Kalimera Amelia and JP, we spent late June thru October on Corfu two years ago at Ipsos and let us tell you that 90 degrees F was a cold snap - during July and August - temps were over 100 almost everyday (35+ Celsius). We spent hours in Old Town and your description is accurate. Rented a one bedroom duplex house at Ipsos for $350 per month and we shopped at the AB's and various natural food stores and even had a deal with an organic farmer that was wonderful! We got to know several Greek people very well and they are some of the most helpful and friendly people we've ever met. One Greek friend told us that "the people on Corfu aspire to make Mexicans seem stressed". Our Greek friend, George, used to take the ferry over to Italy for lunch with a friend of his and we could see Albania from Ipsos. The toilet paper dilemma is real, however newer houses like the one we were in had 3 inch pipes which can handle the tp. We are from Hawaii and the clarity of the water blew us away...the Ionian Sea is amazing. We will return for sure.

Hey Amelia and JP! Great to see Corfu on your playlist. This takes me back over 40 years ago, as a backpacking college student (from CSU in Ft. Collins) I took the ferry from Brindisi with my buddy Brad. We landed on Corfu and immediately crossed the island to Pelekas Beach, which at the time was where all the backpackers went. For 5 Drachmas (Greek money before the Euro) you could take a shower at the local beach taverna, while the diners looked on from the adjoining patio! Of course all the Europeans were out of their clothes without a second thought! I've been to other islands like Santorini and Hydra, but for me Corfu is the most amazing. It does seem more like Italy than Greece, due to green landscapes and Venetian architecture. Hope you guys get to Crete, as I need a scouting report!

Brings back memories of our trip to Corfu many years ago. We visited old town, Paleokastricia ( very chi chi and expensive) and Agios Georgios with its stunning beach. My husband proposed there. We liked Corfu a lot. We also went to Skyros, Naxos, Paxos and spent a week touring Crete on a motorcycle. We spent a month there in all and liked Athens the least. Turns out my 5th great grandfather had been born in Corfu. His Maltese father had been captured by the brits and empressed into service back in the 1790s. Yes there was a lot of yelling when we were there too!

Greece entered into a severe recession during the financial crisis in 2009. The Euirozone wound up lending them almost 290 billion euros with strict conditions including severe austerity including cuts to public spending. They have been successful at paying the loans back and are even ahead of pace, but that might explain the lack of improvements to the infrastructure you noticed.

Agree with everything Mexted said about the bench. Also agree with replacing Reiko with ALB (or Proctor) cos we need a specialist center with the ability to identify and make space for others and range of skills needed to distrubute the pill to put them away. Where I have a point of difference is in the forwards and bench selection. This week I'd start Vai'i at 6 and Darry at 5 alongside Scooter. I'd move Blackadder to 7. As for the reserves bench, I'd select Tu'angafasi (we do miss DeGroot), Aumua (or Bell), Newell, Tosi (as a lock replacement), Sititi (power and mobility) and Cane (enforcer and our squad commander). Those 6 are our bomb squad -- I'd call them "Commander Cane's Crushers or Flying Squad". Tosi can play lock for 25-30 minutes. He reminds me of a more athletic Posolo Tuilagi (1.95m and 144kgs), who plays very effectively as a lock for the French. Mexted is in awe of Williams at 1.95m and 135kgs. Tosi is 1.96 and 140kgs. He was a decent 8 before converting to loosehead and has the ball handling and mobility to go up the guts, maraud, and create havoc against tiring oppositions. He also has the heft and strength to brace the second row against the power of the bomb squad and to shut down the inside channel on defense. If we are to truly innovate for the modern game, we need to see the bench as a game within the game. A game built on impact and putting relentless pressure on tiring oppositions with up the guts rugby and cohesive marauding as a unit for the entire final 25-30 minutes. Just like a special forces team hell bent on achieving its mission and drilled relentlessly to operate with one mind. For that reason, we cannot see our bench as like for like replacements -- as the coaches currently do, seeing them as fresh bodies to "shore things up" and hoping that one or two of them will pull off a few "winning moments" (hate that phrase, because modern benches should be focused on dominating the opposition and winning the whole last 20-25 minutes, every second of it). They should be viewed as a special unit -- selected, coached and drilled (by a dedicated coach and under the leadership an experienced leader and enforcer -- like Cane) to shut down the opposition and wrestle the initiative to finish off opponents...being completely focused and cold-minded in how they go about their work...like a perfect machine...a thing of devastating power and precision. They should be bought on as a unit...not in dribs and drabs...to stun the opposition and shift momentum. And the replacement pivot (scrummie and fly half -- we have plenty of utility players already out there able to cover the center and wings) should be dialed in to this strategy and drilled alongside the unit to support them and exploit the results of their work...like pathfinders attached to a special forces unit, calling in air strikes to deal hammer blows and identify and exploit opportunities when they are on. It's the lack of a such a cohesive game within the game strategy, and a system to produce it, that is hampering the ABs in the final 25 minutes. The Springboks have it...sort of...we don't. Razor and his team need to get smarter and make it happen. Bring on Commander Cane's Crushers or Flying Squad.

Day to day living would be frustrating. Parking and trash removal are a problem on the island and the cost of everything is definitely not cheaper than America. Its very scenic, great beaches and Old Cofu is very nice, great shopping and restaurants. We have been to 2 other Greek islands and this was our least favorite due to the overcrowding. The island has over 100k full time residents and they seem less friendly than the other islands we visited. It was a pass for everyone in our group.

Travel is great, but if you’re not a formal expat how do you handle things that require an actual address? Thanks

FYI. US citizens pay taxes on Worldwide income no matter where you live and ( Gasp ) we can vote abroad as well. PS: There are such things as traveling US mailboxes, especially if you are a business owner.

I bought an authentic Panama hat in Merida, Mexico. I was shown how it could be rolled up and placed into a suitcase for easy packing. I was sold. As I left Merida, I rolled it up as shown. Once I got to my next destination, I unrolled it to wear and it looked rumpled. It never assumed its natural shape or look again even months later. It NEVER looked good after that.

When we were in Crete my husband sliced his thumb open to the bone when he was trying to build a sun shelter on a remote beach. (Don't do this!) We drove 20 min on a motorcycle with blood flying and came to a Nato naval base where they treated him but he had to register in the Greek army first. They gave him a Greek name to do so. So he's a Petropolis now. There were these big do not enter or you will be shot signs everywhere but he was starting to pass out, so we took a chance. They fixed him up good. But it was scary.

Half the doctors have left Greece since the austerity measures implemented after 2008 caused the government to slash their salaries 50%. Presently, you have to come with a wallet filled with Euros to be seen by a physician...otherwise be prepared to WAIT

You'll find sewer smells in Bangkok and many other SE Asia locales. Sometimes it's not even the sewer. It's garbage that has been baking in the sun for a day or two. I grit my teeth and try not to breathe as I get past the emitting area.

I am so glad that you preserve the Greek West coast. But dear American friends let me use your chanel's popularity to indicate the climate change problem. This summer was and still is something else. Greece normally have a climate similar with central - Northern California. But the last three summers we became something like Arizona or New Mexico.

It still puzzles me why people specially those retired will choose to travel on holidays, during summer vacations or go places that everyone else is attending, like glorified concerts, movies or organized events, humanity had long survived without being there exactly when " it happened " I retired early and the one rule I have kept for all this years is never to drive in peak hours, dont go to advertised events, when people are going home I travel in the opposite direction, I never travel on the summer months why,? All the noise, double the prices, all those kids and the horrible crowds not to speak of the suffocating temperatures in the northern and most southern hemispheres I think you must be gluttons for punishment and that is ok if it's your thing. So my advice if the case applies to you and no one is forcing you to make your itineraries a certain way, do your traveling starting in mid September, avoid the entire months of December and return traveling in mid January till about April. You will get one day to the be as wise, the problem is how long will it take you to learn.
