It's puzzling that people are criticising EJ for... being EJ. He's not Hendrix, so what? If you can only judge a performance by how much it sounds like Hendrix, why are you watching an Eric Johnson video? He's gonna sound like himself, regardless of who he's covering. The reason he plays Hendrix is of course that he's influenced greatly by the man, so covering his music in his own style is the greatest tribute imaginable. Eric Johnson is amazing, and Jimi was amazing. It's as simple as that. Try to appreciate different musicians by the music they make, not by whether they sound enough like someone else. You'll find that music will be more enjoyable that way, and not some kind of competitive thing. It's not a competition, it's a form of expression. Treat it as such.

Don't get me wrong Eric is the man!! But!! When Hendrix did this in his time it's impossible to recreate that Hendrix solo magic. I bought the album when it came out and I'm still blown away. Love Eric for keeping Hendrix in the minds of today's generation. Thank you Eric!!!!

This video just goes to show Hendrix' immense talent and genius. Even a seasoned pro like EJ, miles ahead Hendrix in techniuqe, doesn't quite manage to captcher the fluidness and seamless playing Hendrix displayed between clean and fuzz, rhythm, fills and lead. Awsome version by EJ nevertheless, of one of Hendrix' most expressive and dynamic songs, and a great tribute to the Hendrix legacy

One of the things that still impresses me the most is that Hendrix had been playing guitar for what... 14 years by the time he died? I really like EJ's style and playing but no matter how hard he tries, he never quite reaches that wild abandonment Jimi had when playing. The roar, the style, the sound. EJ is always too "clinical", too concerned about hitting the right notes and staring too much at the fretboard. Jimi became the guitar when he played.

To appreciate Jimi Hendrix you have to understand ... it's composition and creativity plus originality... if you understood what was taking place Jimi created textures and cinematic imagery with just a guitar, amp a fuzz face and some delays ! Songs like "1983 A Merman I should turn to be" and "All around the Watchtower" were done in 1968 to 1970 ... we're talking 48 yrs ago... with all the modern toys available for guitarist today name one that's writing ground breaking original songs that have totally changed the landscape.. you have guys that are faster players and considered better technicians but check their song writing skills... nothing like the "Wind Cries Mary" or "Machine Gun" - they don't have the visionary creativity chops... "After all the Jacks are in their boxes and the clowns have all gone to bed... you can hear happiness staggering down the street... footprints dressed in red... And the wind cries Mary"... c'mon bro those lyrics are classic !

I’m not a musician let alone a guitarist. If I was a guitar player I don’t think I would attempt to play anything by Hendrix. Then again maybe in the beginning and when reality sinks in I think I would abandon the thought and stay in my comfort zone.
@tommccarthy30523 жыл бұрын
Well...I am a musician and a guitarist and absolutely learned to play some Hendrix tunes. If you don't challenge yourself you won't grow as musician. In the end if you get a little bit of something out everything you listen to and try to play and fold it into whatever you do then you respect the past and try to build on it. Your comfort zone is what you define it as really.
