This is a really well done comparison. Because the 1235u is often for sale around the same price Of the ryzen 5600u and this really puts it into perspective how close they are. Someone mentioned that the H series would be a lot better, of course it is, it also cost a lot more to, I think this is a good apples to apples comparison of the U series for both. 12th gen really is a big leap ahead of 11th gen and I think either one outside of gaming would be a good choice for anybody.

I am hesitating alot for a laptop and this comparaison was very helpful, thank you. I was concerned with the lower L1 and L2 cache of the Ryzen, but it dosen't translate in lower gaming performance. Since the laptop option with Ryzen 5625U core is much cheaper ( 650 vs 800 ), I'll endure the smaller 2X4GB soldered ram. I think it has an open spot for another ram stick anyway if I really want more ( keeping in mind the RAM stick must be of a compatible model ). Plenty of games to comfortably run with that anyway. Again, great detailed analysis.

If u want to do gaming you need at least 16gb ram and it should be dual channel caus the igpu shares the ram and dual channel ram is a big boost in performance

Hey James, in this video does the i5-1235U have the integrated Intel Iris Xe, or the older Intel UHD graphics built in? Just did some reading as saw that some 12th Gen processors come with the older Intel UHD integrated graphics setup, and was curious if this had any impact on results. I'm still shopping around for the right laptop for myself and wondered about this. Many thanks!

The i5-1235U has the same Iris XeE with 80 EU as the 11th generation Core i5 chips. The 12th generation i3 graphics is branded as UHD - its the same Xe LP Architecture but with only 64 EUs enabled - a slight increase vs. the 11th generation i3 models which were 48 EU.

Can you say something about the thermals of both chips? I've just bought a Dell Vostro with the Ryzen 5 5625u, but it heats A LOT. I don't know if it's the chip's fault or a design flaw by Dell, but I'm actually considering returning it (it has 14 days return policy) and getting the i5 1235u version instead, even if the performance will be slightly worse. The one I got heats up so much that it's actually uncomfortable to use, and Dell made the cooling in such a way that all the hot air is being blown STRAIGHT at the display, which I'm concerned may damage the display in the long term

I wouldn't expect a particular difference in performance in this case - both have similar cooling solutions and displays are the same resolution. Both operate in more or less the same power ranges as well. Of course an apples-to-apples comparison would have been better, but I buy these systems myself and record reviews and disassembly/upgrade guides, so wanted one of each. I was happy making the comparison though - if you look inside the 16" version (kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3jbkoOkbtaYmqs) you can actually see there is a load of dead space as the 14" and 16" internals are basically the same, the 16" just has a longer cable to attach the I/O board on the left side.

Amd ryzen is on a highly power optimized EUV manufacturing process thanks to TSMC where as intel 7 process is multi patterning manufacturing process that's less effective in low power chips. For that reason ryzen can drive clock speeds higher without spending a lot of power intel needs to keep clock speed lower to reduce powerconsumption. Single core 5500u < 1135g7 < 5600u < 1235u . For programming any of the above cpu is fine, however intel tends to be better for python a bit. For programming apart from cpu ram is also important and if win 11 os 8 gb is not sufficient and min is 16 gb. Better to ensure it is upgradable upto 32gb to be future proof - not mandatory but better. With amd you get more cores and little weak cores, whereas in Intel you get less cores and stronger cores. For programming any cpu would do fine, not much difference and like said above ram is another important factor.
