needs more cowbell ! 😋 Needs voice training. it sounds to lite to feminine, more rasp more manly. sounded good until he brought in the Cliffs of Dover riffs into a Jimi tune. But then again when Steve Vai started singing in his cuts, he didn't have that good of a singing voice either. Just my opinion ! Don't get me wrong I enjoy both guitar players. I just watch this video, every time, in utter awe of Eric's command of the instrument. An exact replication of Jimi's original backwards solo, executed perfectly and seemingly effortlessly. Notes gliding into feedback whenever Eric wants them to. VERY few players have been here, on Eric's level, during this phase of his career. An absolute master. Went to "The Experience" gig with a buddy a couple of years ago in Ottawa. Did not know who Eric Johnson was. During his set when I heard the first few notes of "Are You Experienced" I leaned over to my buddy and snidely commented "this should be good, the guy will be way out of his league on this one". JFC was I wrong ! Much like this rendition, EJ nailed the shit out of it; best Hendrix cover I ever heard ! [Love that this is on KZbin for all to see]. Immediately went out the next day and bought his CDs/DVDs. Amazing guitarist/artist; possibly the best 'tone' I've ever heard somebody get out of a guitar. If you get the chance, don't miss seeing this guy live.

It's been a while, but I feel privileged to have seen Eric Johnson play live six times in the mid 1980's. He played this the first time I saw him which was at the annual KTXQ (Q102) free concert in Dallas at which the Fabulous Thunderbirds were the headliners. I was supposed to see him play a seventh time, but for some reason did not go. That night Stevie Ray Vaughn jumped up on stage and jammed with Eric, and I missed it! A few weeks later Stevie Ray was no longer with us...

Jimi Hendrix himself never played the same piece of music that he wrote the same way twice. So maybe that's where the criticisms are coming from and in that case I guess they would be justified. This is a very controlled rendition. Jimi Hendrix was not necessarily about control and perfection ONLY. He was about wildness and lack of abandon COMBINED with control if that makes any sense. Jimi Hendrix playing was like a force of nature. There was no holding back. That's what made him who he was.

I must have watched this hundred times, and the singular emotion doesn't ebb. The song is testament to JH's endless greatness, and EJ's rendition is his interpretation. With the recent loss of EVH, we need to hold tight to the fact that there are still other amazing guitar players still around. I have this ACL concert on VCR somewhere in this house - lol. It was my first time to ever see Eric and I fell madly in love. Not just because he is adorable, but watching him play is mesmerizing. Eric is an astounding guitarist. I have been fortunate enough to see him live several times and he never fails to amaze the audience with his music and skill. I also got to meet him at the HOB in Myrtle Beach about 12-13 years ago and he was very friendly and down to earth. We talked a while, took some pictures, and he signed my original Tones LP among other things that I now display with the memorabilia in my music room. He even sent me a couple of his guitar picks in the mail a couple of weeks later! One of my favorite musicians...

So we was all sittin' around one day thinking what can we possibly do that in 35 years will make a bunch of people talk critically negative about it and make suppositions as to whether Jimi Hendrix would like it or not and wait for people to critically massacre us in Hendrix' name. Come on man. Did you ever have any fun? Were you ever a kid? We're just enjoying ourselves. It' wasn't no big deal to try show off or anything like that. Eric Johnson has NO apologies to make to anyone. He made his mark in music. Where's yours? He's one of the most influential guitarists in history. EVERY SINGLE GUITARIST PLAYING TODAY...is playing his licks...and his style is so distinctive, that when they do it's like red ink on a black and white page. That's exactly what is WRONG with music and music appreciation today. It's not a contest. We did this because it was fun and we thought it sounded remarkably great and thought OTHERS might also enjoy it, the latter being the biggest part. Eric knows the ins and outs of Hendrix's playing better than anyone on the planet and he emulates a certain aspect of that better than anyone else on the planet. No one is Jimi Hendrix and no one is Eric Johnson...yet there's sure a LOT of people out there trying. Regarding some responses and discussions below.... Eric learned how to do this before there WAS DVD or ... TAB....he learned this by deciphering it by ear WHEN IT CAME OUT...his ear was that good. When he learned this as a kid nobody would have even dreamed of trying it. You can't understand what 1967 was like if you didn't live it at 13 years old. He also played the vinyl backwards to learn what the standard blues licks were that Hendrix played forward and flipped the tape on. Knowing that, he could reverse the fingering. and add the swells in the proper places to simulate the sound of the playing being backwards. You guys all have it easy these days. Now anyone can play "just as good as Eric"...yeah after he showed you how...but they're not him and there is a lot more to playing music than being able to build a model airplane from instructions. The art today is learning to recognize the difference. He can do this with nothing but a fuzz face and a strat and a marshall. The truth is...even with Hendrix the music was the vehicle...what people were really interested in was HIM...it's the same with Eric or anyone else who gets to a certain level. I'm sure Andy Aldort did a great job of explaining it. Having been in the room when we worked this up the very first time FOR FUN in a steaming hot 10' x 20' rehearsal space, with a 7 foot ceiling and carpet on the walls...with Eric's FULL ACL rig taking up 3/4 of the room played at exactly the same volume....NO ONE had done it before like that. We were just screwing around between songs and Eric jokingly did the intro rubbing the strings and if memory serves it was Reggie Witty on bass and they did it together and I was like wow! Eric said he could play the backwards solo...I was like you're kidding?....so we just tried it and it sounded great so we kept it. The first time we played it live, jaws hit the floor and they're probably still stuck to it in that room. We weren't doing it to be put up as targets for people to take pot shots at. What's the point? Take all that energy and go make your own history. This is a similar scenario to trying to explain to someone born in the 90s the difference between the day before and the day after everyone heard the Are You Experienced LP....you can't create that understanding because they've all seen Van Halen...and Steve Vai and Yngwie and Shawn Lane and everybody else for that matter. Before Jimi Hendrix and Are You Experienced it was Blues Magoos..."We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet." That was the bar. We went from "Surfin' USA" to "Third Stone From the Sun" in a day. The leap has never been eclipsed, yet kids will try and tell me that Jimi Hendrix wasn't a very good guitar player. yeah...okay. I'm just glad I was there the day it came out. Most people will never feel that awe.

This guy does just pure justice to the song. Johnson is an artisan on the guitar extracting music and life out of strings just like Hendrix did.

His rendition is just awesome. Particularly the lead starting at 1:42, he meticulously replicates with technique and the volume knob what Jimi recorded and then played backwards for the final recording...wicked! Very nice job. Excellent guitar tone and execution of guitar song. Eric's own insertion moving into the end of the song was very nicely played and tone and effect subtly applied. This is my first listen to Eric and I liked it just fine. I am a DIE-HARD Hendrix fanatic who got my first album (Are You Experienced?) when it first hit the American market. I do not criticize those that play his songs in any rendition, shape, or form. No matter how many differently styled, incredible guitarists are out there now (all deserving credit for their fine gifted skills), Jimi will always rule as tops to me. I myself have performed some of his songs with great skill and surprise to the audience but will always remain reverent to the "Original". Every good boy deserves favour. Everybody out there, please keep playing Jimi's music and do your best. You all deserve a GREAT BIG HAND! Footnote: all must understand, even those who criticize (mostly persons whose parents may not even have born before Hendrix died) should have a right to their say even if they have no idea what they're talking about. Those of us that know, know. Peace to all.

I've had the privilege of seeing Eric Johnson 5 times, and met him a few times. Just saw him last month. Easily one of the 3 best guitarists I have ever seen and I've seen most of them. This may not be the best representations of how he gets into his music, but he sure does. Being an advanced musician myself, I feel like while I'm enjoying him play, I'm also learning. I also know he was a friend of SRV and has the utmost respect for him and Hendrix. Keep it going EJ!
