Core Design Principles for Successful Cooperation: What Are They? How Can They Be Implemented?
David Sloan Wilson and Jeremy Lent in conversation
In this Deep Transformation Network Live Interactive Conversation, Jeremy Lent discusses with David Sloan Wilson the work he has done to discern humanity’s core design principles for successful cooperation.
As world-renowned evolutionary biologist David Sloan Wilson has established, evolution can best be explained as a process of multilevel selection, where successful cooperation within groups has driven the major evolutionary phase transitions.
As our civilization faces existential risks of ecological breakdown, mind-boggling inequality, and toxic polarization, it becomes increasingly clear that humanity must rediscover and augment its evolved capacity for cooperation if we are to shift our trajectory toward a flourishing future.
We explore how Nobel laureate Elinor Ostrom’s “eight rules for managing the commons” became a starting point for David to develop more generalized principles for successful cooperation in various domains of human activity at all scales (from small groups to the planet) and contexts (e.g., education, business, the environment).
And we consider how these principles can be applied in practice to help catalyze the deep transformation our society needs.
