This was a perfect take on Mara Jade and why she was such an interesting character in Legends. Heck her competence as complexity as a character outside of her eventual connection to Luke was why she ended up being a much more interesting love interest for him than a character like Calissta. Mara Jade had an incredible redemption arc, regardless of Luke. Further she did basically become a Jedi on her own without him, as she co-trained with Kyle Katarn. That said, she could still have a relationship with Luke, just here where she doesn't marry him. Just look at Hera and Kanan, relationship but not married. So problem solved. All we have to do is have them in a relationship, then Luke kinda break it off like he kinda did in the Jedi Academy trilogy by ignoring her to focus on the other students. Mara takes it personally, like she did in Legends and doesn't come back to him. Hell, she could even still have his kid, like they breakup shortly before Ben falls... then finds out she's pregnant. Say with Jaina Skywalker. Now, we'll get a Skywalker blood Ben, Jacen, and Jaina in Legends and Canon. Or as you said, Mara gets coomb spores and has to leave for medical treatment, while Luke can't leave his students as he's literally the only other Jedi Knight/Master besides Mara. She doesn't get better until long after Ben Solo falls and Luke dies. Thus explaining her absence.

@@dogloversrule8476 I personally don't see how Mara Jade getting sick leads to Rian Johnson's bastardization of Luke's character, by making him attack his own family without provocation. If anything it's best to just chalk that one up to Palpatine manipulating Luke's mind. At most, let's say, Plus Luke could have let his disciplined mind wonder due to Mara's condition. Though personally i prefer the idea that Palpatine snuck into Luke's mind via his bond with Mara and then Mara's bond with Luke without either being aware of it. Luke though never putting it together afterwards due to not realizing Palpatine is alive but instead thinking he became his father. Or they could just play up Palpatine's skills by saying he just gained a ton of experience entering the mind of unaware force users due to having Mara Jade as his Hand for nearly 20 years. With Luke just not having that much experience against mental manipulation because nearly every other darksider or Jedi to train with was dead... and Mara Jade was never the type to want to manipulate others minds after her ordeals and Leia basically quit being a Jedi (also due to bad writing).

@@jonathanryan9946 I’m not saying it’s great, I’m just saying that it could help explain why Ryan Johnson’s mess did what it did. @jonathanryan9946 Жыл бұрын
@@dogloversrule8476 Luke's character arc really doesn't work with a mental illness storyline (maybe Ben Solo or Jacen Solo, but definitely not Luke). At best I'd say it could lead into a fear of becoming his father, possibly a thought left in his mind by Palpatine. Though, obviously the best solution, is to just retcon the Sequels and chalk them up as a force vision. Afterall, Kathleen Kennedy can't run Lucasfilm forever (and hopefully after Indy 5 looking like a total flop, will be leaving very soon) and she's basically the main proponent of the Sequels... nearly every one else sees them for being very misguided in regards to their interpretations of the Original trilogy characters. Heck, make post RotJ Legends and the Sequels into two different sets force visions Luke gets while he trains with the Force Priestesses from season 6 of TCW. Both containing elements of possible futures they want to both warn him about to avoid and with different parts of each simultaneously guide him towards. Think of Legends kinda like hints of the path to take and the Sequels being like Yoda's trial in that CW arc, where it's more a dark future they want him mentally prepared for so they make Luke witness himself failing. So for example, Luke will see how bad his Jedi Academy will turn out if he tries to do it all himself like what happened in the Sequels, while simultaneously trying to guide him to allowing the training of anyone regardless of age like what happened in Legends. That way he can get help running his Academy, especially from Mara Jade and Ahsoka, as neither will be afraid to call him out on anything they see as wrong. Plus as both timelines had Thrawn and Palpatine returning, plus darksiders trying to turn his nephews he's now forewarned that that is how his future enemies will strike (and I'm personally a fan of Leia and Han having the kids from both timelines, so neither camp feels backstabbed, and to throw fans for a loop. Then hooking up Luke and Mara a bit sooner so they too can have Ben Skywalker sooner plus several other kids... heck maybe even adopting too as a wink and a nod to Rey, instead of her terrible Sequel plotline basically immediately retconning it from the getgo so now she's trained way earlier... plus being related to Palpatine will give Mara Jade one heck of an arc with her). As Dave Filoni seems to be working with Timothy Zahn and can always call Jon Favreau back once Kathleen Kennedy is gone, we'll kinda get a triumphant of qualified people who can fix what Kathleen Kennedy broke. If we get so lucky with them fixing post RotJ, then hopefully we can start to ignore the High Republic and instead call Drew Karpyshyn and Chris Avellone to setup the Old Republic era with Nomi Sunrider (probably with a name change due to Sunrider being trademarked by Jeep), Darth Revan, and Meetra Surik.

The problem with adding Mara Jade now is who will she be the foil too? What made her great was how she was a reflection of a Luke who went to the Empire. She offered insight into those who believed in the order and stability of the Empire without being pure evil. She was a force user who experienced strong emotion and yet wasn't controlled by it. She brought back into the cannon the smuggler side of Star Wars with Talon Karrade now that Han was respectable. But the main reason she was great was the discussions she caused in the Fandom about the Force and nature of evil. But there currently is strong hero character like Luke from Legends for her to be balanced against. People focus on the wife part because in my opinion she was the only character in legends who match Luke Skywalker and be his equal and not be overshadowed by him. If the brought her in the Disney cannon she will seem like a Mary Sue because in my opinion the level of competence of characters in Disney's cannon is very low. They would have to strip away a lot of the core parts of Mara Jade to make her fit. They had a chance to tell a similar story through Finn, one reason he is a fan favorite, and botched that up royally so I don't trust Disney with her character.
@matternativ Жыл бұрын
She doesn't necessarily need to be a foil to anyone in particular but she could be one for Ahsoka, Ezra or Cal if it can not be Luke. What I find more interesting is the idea of seeing her grow up under palpatines guidance, maybe we even see the Hidden Path fail to get to her. The other reall good opportunity is to have her become a sort of advisor for Rey and Finn as the Obi-Wan type mentor role. Her being not nearly as dogmatic as the prequel Jedi could help steer the New Jedi Order in a fresh direction and Rey has someone to talk to who was around and witnessed how the previous attempt failed.

I can understand the frustration with people only thinking of Mara Jade as Luke's wife. Indeed, she is complex and her being Luke's wife specifically doesn't define her. Like a comment before said, she can still be the wife of Luke Skywalker just a breakup though I'm not sure if I've seen a successful couple or marriage in Star Wars via the new canon so that would be refreshing. I'm almost done with the last book in the Legacy of the Force series, and I've noted a few things about Mara. Although she has her moments of jealousy and tough talk, she's still a great mother and deeply cares for her son. So much so in fact she gave Darth Caedus the fight of his life and even though she admits she couldn't beat him in a lightsaber duel, she chose the battle ground and structured it to give her an advantage. Despite many characters not being simply classified by their relationship, people's character is shown through how they interact with others and their relationships. She can still fit into Canon whether the wife of Luke or not, the mother of Ben or not, the assassin of the emperor or not.

I'm just delving into the EU. Just finished the first Thrawn trilogy where Mara is introduced. She's an interesting character so I understand why people love her. Frankly I would prefer that she stays Luke's foil and eventual partner. But then that's because I absolutely despise how Luke was portrayed in the sequel trilogy. He basically went on to make the same damn mistakes that Yoda and The Jetta canceled did in not having attachments. That's bullshit and definitely bound to imbalance Jedi knights making them susceptible to the dark side. It is attachments that grounded Luke and gave him the ability to overcome palpatine's evil. It's what led to Palpatine's downfall when Anakin finally turned back to the light because he loved his son and didn't want him to die. Having said that, the time for the OT characters is gone. Carrie Fisher is gone. Harrison Ford is too old. Mark Hamill unfortunately had his character ruined. We've been able to see some cgi de-aged Luke in the spin-off series but that's not the future of Star Wars. And because Mara Jade's character is so intertwined with the Skywalker family, I'm not sure you can bring her back and it not be a ghost of what she is in the EU. There was time to bring her into Canon. It would have made a more realistic background story for Luke the hermit if she and their son had been killed by kylo Ren. And ultimate betrayal of the family within the family. That would drive any optimistic hero into a pessimistic hermitage. But you can blame Rian Johnson for writing shitty stories. Unfortunately I just don't think there's any coming back for that.😢😢

It will always be an adaption anyways if we are talking about Legends stuff being adapted into Live action. After all, Marvel did not disown their old comic books but they have adapted whatever they like from those into Live Action. Yes I know Lucas looked at Legends as a seperate thing, I do think LucasFilm is wrong in just doing like Marve. Basically, if it's good, use it. Or maybe they have begun to do that now. No disrespect to George intended but he did sell Lucasfilm and all it's properties.

@jipjomon12 күн бұрын
e.corellius is sort of right in that it wasn't a matter of "not good enough", but I think they're still characterising it from a place of imagined victimhood. It was clearly a business/marketing decision and you can follow the train of logic very easily: Lucas wants to sell Lucasfilm -> Disney is interested, he pulls the trigger and gets his bag -> Disney want to make their money back ASAP by having Lucasfilm make Star Wars sequel movies -> 99% of general audiences have not read the post-ROTJ EU and very few directors/screenwriters would want to work with the baggage of dozens of novels of continuity -> like Lucas before her with his ST concepts, Kennedy decides these new movies won't be in continuity with the EU novels -> a new continuity is created for these new movies and their tie-ins to take place in. At no point was the quality of the novels even relevant: every single one could've been a Stover/Luceno banger and they would still have been put aside for any sequel trilogy that would have ever been made. It wasn't a value judgement on the novels, or the people who enjoy them (evidently, given many people writing for the Disney continuity are themselves big fans of the EU).

The model that they used for Mara also had a deteriorating health condition. I would like to see a Mara Jade like character who’s in a romantic relationship with Luke in canon, if for nothing else than to give him a better reason for losing his mind. Cause the current explanation doesn’t make much sense. As far as she can’t get married to Luke since “Luke doesn’t get married.” Well, Lucas signed off on that story. So I just chalk it up as Luke didn’t get married in Lucas’ canon, which was episodes 1-6 and Lucas was getting tired of being asked questions about the EU, which he oversaw and guided, but wasn’t invested in developing it’s stories. He’d give the developers some ideas, dates and characters to do something with, say he liked or didn’t like such and such, step in and have them change this or that, answer their questions and he might have gone over a summarization of the storylines before the sign offs, but that’s about it.

They could easily have a Mara & Luke relationship that is more platonic, and that might even be an improvement. The issue is that there isn't a good way to do that without making Luke's sequel behavior even more bizarre. (Why didn't he go to his jedi best friend/rival/whatever for help or advice? etc.) They would end up needing to kill her off just to preserve the continuity, which would be rather limiting. Making the character of Mara Jade with absolutely no connection to Luke makes about as much sense as re-imaging Luke without Vader. Characters are defined as much by the contrast with their foil as by their own traits.

Simply "bringing a character into canon" has no value except for marketability. A canon Mara Jade isn't Mara Jade, just like a canon Thrawn isn't Thrawn. It's just not the same character, because their entire story is rewritten. They've lived a different life, and the one readers are invested in is not that life. So introducing Mara Jade for new canon readers who don't know her is fine, but for those that do, that's not gonna make them happy or excited. It would be a different Mara Jade. I personally would love to see a Mara like character who was either a Force Using servant of the Emperor who was left to wander after his death(s). It's part of why I dislike Dark Disciple where it just does such a radically different thing with Quinlan and Asajj (who herself is mired in weird retcons and rewrites thanks to TCW tying her in with Dathomir) that I almost wish it was just new characters rather than trying to be a Canon version of Quin's arc while removing vital characters to him like Aayla, Tholme, and Khaleen.

10/10 Could not agree more. Mara is a well balanced and complex character with plenty of story potential in the Disney Canon, and reducing her simply to: Luke's Wife does a disservice to one of Legend's most loved characters. If Thrawn can get a new lease on life in Disney, I see no reason Mara couldn't.
@RevanMartinez Жыл бұрын
She was the hand of Thrawn before she was with Luke... she was in Jabbas Palace during RoTJ.. theres so much to tell. I really wish we could see more of the dark side acolytes like Carnor Jax, Mara Jade, Lumiya, and Jerrec

And while I don't care either way about Mara being married to Luke or not in D-Canon- the presumption that Luke never married, (not like he was keeping touch with people for quite a while), is itself pretty questionable. I mean, it could be a secret marriage, something that isn't talked about much (did she die in the Academy purge?), something that happened on Ahch-To, that happened between the Academy's fall and Ahch-To, etc... And that's presuming MJ "has to" be married to LS. Hell, they could have Mara being married to Luke, and raising their child in secret, and boom, if they want to have a REAL Skywalker to counterbalance Rey, there ya go. (Not what I'd suggest, but *shrug*)

Not sure about the hole "she is only lukes wife" bit but she could totally be new cannon, Dineny make up and change stuff all the time. Plus The galleries needs more redheads as their are only 3
@michaelandreipalon359 Жыл бұрын
Still, though, even if she doesn't become a love interest, she'll still feel nerfed. The best option would be for an iteration of her that has a bunch of notable twists... like, say, she's a clone of a Mara who unfortunately failed the Emperor's training for reasons unknown (for the time being) or perhaps bring in a Mara from one fortunate-or-unfortunate Star Wars universe (somewhat similar to Legends, but with some notable discrepancies) accidentally brought in to this world by some World Between Worlds shenanigans in other works. Bonus if said take(s) on Mara is actually one who'll appear in the otherwise controversial Neo Jedi Order plan for Alt-universe storytelling.

We dont know anything about Luke's life before the razing of his Jedi Temple. He could have had a wife, she could have gotten killed then, or left him before that. Nothing in the very small details that are given in the ST make it impossible to add Mara. Hell say she left him with an ACTUAL Skywalker child and give us a true heir to Luke's legacy. People forget how little was defined in the entire 3 movies of the ST.

The point is that a majority of her story after teaming up with Luke and Co revolves around her being a part of the Skywalker clan. A lot of her emotional moments wouldn't be emotional if she wasn't Luke's wife or Ben's mother.

As an old-EU/Legends die hard fan, I can understand why there are 'absolutists' among that group which would want the character to remain as true to the original as possible. Likewise, I am a reasonable adult who understands that characters are not and should not be one-dimensional. I'd like to see Mara brought into the new canon, but I think having her involved with Luke, at all, would lessen her character at this point. Having her simply be a skilled, James Bond-esque badass who may or may not be force sensitive would be just as good to me as anything else. But her status as Luke wife should not define her, ever.
@DMBLaan Жыл бұрын
As much as I complain that all the good parts of the current Canon Univers is just ripped off of Legends characters and stories, it's more because of the modern fans who never, willingly so sometimes, looked at the old Legends U. But, that said, I don't think Mara should be put in Canon as she was in Legends. A character based on her I'd be all for. But even without the Luke connection, there's too much of her story that's been gutted by Canon to have her work as she was.

or maaaybe is has something to do with the constant whining the all new Ideas are Crap and they want the old stuff back, but since it's Star Wars with a "Fanbase" that's more toxic than american Food and Water: If they make something new it's wrong and if they bring something old back it's also wrong

Warning the fallowing comment has been made by a fan of legends material if you are a fan of the current cannon material that is good and I am not attacking you or what you like please don’t take it that way. Her story is strongly tied to Luke as he was the principal factor in her leaving the dark side and evolving as a person. In the current “cannon” the only person who could do that now is Ashoka and if they were to do that it would be yet another way they would be assassinating Luke’s character by destroying not only his mentorship toward her but as well as further destroying a key moment between the two when in the last command he was willing to turn himself over to a dark Jedi to save not just his sister and best friend but the woman who had vowed to kill him. That was the moment she realized that Luke wasn’t a monster who destroyed her master in cold blood he was a good man fighting to protect everyone including her and that led to her realizing that she was a person who could control her own destiny and not just a weapon to be commanded which is how the emperor saw her. So you can slap the name of Mara Jade on to some actor just like they’ve done with Thrawn and Grevious but it won’t be them because it’s hallow. The best example of what I’m talking about is Grevious when he first appeared in the micro series they established him as a true threat by devastating a group of Jedi in a matter of minutes then in his fallowing appearance he pops out 4 arms just to add more intimidation. The animated series came out and they dropped his I.Q. and almost every time he goes up against Obi-Wan or another main character he’s gets a limb chopped off. They should have used him sparingly, slowly building up his threat as time goes on.

Tbh theres room for her in canon to even be Luke's wife. It never specifically says Luke never married, and even though she wasnt spoken about in the last jedi, i doubt hed talk about her to Rey anyways. Mara could have died at the Jedi Temple like the rest of Luke's students when the temple was set on fire. Infact, the thought of Luke's wife burning to death would probably be a very valid reason for him to never speak of her again. It would also help add more context to why Luke exiled himself
@HenryLouis216 ай бұрын
I never liked the idea of having Mara die at the temple, because it just seems like people just want to fridge her to further the story of a male character which is not something I want to see out of Mara's story.

Luke and Mara getting married isn't the only thing to her character, but it is a key pillar of Mara's character. You take that away; you still have a character, but not Mara Jade. Corey focuses too much on the "married" aspect and on Mara's influence on Luke's character but doesn't put enough focus on how Luke influences and molds Mara's character; because Luke does very much influence Mara's character. The final stage of Mara's character is because of her and Luke's bond. They grow together as characters.

You're right, like I read Thrawn's trilogy and she wasn't 'just' Luke's wife. She hated him for over half the books and like reducing a character to who they marry is just super sexist. Thank you for saying that Mara is more than just her marriage.
