Fun fact: In the book, the tunnel to the other mother was implied to be an eldritch entity that even the other mother was terrified of, and every time Coraline went through, she had an ever-increasing sense that it knew she was there.

I didn't find Coraline creepy. When I watched it, I even had a nice sleep afterwards. Also, fun fact: apparently, the book it was based for was published because the publisher's daughter read it and didn't find it scary. However, years later, she confessed that she WAS scared by the book, but she had to know how the story ended, so she lied.

Did you recognize all the times Coraline escaped through the tunnel to return her real home, but the first time her _other_ parents tuck her in and watch her fall asleep then she wakes up back in reality? I interpret that to mean she never left the other world and is in a purgative state(all aparat events that happened after her real parents passed). I believe the whole scenario of her parents being there at all throughout the movie. Are what Coraline would deem to be the ideal side of her purgatory. Also 'the accident' might reference to the family being in a car wreck on their way to moving across country. But only Coraline survived(initially) and she became stuck as an entity in the Pink Palace, which is why there's scenes with rotting food and her parents being 'gone' for so long. There's even a picture frame of them when Coraline didnt have blue hair; could signify they were better days not so much that it was childhood but the fact it was life. It also seems the residence of the Pink Palace are from different points in time. Add in how they never leave/are never shown leaving to do their performances for the public. Caused me to conclude that even though Coraline gets her parents back. It merely means she/they have control over the estate and are able to move on, be at peace.
@MillyKKitty

Coraline indeed is quite scary for some but is indeed more fun the less scared you are. I love all the tiny details the bug wallpaper in the living room hinting that the house might have belonged to Beldam, Coraline's family had to move because of a car accident, I have speculated that Beldam's family created the house and she says (in the graphic novel at least) that she dug her mother's own grave and kicked her back in when she tried to crawl out. Beldam could've bene locked up in a cell as a child (if she was a human) and had to eat bugs to survive. After killing her own mother she would crave for love and would maybe even sewn buttons on her eyes to be a mother to her dolls 🤔 Perhaps dying from bloodloss and being cursed? AGH, I love making theories >_< So many possibilities!

The reason her eyes look sunken is part of the stop motion process. Coraline has face plates that allow animators to remove one face and replace it with a different one to showcase a facial change. Her eyes do stay in the model though. I recommend watching Nightmare Before Christmas if you haven't seen it.

The movie did end on a cliffhanger the cat went through the sign and the Beldam never died they only threw her hand with the key down the well. And some people think the well leads to the other world because there is a fairy ring around it (the mushrooms) which is known to lead to other realities. So the movie does stay mysterious with uncertainty to whether she is alive or not.

Coraline is scary to me when you think about all of the hidden messages that imply that she could still be there, but it's left up for interpretation, and the signs that the well is probably a portal to the other world. I love the eerie creepiness of this movie, I don't think it's necessarily scary in the normal horror sense, but in a way, it's creepier because it's a kids movie, so there's a juxtaposition.

I remember rewatching Coraline after I first started high school and I kinda understand why she was so sassy and even a bit rude to Wybie (not defending her actions at all, be kind to the people around you) The last time I had moved to a new area and had to make new friends was when I was 6-7 years old and around that time I was incredibly shy since my last school both the kids and even the teachers were jerks to me. But when I was entering high school me and my mom and siblings had to move into an apartment that was pretty small and not so much on the personal privacy area and some of the neighbors were a bit off. And I was very moody and unfortunately I didn’t know how to talk about my feelings without getting snarky or defensive. And I was only thirteen at the time so it wasn’t very easy. And Ik my little brother will be dealing with that as well since we are both moving up to a new state soon. I’ve been graduated from high school for a year now but since I understand what it’s like to have to live in a new place and meet new people and deal with the fact that the friends you had are miles away, hopefully I can help him go through with it. And maybe watching Coraline might help as well. Also I recommend reading the book, it’s much darker but it’s just as cool as the movie

If you pay close attention, in the last scene where everyone is out in the yard planting and tending to the garden, the camera pans out and we see an overhead shot of the property - it’s actually the Beldam’s face (instead of Coraline’s like in the “other world”). This could possibly allude/nod to the fact that she’s still watching over Coraline. There’s still sinister work at play. It just reinforces the overall creepiness of the film; I was definitely one of the kids who was traumatized/completely fascinated by this as a kid...and low-key still am. 👉🏾👈🏾

If the eye's look sunken-in it's probably because they made over 6,000 replacement faces for the the Coraline puppet while making the film. At the time it was some kind of record I think, before being supplanted by Paranorman and Kubo. The eyes might have been a point of release on the puppet for the individual faces so they could be removed more quickly. Yellow looks good on you BTW, even without Blue Hair. :-D

The Other Fathers entire song is warning Coraline about the Other Mothers intentions, to put the button eyes on her and "their eyes will be on Coraline"(could also be warning about the "spy doll"). The Other Father saying "Who's hungry?"and the gloves(given they are controlled by the Beldam)both raise. She's hungry alright.... The Other Garden is filled with flycatchers(the plant the frog comes out of is called a pitcher plant, which flies land in the liquid in the "pitcher"and are dissolved by acid. Fun! The book is far more overt with it, but the Beldam is a Fae(also called a Faerie).Theres a few hints at it through the film, but the main ones are:The food of the Other World is far more delicious to Coraline, the well has a ring around it called a "faerie ring"and the green stone Spink and Forcible give her is an Adder Stone(a magical charm able to see through enchantment and glamours). Theres a scary part of the book that was cut out, which is about the tunnel between the two worlds containing a monster(which we never see)that is older and slow, and more dangerous than the Beldam herself)and the tunnel itself may be the monsters digestive tract. Definitely had a Lovecraftian feel, but I understand why they didn't include it. Better to read, harder to portray onscreen. The Other Father is grinning when Coraline refuses to put on the buttons, and even tries to frighten her further by saying how "it's so sharp you won't feel a thing". This is because he and Other Wybie both care for her. The Beldam did her work too well.

It's a movie about child abduction. Predators use children's ignorance, openness and trust for adults, gaslight them, and eventually hurt them, be it emotionally abusing, assaulting or murder. The Belledame spies on children (stalks them), finds out what they like and lures them in with sweets, games, delicious foods, (deceptively) easy-going and sweet personality, waits til they're at their most trusting and vulnerable, promises to love them and they can live with her in this happy family, then she kills them, hides their bodies, and they are never to be with their families ever again. The use of bright colors, delicious foods, fun games, (false) tenderheartedness of the Other Mother is all a trap for the characters, and essentially the viewer. It's *meant* to lure you in with a false sense of security due to intrigue. It's meant to make you think it's going to be like Alice in Wonderland, but it's more Lovely Bones. *It's not supposed to appear scary, and that's what makes it so disturbing* ; we are manipulated as the viewer, just as the children are in the movie, and children are in real life. I really do love this movie though and rewatch it without getting bored, but it's a terrifying reality.

Well it kinda did leave you on a cliffhanger because at the end you notice the cat disappearing at the end so it just makes you wonder if that world still exists since the cat only has those abilities in the other world.

Wow, I pretty much agreed with your assessments, even the inset eyelids. I've read the book, too. I remember that in the book, Coraline is smaller and completely fearless. I enjoyed your reaction! Love your editing, too. I feel that you express yourself well, even if you might struggle to find the right word in the moment at times - I've certainly been there, and I still struggle. Anyway, great job!

@@SophiaPhannn To be honest, I didn't think of it until after watching the video when I was commenting. I'm always so slow in the moment 😖 I can't overstate though how enjoyable it is to hear your thoughts and commentary. I'm sure I speak for many when I say you have a disarming way of getting our hearts caught up into what you're saying.

I love this movie. This movie and Kubo are my two favorite Lakia stop motion animation movies. The sad part of the ending is that it is an illusion of victory. Coraline has actually lost to The Other Mother at the end and sh3 is now trapped in the Pink Palace Limbo. A KZbinr named The Fangirl has done many videos one this movie saying Coraline actually loses at the end. Once she drops the key down the well she is forever trapped in the limbo and the key is back in the Other Mother realm. Then she creates another doll for her next victim.

I love that this film is made in stop-motion. It's so cool. Also, I reckon she looked for the well bc, at least in my experience, kids in the countryside have nothing to do but explore the areas around their house. That's what I did growing up every weekend on my nan's farm

Coraline is my fav, you should try ParaNorman or Boxtrolls next! Stop motion is the best! You can feel all the hard work that goes into them, I'm pretty sure this movie took like 4 years to finish.

Watching this as a kid must be fun and spooky. I watched it when i turned 30 so it didn't scare me. However, i was disappointed in myself for ignoring it all those years just because it was for kids. This is definitely a great film that anyone can enjoy.

I was scared of Coraline as a kid, but not necessarily because of the movie itself. I had separation anxiety and any movie where the main character left their parents for an adventure freaked me out. This included... most kid's movies.. lol.

I've been looking for a comment/someone like this. My dad would watch this movie every once in a while, and I'd lie on the bed with him to watch. I never was scared of the scenes/characters (I hope one day to have a black cat with no 'true name'), but it was the fear of leaving my parents or never getting to see them again that's stuck with me and my anxiety

My dad was a producer on this movie, so I literally grew up with it. For the first 6 years of my life I actually refused to watch it because I thought it would be too scary, but when I finally did go and watch it, I wasn’t scared at all, and it’s been my favourite animated movie ever since.

They are puppets, it’s stop-motion, and Wybie has scoliosis actually, and the other Wybie wasn’t taken of his clothes, the other mother got rid of him and put the clothes up as a warning to all the other “pawns” of hers to show what happens when u don’t listen.

i don’t care that this is late. so basically, when you were talking about the beldams presence not being entirely gone, well it isn’t. a lot of people have theorized that the hands moving the clouds is a sign that the beldam is still alive. also the fact that the garden looks like the beldam

at the ending discussion, I dont think you realized at the end of the movie the cat used a portal. Which, would not be possible if the Beldam was completely dead, meaning she is actually still alive. Meaning, she most likely still has the key. If she still has the key the well would have to be a portal. Meaning Coraline just gave the key right back to the Beldam. The thrill and hidden theories and secrets in this movie, is fascinating.

THANK YOU. Everyone always goes off about how terrifying and how scarring this movie was for them, and I'm just like "...?" Like, sure, it can be creepy and really, REALLY dark with lots of scary imagery... But it's not really as bad as everyone says it was. I first watched it when I was like... 11? 12? I dunno. But I just saw it as a really cool stop motion movie that felt much more horror based without being actually scary.

Honestly I have a theory that the well and the little door are connected because wybie said that if you fell in you would see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day And in the scene where Coraline comes back after shopping with her mom and goes in the other world you can see that it's night time there even though it was light outside in the real world🤔
