As our civilization careens toward a precipice of climate breakdown, ecological destruction, and gaping inequality, people are losing their existential moorings.
The worldview of modernity is one of disconnection. It tells us we are split between mind and body, separate from each other, and at odds with the natural world-and it’s driving us toward catastrophe.
This worldview has passed its expiration date-but what comes next?
In this Deep Transformation Network interactive conversation, Jeremy Lent discusses with poet, philosopher, and activist Bayo Akomolafe how we can inhabit the troubling yet potentially liberating space between worlds. “What if the way we act,” Bayo asks, “actually serves to reproduce the same conditions we are striving to escape?”
As we feel the compelling urge to rectify injustice and visualize a life-affirming future for humanity on a regenerated Earth, Bayo asks us to ponder questions that are both unnerving and potentially liberating:
“What could it mean to slow down in times of urgency?”
“What if the ways we respond to the crisis are part of the crisis?”
“What does activism look like at the end of hope?”
In this session, we explore these questions among others, as we inquire into the possibilities that might just arise from letting go of our convictions and surrendering to the disarray of the interstitial.

I remember taking a statistics course in college and always thinking that the goal of a study to focus on and find a trend that follows a line or curve was like… intentionally defying the most interesting pieces- the outliers- which were basically just kinda shaved off as errors or anomalies that didn’t threaten the curve they found because they were few. But I thought those outliers will tell us more about our curve than any point obediently following it.

The idea that YOUR image of the so-called ecological future is exactly what Bayo is speaking about. What if you can't control, know, understand what future is "good"?

This is such an enlightening and life-giving conversation. The rupture, the cracks, spillage, secretions...it is all so sensuous. Thank you Bayo for bringing these stories, curiosities and ways of beings together.
