Yep the limpets have the intelligence of a dead parasite. They will die from crashing into the rock and its often because chunks will end up clipping into the asteroid fragments from time to time. If you need to defuse a charge it also eliminates the fissure it was in.

Very well done video, thank you for your attention to detail. One thing I noticed in other videos was when people prospect the asteroid it had a different yield than what they got during the core mining, and while watching your I noticed the core detected at the bottom since you are using a hud colouration that actually lets me see lol. Answered my main question indirectly so thank you.

I had a terrible experience my first time out trying this. I found my first ever core asteroid, low temp diamonds. I set my charges and amazingly I got it right. I almost blew myself up because I didn't get away fast enough but, hey, it was my first time. Then I panicked because my limpets weren't collecting anything. I'd left my cargo scoop closed. No problem, fixed that. Then my limpets were dying instantly. I was shaken up by almost dying and hadn't noticed I'd stopped right above another asteroid that was instantly destroying my limpets. No worries, I moved. Then finally, as they start collecting and bringing back diamonds, I get an error message. I'd forgotten to install my refinery before I left the station. I had to abandon everything.

@OrbitalJeffo
@OrbitalJeffo Жыл бұрын
For sure! Your aim is to reach that "optimal range" indicated by the band. So placing a high charge in a low fissure is going to cause that graph to jump higher. For example, if I'm just barely under the band and I need just a little more explosive, I'll put a low or medium charge into a high strength fissure. It's about how much the fissure resists your explosive charge. Hope I explained it clearly enough.

Good tutorial, but at 8.26 you mentioned that every fragment picked up was 1 ton(ne), this is not the case, some maybe, but most are just under a ton(ne), just in case someone thought they were doing something wrong. a good haul per asteroid is 17 or 18 ton(nes). Another point to mention to new players would be to not frame shift drive between hotspots (stay at just one hotspot per trip), as that will trigger npc pirates to come and scan you again, and if you carry any cargo other than limpits, they will attack. Happy mining.
@OrbitalJeffo
@OrbitalJeffo Жыл бұрын
Specifically for core mining, I've never not had a rock generate a full cargo unit (i.e. pick up 14 rocks, you'll have 14 units to sell), but you might be right about it being exact. Excellent advice about retriggering NPC pirates. I think I mentioned them on first drop, but probably should have elaborated about dropping back in after having mined. o7!
@tay999uk
@tay999uk Жыл бұрын
@@OrbitalJeffo perhaps I am doing something wrong, looking at the percentages in the refinery as each fragment comes in, some are as low as 50% others 95%, Iv'e not been watching long enough yet to actually see a 100% fragment. But I do get a lot of exceeded charge messages even though I detonate within the sweet spot, maybe that's got something to do with it. o7 CMDR.
@OrbitalJeffo
@OrbitalJeffo Жыл бұрын
@tay999uk I dont think you're doing anything wrong... Cores (the blow up kind) should yield a near full cargo unit. Subsurface mining is smaller definitely and takes a few to get a cargo unit. Maybe they changed something though? I hope not. Also I'm pretty sure the majority of the "exceeded" messages are bugs. Get it in the blue and you should be good. If you're on PC, add Melloca and maybe we can go mine some time. o7!
@CryptoTonight9393
@CryptoTonight9393 Жыл бұрын
I have to agree with this comment. It's usually 3 chuncks deposited before I get a "mineral refined" message and I'll often leave an asteroid with a partially filled bin in my refinery 🤷‍♂️
@Halloween111
@Halloween111 8 ай бұрын
Once upon a time, if your detonation was too low, you got a 2nd crack at it if there was a fissure left. You didn't get the yield of a successful detonation, but it was something. I tried that last night (Been a while and I'm out of practice) and the charges just bounced off. I guess the consolation prize 2nd crack has been taken out?

The icy cores will always be that popcorn shape, just the core contents will vary. I missed it in my narration, so I put it on the screen, the other cores (like metallic) have their own shape, it's sort of oblong. I pay closer attention to that bright color that pops out, then I look to see if it's the special shape, and if it is I have a pretty good feeling it's a core. If in doubt, just shoot it with a prospector! Thanks for watching!

@TheCammerhammer
@TheCammerhammer 2 жыл бұрын
One thing to bear in mind when you're shooting your seismic charges is that they have travel time from when you fire them to when they attach. This can become an issue when the asteroid is rotating, especially at a high speed, so you might have to "lead" your shots a bit (shoot a tiny bit ahead of the fissure instead of directly at it. If the asteroid is spinning too quickly you might have to move on and try another, but almost all core asteroids can be successfully split given enough patience and skill.
@OrbitalJeffo
@OrbitalJeffo Жыл бұрын
I apologize for not seeing this earlier, hopefully you've gotten this answered, but I would probably echo the other reply. There is a lead time, which 'should' be indicated with the little leading target circle (if you have your targeting set to leading on your ship options, right panel). If they're landing in the fissure area they 'should' be adhering, but even then sometimes I have some bounce off occasionally. o7 CMDR!

@OrbitalJeffo
@OrbitalJeffo 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I would base your decision on a) what sort of module space you need (you can always swap out the different types of mining equipment, you don't have to bring all like on my ship) and b) how much cargo you'll also be able to carry keeping in mind you'll need to bring limpets as well. c) take a look at the maneuverability score on the ship, better maneuvering is a benefit when in a ring. With those things in mind you should be able to select a ship you like. Thanks for watching, o7!

If you can do missions/short trade runs/basic combat to earn yourself about 12 million credits, get yourself an Asp EXPLORER (do not, for the love of heaven, get the Asp Scout). It's usually around 6 mill to buy, then if possible you want an A rated FSD and a good fuel scoop, plus everything else. The Asp will be your stepping stone to get yourself a Python--and then you have it made. The python is one of the best ships in the game in terms of multirole capabilities. Despite being a medium-sized ship, it has cargo capacity that rivals many large ships, so it can still make tons of money selling to outposts and ground settlements that don't have large landing pads. Once you have a Python, the galaxy is your oyster, and you can use it to get whatever ship you want.

Solo play is just so other players cannot see/interact with you - the asteroids are shared between all levels - so wait 6 hrs for the clouds to go and the core asteroids to reappear or fly out to the edges and try there where others who are in "parallel universes" are not doing their thing - 1 resource shared amongst all makes it a little harder to do core mining -
