I'm glad to see someone address this topic. The points you make are important. In my view: Short hooks are basically like Wing Chun elbows to a degree. The roundhouse style punches are indeed easier to check because they are more visible upon entry. In Wing Chun we look to take balance of the opponent upon contact [while sending our force to their "center"]; this limits their response, and this is why our elbows are often down and "fixed" so we can drive with our "center" and mass [and continue to close until we invade their "base"]. Your bicep stop: The Pak Sao [with relaxation and absorption] is incredibly effective to jam longer hooks under the inside bicep. I taught this to my nine year old [at the time] daughter and she left a nice purple bruise on my arm with the same relaxed force and technique despite me ramping up power. The harder we hit, the more damage we take to ourselves against this Pak Sao technique. I sometimes cut forward with a Wu Sao which folds at the wrist on contact [also hitting the same inner arm point where the nerve bundles are]. Love the headbutt follow off the Pak Da. The silat approach definitely weds well with Wing Chun. It's better, in my opinion, to close the distance and jam their weapons [which taking their balance on contact]. The range game is a game of resetting with each encounter; this is how anyone can get caught. I'm glad you address this. One element of the traditional Wing Chun stance is "off-centering" or "off-setting" the opponent's line of attack upon entry [which maintaining our own center and line toward them]. Using spine rotation and hip swivel to feel and displace force [almost like we're "swimming" forward with each movement] makes it very difficult for an opponent to put linear force directly into our mass or center. The problem is most neglect this idea and don't actually use the proper stance. But as we drive forward we keep in mind the "apex" of the triangle and split their energy so they cannot resist. I have done this against people close to a foot taller and 100 pounds heavier and it truly is very effective. I was able to take them wherever I wanted using very little "force", but rather focusing on driving from the gearbox of the hips [and knee placement, alignment]. Great video and thank you. Definitely things to think about.

these are great tutorials. I've taken very little silat but when you add it to the Wing Chun, I really can see it boost Wing Chun. The lady's hooks are legit. I spar with young kids that do NOT like to use their hips/torques and they get mad when I can block with short bursts (that looks like nothing but I am using my whole body to block). and it is funny how you tell them it is hips, footwork, body and not just arms. They look at me like I am an idiot and then keeps complaining. Love your channel. Great contents, always.

I don’t know if Imi Lichtenfeld knee anything about Wing Chun, but the occasional similarities between Wing Chun and his Krav Maga are pretty striking. The “360 defense,” bursting, and simultaneous attack and defense of KM bears an uncanny resemblance to the techniques shown in this video. The differences: We don’t seek to place our palm on our attacker’s biceps when he launches a hit - we either helmet cover or strike the biceps with the outer portion of our forearms at a bit greater than a ninety degree angle - and our strikes are far less complex than those of Wing Chun, but the similarities are still very stark.

What are your thoughts of Elbows vs Short hooks within a close ranger system. What may be the advantages for each....Love your stuff by the way...

Lateral elbows in Wing Chun are two-fold: forward and backward in quick succession [though there are exceptions with angular or downward collapsing elbows]. If one practices range on the Wooden Dummy [using spine force and hip swivel] both short hooks and relaxed elbows are devastating. There are many kinds of strikes and all have their purpose and place. If in a life-and-death situation, I would lean toward elbows because it's easy to double each strike [forward, then backward] VERY quickly. I would only do this against an armed opponent in a life-or-death situation because it's far more difficult to gauge and control elbow force; we are likely to severely hurt or kill our opponent [IF we know how to properly use a relaxed elbow]. A hook is preferred in a "fair" fight to maneuver and come around the guard. Elbows are often easier to land once in Wooden Dummy range because we can use contact and roll over and forward and pull them into our strikes. Ming has shown this on more than one occasion. Elbows to the body and ribs and certain points are underrated and underrepresented by most. Please train these carefully. I'm sure Ming's forthcoming video will more clearly demonstrate and explain the concepts I'm attempting to [poorly] explain. In a regular fight it's easier than people realize to seriously hurt or kill an opponent with striking [especially if one head-hunts and their opponent falls onto the ground and break their necks or skulls]. Also, hooks are more likely to damage our hands if we don't train proper form, alignment. So the elbow does have a certain structural advantage. All the best!

Push shuffle & jab would intercept a hook no problem. I spare with fighters (MMA/Muay Thai) with no existence of Jkd at all. And most of their hooks are wide. I can score a hit with footwork alone.

Great vid! Wrestlers use non-commital feint hooks before suddenly dropping levels for takedown, so keep those elbows tucked and loaded

At what distance would you, if you would, switch from hooking fists to forearms or elbows?

One where your base isn't compromised (meaning top-heavy, over your lead feet structure). So, each attacking tool would require that adjustment to base, though the dynamic movement of the opponent can often compensate.
