I think the part where Coraline kills the bugs with her bare hands is foreshadowing to when she defeats the other mother (who is a spider, which is kind of like a bug). It shows she isn’t afraid to get dirty, and isn’t afraid of bugs.

As someone that works in a hospital I can tell you things like neck braces we tend to bring into the rooms in the box…they are brand new for every patient that needs them. They are more than welcome to keep the box for their device if they want to.

I will accept your word as a hospital professional, but, what I have seen/experienced is always an opened (but new) product that the nurse usually applies for you. I never had a neck brace, but I was given a foot brace once and they just brought it in the room fully assembled and showed me how to use it.

I agree with The Theorizer's idea that the blue boy may be related to the Beldam, or at least be someone she cared about considering it's one of the only things in the other world that's still itself in the final scene. While all the furniture has been replaced with bugs, and the picture frame is now a spider, the painting is still of the boy smiling happily, suggesting heavily that the Beldam likes the picture.

My daughter sprained her ankle in May, the hospital gave us a leg brace still in packaging, I just threw away the box like 2 days ago. So sometimes they do give the packaging.

I've seen a few comments about this, so I stand corrected on the box issue. It's weird though, because everything I've personally seen/experienced has NEVER had a box. A nurse brings the item in fully assembled and puts it on for you.

The button the Coraline pushed that turned off the power must've been there when the house was first built. So it's possible when the house was divided into 3 apartments they forgot about it meaning when she pushed the button she briefly turned off the powe for all 3 apartments.

It is so very debatable until that moment before Coraline finds the small door. Like, the bushes/garden COULD be the black cat. And, at this stage, we don't even know if Bobinsky really has mice in his apartment (we never see them in the "real world" areas).

@@TheFangirlWatches Something else I saw mentioned by a few people in this scene, more specifically right before Coraline writes 'water boiler', is that the doll moves its head! (It could just be Coraline moving her arms, but some have pointed out how the movement was too delayed - finding the speed and direction at which it turned to also be really strange.) Of course, it really could've just been from Coraline moving her arms, but I thought it would still be worth mentioning.

I'm thinking Charlie still uses an old computer because he can't afford to upgrade; he might have owned it since Coraline was born, and since the family isn't exactly rolling in money, he had to put necessities before luxuries: if the computer still works, he'll use it until it's completely kaput. As for the neckbrace, maybe Mel got whiplash in an accident and wears it to help with neck-pains, similar to a back-brace. Because if it were a regular hospital neckbrace, she would be moving a bit stiffly and couldn't turn her head if her neck had been broken. (I'm no medical expert, but that's how neck-injuries are usually portrayed)

As a child I lived in a few rentals that were worse than the pink palace. Yes, they exist. And yes, landlords charge rent for these poor conditions. Thing is, they can ask for whatever price they want (usually very cheap) and if some family is desperate enough to agree to it that’s their own problem. Slumlords know there are people out there who have sketchy backgrounds/low income/need a place immediately. Thankfully that is not my life now as an adult, but funny how I didn’t even blink an eye at the condition of the pink palace whenever I watched the movie! Answer to the question: B, Slugzilla. Love your series of videos!

The neck brace box got me thinking about the car accident. What if Mel crashed into other car, hurting the family or persons badly and fled the scene. That would explain the move and she avoided the hospital and bought the neck brace out of pocket to self medicate. That could also explain why they have are constantly working, getting behind on their work since they had to get out of dodge.

I just wanna add in my two cents that its not completely unusual for homes to be in that condition when you move in, especially if its from a lower income neighborhood. Plenty of rental spaces where I'm at are in that condition, I heard stories of blood being in the celings of apartments and landlords not doing anything about it... (I'll let imaginations figure out why that is) or dead rats found in ovens. Even my house has leaky windows that still needs to be fixed, and don't get me started on the piping conditions when I first moved in. 🤭Had to get my ac replaced and the water heating system repaired within the same year! This scene in coraline hits close to home. 😂 All and all good video!

Now the thing about the pink palace being in such a state is she probably pays someone to manage her property and they are either lying as she cant come and inspect herself and the only people who could inform her that the property manager is lying are the jones who are also lying and probably in direct violation of the lease by having a coraline (or Shes just unstated on the lease as she never met her and they never mentioned her) and although the jones family lying on the lease might be grounds for eviction in some cases i am unsure about orgone's renting laws and housing regulations but that is also more evidence for the pink palace limbo as you would think that she would be upset not going to have afternoon lemonade with the jones after figuring out that they lied to her about coraline.

Yes! And picture frames are usually one of the first things to unpack because you want them out of boxes/floors so they don't get damaged. And we SEE the Jones have a picture out at the zoo, so did they not own anything for the walls? This family's habits are so strange!

I was thinking that Mel having the neck brace from somewhere else then the hospital would make a lot of sence. As you said, things gotten at the hospital often turn out to be much more expencive then nessesary. If Mel had been in the car accident and was told by her doctor she has a neck ingury, she could likely have left the hospital by force, and bought herself a cheap one online. Shortly after they would have moved too so she would just continue to wear one until she felt her ingury would be okay. (Of course this if not medically great, but knowing the Joneses like we do, it seems like something they would be willing to try just to spend less money)

The doll definitely moves on its own. The other scene where it was watching coraline and wybie through the window also supports this idea Since it was placed on the chair beside coraline's bed earlier. It was probably made with similar material to spying mice so it must have had the ability to move but acted as a "doll" to keep an eye on coraline.

Very nice series so far :). As to your question about the Pink Palace being a wreck, I don't think any of the other tannest make any comments about the previous renters and they seemed like they have been there a long time. Could there perhaps be some kind of magic keeping the house a wreck and old besides just pure historic age? We know the 'Other Mother" (can't spell her actual name)'s powers have some influence in the 'real world' since she later takes Caroline's parents. Maybe there is also magic keeping the Pink Palace a horrible place to live so that the 'Other world" seems more appealing. If the house was kept up and nice, I feel like the 'Other mother' would need stronger magic lore the kids away. Just a theory/thought. Just job on the video and looking forward to more :).

not to defend Coraline's behavior but when she acts like Mel was yelling at her it sort of makes me think of that saying "he who feels it knows it most" like I remember when I was a little kid (I have anxiety and autism) and a adult would say something or tell me off id feel very vulnerable and like id been "Yelld at" so maybe that's how Coraline feels or maybe mel dose yell at Coraline. also perhaps she is a bit dyslexic or has sensory processing issues and that's why she counted 12 bugs, could be the same about the windows but I always took that scene as her only counting the ones that were leaking so maybe only 12 of them were

Aww, I'm sorry you had that experience (although I'm almost 40 and I still don't like being "yelled" at either, so I sympathize that things can feel bigger to you than the speaker intended). But I did try to count the broken windows and there were like 4-5 of them, so, I'm very lost at why a movie that is so meticulous about details had this kind of error.

I'd guess that the reason Coraline counts some things wrong, as well as the reason she hits the master switch (the sign had fallen, but there was clearly a sign there) is because she's impulsive and doesn't pay full attention. She's a kid who's out of her element and doesn't want to be there. Once she starts piecing the puzzle together, she has become much more observant- almost as if she's finally using the eyes she has, instead of allowing the truth to be replaced with seductive illusions.

Before Coraline receives the doll from Wybie, there is a scene where she puts a garden flower seed on the window. Later on, we will see these flowers again. When Coraline goes to see her dad, we can see the article he is working on his computer screen, which I really like. I also like how Coraline smirks to annoy her dad. Furthermore, when Coraline counts the windows with sad boys in them, the windows are shaped like bugs.

I think the pink palace is so dingy and unkept bc no tenents have ever stayed in the house long enough to live in it so Mrs Lovate didnt know it was so rundown.
